When taking super-high resolution photos or recording 4K video, space is needed. So it's not so much for long-term storage, but active-use storage. iOS doees an amazing job at optimizing storage to the cloud!
Until you need to download it and it takes forever to edit a photo, text or airdrop it.

I am sure a lot of people will relish the use of 1TB of storage on the phone. I don't have a need to carry everything I own with me all the times. I also don't believe I have had a need to use LIDAR. However, I am glad Apple will probably make these things available to all, which is a good thing.

LiDAR is the single most useless future the iPhone has for an average user. Im yet to find any real benefit except from slightly better focused photos. Really, please explain how I can use LiDAR daily or even weekly for something that is actually useful?
Better photos. 😂

The Lidar is for the upcoming Astrophotography feature. Of course you will need to wait many years for it to measure the distance to even the nearest stars.
Not sure if you were being sarcastic but Astrophotography isn’t about measuring the distance to a star.

This is battling against each other... Optimizing storage vs available..

If Apple keeps increasing storage on device, wouldn't that fade out optimize storage...?
