I'm having no performance or other issues with my 64GB iPhone 11. I'm running the latest iOS 16 beta and am happy with it. Let's see if the 15 next year makes me think about upgrading.
I upgrade roughly every four years. I'm on a 12 Pro Max right now, so that means 2024.

The iPhone 12 series has the Apple A14 SoC, which is actually faster than my 2017 27" iMac Core i5-7600. In that context it seems ridiculous that people are complaining that the iPhone 14 non-Pro series have "only" A15.

BTW, the reported average in North America for phone upgrades is 3-4 years, which means some don't upgrade for 5-6 years.

Yes, I recognize this is precisely Apple's "upsell / downsell" strategy with this phone, but the point here isn't to praise Apple's cleverness in protecting their margins. As a consumer, I am irked at being offered a $900 phone in 2022 with a 60Hz display.
That’s cute. I see you made sure to highlight the last part vs the example, so I’ll repeat.

Your $200 devices basically use their budget for a PM display, while Apple offers quality parts, materials and components on their devices. The fact they choose not to put PM on all four models, is fine. That’s why there are different models!

It’s quite easy when you have 20 manufacturers busting out Android devices, to have some low budget phones only focusing on the display. But when you have one company, with four models of iPhone (+ tons of other products) making quality devices all around, I don’t blame them for throwing it on just the Pro models.

And this can’t be repeated enough, if you don’t like it, don’t support them. Go and buy anything else that offers your PM for cheaper.

👊🤑👍

Ok, here’s another angle: Google just introduced two new (premium) phones. One is $600, and has a 90Hz screen; the other is $900, and has a 120Hz screen (“with adaptivity down to 10Hz”). Why can Google do it at those price points, but Apple can’t? (And the reason I don't buy "anything else" is because I prefer & use iPhones, but I don't share your apparent "love it or leave it" mentality that Apple must not be questioned.)

You lost me at “Google”

You can question/complain/whine all you want. That’s your God given right. But it won’t do you any good. They’ll transition all their models to PM when they’re ready.

And whether there was a panel shortage or not over the last year, they’re definitely not gonna put PM on all models until they know they have enough panels to keep up with the demand they have every year on launch.

Not sure about you, but I don’t want to wait 4-6 months for a new iPhone. I’ll gladly dish out money for more features, including the overrated PM I hardly notice.

👊😁👍

If you have a 13 pro it's not worth the upgrade.
People generally aren't upgrading 1-year old smartphones. I imagine the target market for this would be anyone still on the iPhone 11 or older, or even an existing 12 user, who has decided they don't need all the extra features of the 14 pro series (which has shown to drain battery faster as well), but might be drawn to a larger display.

Geez. Am I on my phone that much more than the average person? I’ve known for a while now that I’m on my phone way too much… (I don’t even have social media anymore.)… but I’m at 7 hours average. A lot because of work, but still! This person is only on for two hours a day. Crazy.

False! In Apple terms "ProMotion" means 120hz refresh rate on the OLED panel, which consumes significantly more energy when compared to 60hz.
In fact, when you turn on "Power Saving Mode" on your iPhone 13/14 Pro models, it will turn off ProMotion (120hz) and locks the screen at 60hz to safe energy.

What may potentially safe power is the use of LTPO tech inside the 13/14 Pro models. This can change the refresh rate of the OLED panel depending on what is displayed on your screens and the frame-rate of the content in motion.
I think that was exactly @boak ’s point about the flexible refresh rate in the pro phones.

Awake three hours early cleaning up child throw up, I’m just reading this article wondering “WHY does this iPhone exist? Why did Apple waste their R&D budget and resources on this?”

$900.

NINE.

You might as well get the Pro: you’ll be happier.
As long as you don’t mind paying 22% more and actually care about those features.

The only case is worthy coming from 13pro is if you want bigger screen without increasing weight.

Of course if you have 13PM makes no sense, but anyway you’re going to envy the weight of 14 plus the first time you hold it in your hands…

Love my deep purple iPhone 14 Pro Max. First time I have purchased the larger iPhone. 6.7 is not too big to handle or place in my chinos / jeans pockets. I have the 6.7 in Google and Nokia. The appearance of the Samsung detered me from embracing the larger smart phone screens and compared to the Nokia 3310 are a massive, weighty but also a powerful phone hardware and software wise.

I might be in a minority here, but I honestly don't notice the 120Hz display on my 14 Pro Max. I forgot it was a feature until I was going through the specs with a friend 😂

I have a 144 hz gaming monitor and have always insisted on having a Pro iPad for the refresh rate but when playing with the 13 Pro in the store, I had to make sure 120hz was on because I legitimately couldn’t notice. Granted, the Pro Max model was a little more noticeable but there‘s something about a smaller screen that makes it harder to notice.

While I can appreciate the number crunching in an effort to micro-budget, and the discretion in wise consumer product selection; I don’t think mulling over spending an extra $200 for a much better cellphone experience is a worthy exercise if you’re already spending $900 plus tax.

I.e. If saving money is a concern, and features don’t really concern you, then get a used 8+, or a Google Pixel: no one needs to spend $900 on a cellphone unless they want the cutting edge tech, which the 14 does not deliver.

My mom got a 13 pro max and she put it in a otter box case and she says that because it’s bigger and heavier she drops it way less than other lighter and smaller cellphones.

Go fig 🤷‍♂️

Just had a play with a 14 Plus in the local Apple Store and it's really nice... noticeably lighter than the Pro Max. If I was to upgrade my XR right now, I think it would be to a 14 Plus.
I was going to upgrade my wife's XR to the 14 Plus, but she got sold on the new camera setup in the Pro line, so I'll get her the 14 Pro Max. Gotta keep the wifey happy... ;)

Somehow I think the camera may be wasted on her though. She constantly cuts off people's heads and limbs and stuff in pictures.

Haha fair enough. From a XR I think the standard 14's camera would be enough of an upgrade, a Pro would just be overkill for me.
Still going to try and eke the XR out until the 15 lands lol

That was exactly my thought for her actually, especially since the XR only has one lens.

The performance of the XR is just fine. It's actually faster than my current primary work desktop, which is a 2014 Mac mini Core i5-4278U. It's also faster than my primary MacBook, a 2017 Core m3.

The main difference is that the XR only has 3 GB RAM. 3 GB RAM in an iPhone is not bad in 2022, but it's not optimal. In contrast, 2 GB iDevices are really starting to show their age.

I don’t think so. I’m just under 7 hours. Younger people go double that or more.

Ever since getting an Apple Watch, my daily iPhone usage has decreased significantly. I'm averaging around 2 hours a day and sometimes less. Mind you, I never got close to 7 hours even before getting the Watch.

Yes that's the best point. Those 20 Android mamnufacturers might get their panels from different places, and the devices come out staggered at nowhere close per manufacturer vs Apple volume.
