Apple’s marketing tactic to upsell the pros works wonder

I thought more about it, it seems they are pushing non enthusiast users into pro's more than ever with the lineup and price differences.

While they can tout 'no price increases' (in US, lol to international markets) and I am happy its not $100 more as was rumored all year, and was going to go for the Pro anyways, this is kinda like the inflation/price increase built in- just much more covert. Plus regular iPhone 14 start at $799 instead of $699 base last year with the 13 mini (although the 13 mini still being sold and at $599 makes a nice compelling option for many, and 13 regular was $799 last year).

Still I think 120hz (if not coming from a 13 pro, and comparing to iPhone 14 regulars), dynamic island, brighter display, A16 4nm, 48MP/camera improvements, AOD - all a pretty nice package!

Yeah, that's what I don't get. It's expensive enough to be high end, but only for another $100 you can get it all. It would have to be way more than $100 less to sell well.
That's just it, the 14 Pro doesn't let you "get it all". As I've said in other threads, we'd rather have 14 Plus than a 14 Pro. The comparison for us is 14 Plus vs 14 Pro Max, for obvious reasons.

What did they think would happen? For a few 100 more you get a fast processor, better camera, and more. They should have priced the 14 and 14 Plus much lower.

Meeting demand is how it should be, there should always be a bit more products available when a product launches. They will end up selling by xmas anyway. You ramp down production when your sales start to dip. But if the demand is low for real, then due to peoples paychecks not keeping up with inflation and apples ever increasing prices, they must know they will price themselves out of their own audience eventually if they keep doing that. People want new phones not the crumbs they throw off the table (old reduced functionality phones). I think Apple will change the way they finance phones to make it easier to buy them before they actually reduce the prices on their phones to keep them in line with the economy.

The pro max model was only what, 200 more? Plus the big factor in my opinion was that the plus was the only model with a delayed release date. We live in an instant gratification society. Faced with a longer ship date people decided to spend the extra 200, which spread out over payments isn’t actually that much money.

Wait for the new 6.1 and 6.7 Iphone SE in next spring 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Do you think people all have iPhone 13s and upgrade yearly?

There is no older model equivalent here still on sale for people to compare to.

I was just pointing out that the phone is positioned in a weird spot. If you upgrade every few years, it is much better to splurge for a pro model. The regular iPhone 14's are in a weird spot.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA ::clears throat:: HAHAHAHHAHA

Garbage "update" gets garbage sales figures... go figure.

Hope this a wakeup call to Apple, because this is a slap in the face of all their stock owners and people who buy their products around the world. Absolute joke.

Bring on the 15 come Spring/early Summer.
You do realise the people who didn't buy the 14 Plus likely ended up opting for the more expensive pro models, right?

The type of casual user who would buy this model isn't the type to preorder a phone now that doesn't release until October. Over the long run the 14 Plus will become the best selling iPhone bar none. Just watch.
I really think you're on to something here.

It seems that they're either struggling to break up the lower-end lineup, or that this was intentional as a means of upselling as others have suggested.

I think the ideal iPhone lineup (in my view) next year will be something along the lines of:

  • iPhone SE 4 (6.1-inch, iPhone 11 form factor, LCD & notch)
  • iPhone 15 (6.1-inch OLED, with same form factor as the 14 but with the Dynamic Island)
  • iPhone 15 Pro (6.1-inch OLED, premium design, better/more cameras than the 15, better performance)
  • iPhone 15 Ultra (6.7-inch, same premium design as the pro but bigger, with potentially even larger and better cameras than the 15 Pro. Would line up with Ming Chi Kuo's claims that Apple want to separate the top end models more)

I think that the above is simple, easy to understand, and finally no more 'Pro Max' moniker. I don't mind 'Max' on it's own, but I think it would imply to the average consumer that the phone is a downgrde if they go to just calling it 'Max' after three years, especially when it's always had 'Pro' in front of it on the iPhone. Time for something new and Ultra seems to be their buzzword now.

As for a mini phone, unfortunately I don't think Apple will bring it back after they've just discontinued it on the new lineup. Not for a few years, at least. Maybe the market will change by that point.

I'd love to see them resurrect the iPhone 13 mini as a 4th-Generation iPhone SE, but I don't think they'll be able to get the cost low enough to target that market. Not at the moment, anyway.

Words cannot even express how happy this makes me. They had the perfect phone for light phone users. A device that had the latest hardware, in a small design, that could fit easily in the pocket, and was $100 less than the regular model. Any light phone user or person who likes small phones was in love.

Then they canceled it for the opposite, and now the sales are bad. Oh man this feels like karmic justice.

Why always this? Smaller does not mean cheaper.

Personally, I want a smaller iPhone with bells and whistles.

I don't care about the bloody price.

Apparently this is very difficult for people to grasp.

Yes!
Finally someone gets it.
👍
Yes yes yes! Thank you. I've been saying this since the 12 mini was announced. I bought a 12 mini and loved it, upgraded to a 13 mini last year, too. They were both great phones, but what I really wanted and would've gladly paid Pro Max prices for is a "Pro mini" with the telephoto lens and ProMotion display -- even if that meant foregoing the ultrawide lens to make room for the telephoto lens.

Everyone I know except for two people who were looking at the 13 mini last year ended up going with the Pro because they didn't want to forego the better features of the Pro. The mini's sales suffered because Apple made people choose between the better size and better hardware. They "upsold" people into a device with better hardware, but a worse form factor. If they put those "Pro" features into a 5.4" (or even 5.6" device), it'd be perfect.

I just think people have become out of touch with reality that they think a 6.1" phone is the "normal" size and the number of people who are saying the 6.7" Plus/Pro Max isn't big enough are loony. I don't even know how you reasonably carry what's supposed to be a mobile phone that large. I have a 13 mini and 13 Pro right now. I've been using the 13 Pro for the past few months, and I can authoritatively say that the 13 Pro is way too big to hold comfortably for more than a few minutes, can't be used one handed, and the corner sticks out of most of my jeans pockets. The best part about a smaller device is that it's small and lightweight most of the time, and if you really need extra battery power you can slap on the MagSafe battery pack or plug in a portable battery when you need it. Then when you don't, all that extra weight and size can be left behind.

And for those who really want a device that big to carry around all the time, get a cellular iPad mini for $649.

you don't get it

the entire point of this phone is to not sell but to make people spend that extra hundred on the pros

Let's all salute the iPhone 14 Plus: sacrificing itself for the greater good (more iPhone Pro sales).

I pre-ordered the 14 Plus as a replacement for my XR. I wanted a larger phone, but did not want to spend an extra $200 for Pro Max’s better camera and extra weight.

Obviously not the demographic here, but my 70+ year old sister wants the 14 Plus as she is updating from iPhone 7. She wanted a bigger screen, but is not concerned with "pro" features. The 14 Pro Max is $200 (not $100!) more and would be a waste on her.

How about 13 pro max, almost exactly same price as 14 plus in a lot of places? Why get the non pro expensive phone when you can get the pro?

Not really much to read into based on non-Pro pre-order numbers. BUT I do hope Apple alternates Mini and Plus versions every other year to hit both demographics.

It will be interesting to see the data on sales of this plus versus the 12 and 13 mini (separately of course).

It will be interesting to find out size had nothing to do with it lol. Maybe folks only care about alternate size pro models.

I'm a little surprised to be honest. I thought the 14 Plus would have been the hottest seller. $200 less than the Pro variant for folks who only care about big screen phones.
