What I'm seeing, compared to what I own currently (iPhone 12) is likely going to prompt me to get an iPhone 14 Pro. The *only* reason I hesitate is the supposed switch to USB C next year...but considering the rest of the family has devices that use the Lightning port, and the fact that I'm not any sort of amateur photographer, I don't see any real benefit to needing to wait for the USB-C ready iPhone.

With that said, if I'm mistaken on this, let me know; I'd also have no issue getting an iPhone 14 and waiting a year if there ARE benefits beyond what I've listed.
Based on your use case, sounds like going with the 14 Pro would be fine. I think most people who are excited about USB-C coming to iPhone are more from a cable management standpoint (and the faster data transfer speeds).

Indeed. That’s just it. Huge upgrade because you’re getting essentially a Pro Max level device for non-Pro pricing. This is huge for the non-Pro line. Biggest non-Pro upgrade in years.

Yes, but people looking to complain will always find something to complain about.
Same specs at a lower price you call an "upgrade"? I call it just lower prices. Apple never has sales. They just do this.

Well, yeah. I mean, as an IT guy, the cable management part of me will *ALWAYS* want to 'simplify my life' but I already own several Lightning cables; USB-C devices are definitely in the minority in our household, so if anything, right now it'd make it a bit more of a PITA. Better to wait for that until the rest of the fam is ready to move to USB-C.

Aside from that, the only tangible advantage I was given was by a friend of mine who also uses his phone for photography in an area known for not the best cell coverage *and* usually buys his iPhone with as much storage as he can for the same reason.

From that POV, I can see him wanting to upgrade to USB-C soon as it's available. For me, though? I've usually been happy with 128Gb of storage; and with the small amount of photos I take, I think I'd be just fine with this year's Pro.

Apple should get into the camera business instead of superimposing the camera business onto their phones.

S release for NON Pros, the Pros...a NON S release?!?!

Upgrading from regular 13 to 14 doesn't make much sense to me (But older phones 11, X to 14, yes...go for it, upgrade)

But 13 Pros to 14 Pros will have some tempting larger benefits. Especially photography lovers like me ...if you want that - what appears - a big camera upgrade, better Super Wide night shots, LiDAR, better DoF, etc.

I don't know..the line up, roll out this year is a bit mind boggling.

Yes but the chip was not from the previous year. The chip was still updated on all models.

Having said that I believe the average consumer (and I would argue 95% of all of us on here) do not need a new chip every year.
They will update the 14 chip with the 13 Pro chip, and even if it's from the last year, it's still a faster chip for the regular iPhone. The year is irrelevant. You are getting an upgrade.

Do you guys think there is a chance Apple might give the regular 14's a 90 hz screen (or some kind of higher refresh). At this point only Apple can get away with charging £700-800 for their phones with 60 hz. I just brought my dad a One Plus NORD CE 2 Lite for £179, and it has a 120 hz screen which is just unbelievable TBH.

Upgrading from the previous year’s model almost never makes sense.

Ironically though, the most compelling upgrade in this context may be from the iPhone 13 non-Pro to the iPhone 14 Plus. It’s a whole new much larger form factor for (hopefully) not much more.

More importantly though is that the iPhone 14 Plus going to be a great upgrade from the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR, for those wanting to go bigger and get better cameras, without the Pro tax.

You do realize for those 12 owners who skipped the iPhone 13 because of the same incremental upgrades you’re complaining about now, this will be a great reason
and time to buy. Rarely is anything incremental on a two-year buying cycle.

I don't see why phones have to be released every 12 months at this point. They're pretty mature now and the differences year to year are often small. A longer life cycle would be doable, similar to Macs and the iPad Pro.
If auto manufacturers can find a reason to release new models every year, you better believe phones are going to be too.

I’m pretty sure Jobs foresaw this and tried to push the naming convention as just “iPhone” and you’d differentiate by model year, just like cars. Apologies, don’t have time to provide a source.

With an exchanced chip, This is the iPhone 13S version. I wonder if Apple will allow the launch of these iPhones with the Pro line up or it will it be separate?

It also sounds like this is going from S6 > S7 Apple Watch. Just under the hood refinement a little.

Why wouldn’t Apple hold this event at the same time? These are the models that will appeal to the most amount of their customers due to the fact they are slightly more affordable and appealing to the mainstream market. Not everybody out there is bothered about processor benchmarks and the 14 Pro/14 Pro Max you know.

Brand new 13 Pros will probably still be more expensive than regular 14, although it might be a good value for the rest of the Pro features. But with the way Apple controlled its inventories, finding specific model with the color and storage option you want might be challenging.

With the impending keynote of the 14, even in my country, I'm seeing the authorized resellers thinning out their inventory. And it's not like we will be getting the new phones ASAP, we will probably only get them in December or so. But I can already see Apple tightening the inventories so demand will be at the highest peak upon release date.

Apple as a company may be tightening inventories but they are not the only outlet for getting an iPhone. If people are buying them through carriers or upgrade retailers (most common forms in my country) then there will still be stock available for many months. You can still get a 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max on contract despite it being discontinued a year ago by Apple. I can’t imagine the 13 Pro’s will suddenly be hard to get hold of all of a sudden.

A16 and A16 Pro.

Spoiler: they're both modified versions of the A15 (no matter how you spin it), and a very long in the tooth 5nm process, so it hardly matters.
