At some point (like now) they’re going to have to stop doing this. The lenses are getting ridiculously huge.
Who wants to carry that thing around?

I wish there was a Pro phone for non-photographers who don't obsess over megapixels so we could use it without the god-awful, annoying camera bump without a case.
Not sure how to break this to you, but despite having a bump and all these cameras the iPhone 13's megapixel count hasn't changed from last, bump-less iPhone. While you probably can get a raw 48MP photo, in default mode the upcoming quad-bayer camera is going to downsample photos to the same 12MP, but with better detail and less noise.

Congrats to all the people that continued to complain about the camera all these years. You just couldn't leave well enough alone and have an acceptable camera on your phone then if you wanted to have AMAZING photos go out and buy a dedicated camera. You wanted a camera instead of a phone and this what we're getting. I blame all you phone photographers for this who probably still don't realize it's the conditions & photographer that make a photo great not the camera. I know people that can take better photos on an SE than I can on my 13 PM...
Ironically, having a great dedicated camera is the reason why I want my point and shoot phone camera to be as good as possible. And while I could spend iPhone money on a 1" sensor compact, I'd rather my phone photos be as good as possible. Under the same conditions, the same photographer will get a better version of the same photo with the iP13 than they would the SE.

The catch 22 of having an improved rear camera at the expensive of "the bump" is evolving. Now case makers are adding a bump, or ridgeline, to their cases. The wobble is evolving.
Wont someone at Apple think of us that use the iPhone in all of its natural, naked glory?!
In all seriousness, I hate the bump, but if I have to choose between the camera, or the bump... well, Apple knows the answer to this, and has been thriving off of it for years now.

My only problem with the bump is that its design is really uninspired. Maybe stretch it across the width of the phone so naked phones on tables don't wobble, and design something more interesting than an extruded square with rounded corners.

On an aside, when Apple adds a periscope zoom that may mean the camera body... I mean iPhone body ? may be thicker to accommodate the zoom mechanism which means the bump wouldn't need to protrude as far. Better battery life too.

maybe we’re going to see a split of camera from phone in a few years (like it used to be).

People will decide “this phone is stupid. The camera is huge and bulky. I just want to easily carry my cellphone without the camera getting caught on my pants and purse all the time”

They’re growing the camera right out the housing of the phone.
Uh no…no one wants to carry both, we’re way past the point of that ever happening. The point and shoot camera as a separate thing is done.

I hate ... Hate ... HATE that ugly, wobble-inducing camera bump. Honestly, the camera quality on the SE is plenty good enough for me. Our whole family is still sporting iPhone 6s phones and it'll stay that way until Apple update the SE with an edge to edge screen like the regular iPhones. That's the perfect iPhone mini I've been waiting for! Clearly there are diverse opinions out there...

Just a reminder.
Where is the style, the elegance? that's disgusting by now I must say.
We (or at least, I) complain when Apple often chooses form over function. E.g. choosing too small (“elegant”) over bigger battery or sacrificing ports.

In this case, it’s a better camera.

Obviously it’s a fine line. But in your example, I think that camera is quite a bit less functional, and I’m personally happy with the tradeoff of less elegant for a better camera.

Can they please stop calling the main camera “wide”. I understand it may be wide but if you have 2 or 3 lenses, one should be called normal, like we all know it is.

I have a great Leica camera I took on a 9 week trip in Africa in late 2019. I also had the largest model iPhone XS of the day. One was wise to leave the Leica in the truck when going into the crowds. So the iPhone could be in a secure pocket of my pants when not in use, but was immediately to hand when a photo opportunity would happen.

I do not lug the Leica around everyday, but the current iPhone 13 Pro Max is always with me. That was the point Steve Jobs made a long time ago. I am all for the better camera system every year. I upgrade my iPhone every year to the fully loaded top model. Last year's top model goes to my wife. hers goes to one of her four adult daughters. We reuse or recycle the iPhones through the family.

Wow that 14 Pro cutout looks so overwhelming in proportion to the overall size. I don’t like oversized phones but I’m not sure how that is going to feel ergonomically. The 12 Pro felt off balance to me so I actually had less strain holding a 12 Pro max. My 13 Pro was okay but having so much of the back dedicated to the camera meant my fingers ended up in too many pictures.

I will have to see what my husband’s 14 Pro Max will be like. I’m just not digging that 14 Pro look overall. I thought the 13 Pro camera bump was really pushing it for that size chassis.

with a 1/1.3 sensor I guess it's needed. this is going to be quite a massive jump in main sensor size.
