This seems like such a cheap move by Apple, so the processor will cost the, ext to nothing extra in the ‘new’ iPhone. I bet they scrap all iPhone 13 models to promote it, won’t find any of those on sale by Apple at reduced cost. They probably will increase the ‘pro’ price and we’re struggling to come up with ways to justify the price increase and difference to the ‘standard‘ model.

When I got a 13PM this year (big upgrade from XS) I was really keen to see how the graphics were. Struggled to find anything that took advantage - I don't video edit on my phone (does anyone?) and probably the most advanced app I have on it is Lightroom. Games seem to be coded similarly for older devices, which makes sense. I'm all for advancement, but is this advancement for advancement sake? Maybe they're building up to AR capabilities to somehow go alongside the headset? I WANT TO USE THE POWER - DON'T KNOW HOW!!

Just two days ahead of Apple unveiling the iPhone 14 lineup, The Wall Street Journal's Tim Higgins reports that the lower-end iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models will be equipped with an "enhanced version" of the A15 Bionic chip.

The report does not provide any additional details about the chip, but there has been speculation that the standard iPhone 14 models will be equipped with the iPhone 13 Pro's higher-end A15 chip with a five-core GPU for up to 25% faster graphics performance. In the standard iPhone 13 models, the A15 chip has a four-core GPU.

Improved graphics performance would likely be the only change to the A15 chip in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, as the chip has the same 6-core CPU and 16-core Neural Engine in both the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro.

In line with information shared by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo back in March, the report claims that only the iPhone 14 Pro models will be upgraded with Apple's latest A16 chip for faster CPU performance. This would mark the first time that Apple limits its latest chip to the Pro models as part of an annual refresh of its flagship iPhone lineup, resulting in even more differentiation between the standard and Pro models.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max during a special event at Steve Jobs Theater on Wednesday. Many new features are expected for the Pro models, including an always-on display with a new pill-shaped notch replacement, an upgraded 48-megapixel Wide lens, faster RAM, and more.

People have forgotten the classic iPhone 5C.

Currently using the 11 Pro and I am just not seeing the upgrade for me.

Undoubtedly if you sat them side by side, the 14 would be quicker and have a nicer screen but really, once the new phone hype has worn off in a month or so, everything will just be the same. Apps will load the same, the photos will look the same on the iphone screen which is where most people view them anyway and realistically, I am still going to need to charge it every night as the bigger battery is still not going to last me 2 full days.

So it seems like the best bargain will be to buy old stock of last year’s 13 Pro. Not sure how they’ll sell it to the public that it’s the same phone but has “more cores”, when the 13 pro will be the same hardware, but with an extra camera, for about the same price…

They don’t even sell you 13 pro once 14 pro is out lol xd

We knew this ages ago. I know we don't need the new chips every year but not having them and charging more for a new phone doesn't sit right with me.

And will this now set a precedent for apple and other companies to do the same even when there is no more chip shortages? Will we be getting the same chip with a little bit more graphics power every other year?

If so please go back to calling them S models to show that I think.

Chip shortage is real or an excuse? Look at all desktop computer components prices like ssd, cpu, whatever, all at historical lowest range prices.

Well, the "s" models actually featured significantly faster SoCs. That’s difficult to achieve for anyone these days.

Why do we act like this is the first time this happened? 13 Pro had a different chip than 13. 25% faster GPU is significant to call it a different chip.

Yes but the chip was not from the previous year. The chip was still updated on all models.

Having said that I believe the average consumer (and I would argue 95% of all of us on here) do not need a new chip every year.

I thought we pretty much knew this already. It's just going to be the "enhanced" A15 from the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max.
So if they get the same A15 chip from my 13 pro max and call it “enhanced” that’s the new name im calling mine then lol

It might be needed for new camera resolution, my guess is both 14 and 14 Pro will get new wide angle lens.

This is a business decision based on many factors.
  1. 3nm is not yet ready yet. This deepens the differentiation between models significantly.
    • The thermal vapor chamber (Probably needed for A16 but not for eA15) & new camera system are significantly more expensive than before. Imagine if they used them on the standard model as well. WOuld you like to have a higher specced non-Pro iPhone but 200 dollars more expensive?
    • Most if not all non-Pro users use a fraction of the power of the A15 anyway - why complicate other areas with the same 5nm process (Thermals, battery life) if the same processor can be enhanced?
    • The A15 is a monster chip for performance compared to the competition so there is enough room to use the base for that to use that gen for the next.
  2. And of course, Apple is a for profit business - increasing the price of their margin is the expectation of shareholders of a publicly traded company. Cramming more features to the pro and making it more expensive and make the non-pro more affordable is a win win for different users from different socioeconomic segments.

The big step in speed will be DDR5 in the 14Pro, and wifi 6E where you can take advantage. But I also have the 11Pro, and this phone is still quick. Battery is showing its age, tho. Snapdragon has abandoned speed for battery conservation in their newest chip.
