II noticed today that if you buy an unconnected 14 Plus on the Apple Store, Apple adds a $30 surcharge. They do not add the surcharge if you buy an unconnected 14 Pro Max. Has this always been the case for unconnected non-Pro phones on the Apple Store? I never noticed it before.
Apple had that surcharge for awhile.
It's considered a 'carrier discount' if you buy it from a carrier without the surcharge.
Appear that there's no surcharge for the unlocked Pro models while the unlocked Non-Pro models have that surcharge.

Marques isn't always positive on Apple, he didn't exactly give the Studio Display a glowing review at all.

Out of a lot of the channels, he's probably one of the more balanced ones.
I don’t understand how anybody can call MKBHD an Apple Bootlicker lol
Pretty sure he daily drives Android phones

And that why Apple stated that low power mode disables pro-motion on Pro models? Why would they disable pro motion if it’s actually more efficient for the battery.
Apple isn’t always consistent in how they use the term. From the original announcement:

ProMotion also improves display quality and reduces power consumption by automatically adjusting the display refresh rate to match the movement of the content.” [https://www.apple.com/sg/newsroom/2...st-advanced-display-breakthrough-performance/]

Obviously low-power mode only deactivates the high refresh rates, but the display of course remains a ProMotion display and probably still uses adaptive refresh rates, just capped at 60 Hz.

I might be in a minority here, but I honestly don't notice the 120Hz display on my 14 Pro Max. I forgot it was a feature until I was going through the specs with a friend 😂
Agree with you. I don’t notice a difference between my iPad Pro with ProMotion and my iPhone 13 mini or my wife’s iPad Air.

It would be a good deal if it was priced at $700 or so. As it stands, it doesn’t make sense to not spend the extra $100 extra for the pro.

IMO, the 14 Pro is a downgrade from the 14 Plus, specifically because of the screen. The real upgrade is the 14 Pro Max, but that is US$200 more.

A lot of people have small hands and really don't like the old design of SE. So the Mini is really a great device for their particular use case.
Guy look at the sales numbers. Nobody cares. Women often have small hands and even most of them like large phones.
It’s a theoretical problem, everybody is used to use two hands and even quick checking is possible with one small hand.

You'll notice it next time you're using a phone without it.
Not necessarily. I have it on my 14PM and turned it off after a week to save battery. Simply irrelevant to me. All of the sudden, an iPhone isn’t smooth?

MKBHD is one of the most unbiased reviewer I know on youtube.

OK, then I got that one wrong, apologies, 99 percent of these Youtube reviewers are shills, it is easy to forget there a few that have some integrity.

Not a phone, but I don’t notice the loss when going from kg iPad Pro to my wife’s iPad Air.
I can notice the difference with 120 Hz if I look for it, but I don't care. It's just not something that I find an actual benefit.

Anecdotal, but the first group of people at my workplace that I noticed buying the Samsung Note back in 2011 (when Apple had the iPhone 4S) were (small) women. They all used it two-handed, and didn't mind carrying that larger size phone since it fit easily in their purses.

I don’t really notice it on my iPad Pro either. But I can’t stand using a 60Hz phone anymore…I constantly think it’s stuttering.

I don't either. I think ProMotion is one of those things that some people can perceive and some can't. It's probably similar to lossless music in that regard.

Maybe you don’t care about it, but I do not believe that you don’t notice the difference.

Yes, and you’re talking about devices that are put together like Snap Tite Model Kits and the 90hz/120hz display is the best thing about the device.

Hold on, let me backtrack a lil. Some add a massive battery that really highlights the cheap build. Unfortunately, it still runs Android.

👊😁👍
That’s the point. If cheap, crappy phones can have it, why not pricey, good phones?

That’s easy. Because the “good phones” you speak of, pack the rest of their phone with many more quality components and materials in it than a “cheap phone” with one good component (the screen).

If I buy an expensive car and the only thing they didn’t spend money on when manufacturing it was the windshield; I’d way rather have a cheap windshield vs cheap wheels, paint job, engine, exhaust, interior, etc…

So what if they add the 120hz to their Pro models? Spend the money for more features and quality all around, or go buy the cheaper, $200 devices.

Only time I notice the smooth and fluid movement of PM is drawing on my iPad Pro. Never even noticed coming from my regular 12 to the 13P and now the 14PM.

I’m the tech guy for my stepmother and every time she asks me to do/fix anything on her 11, I don’t go ‘this is slow and so jittery’. I just don’t notice.

Me too.
Before switching to Аpole ecosystem 2.5 years ago, I was looking only at 90/120hz Android phones for my next one. But after the disappointing new releases back then, I decided to try iPhone 11 (and then the 2020 SE, XS and ended with 12 pro). Then when I was looking for an iPad I went for the Pro mostly because of more RAM and ProMotion.
I can’t tell the difference. Honestly, I even think it is worse when scrolling than normal 60hz display.

Of course with competitive gaming on my PC, 120hz were well welcomed.

Actually I have high expectations for this phone. I'm still using an XsMax and very happy with the screen size and don't want go regular 14 size.

Indeed Apple should have called this phone as 13S, or rename it completely, because right now, for non pro models, the options are 13 mini - 14 - 14 plus. (I don't know why they are still selling regular 13).

I wish Apple used the telescope lens instead of Ultrawide on their base models. I rarely use ultrawide and don't understand why telescope is a premium feature.

I'm considering this model for my mother and maybe for my brother (late 40s). However I think a used 13 pro max would be probably better.
A 13 Pro Max will certainly be cheaper, but other than that it won’t be better…

Yes, I recognize this is precisely Apple's "upsell" strategy with this phone, but the point here isn't to praise Apple's cleverness in protecting their margins (and why would I buy a cheap Android phone?). As an Apple consumer, I am irked at being offered a $900 phone in 2022 with a 60Hz display.

EDIT: here’s another angle: Google just introduced two new phones. One is $600, and has a 90Hz screen; the other is $900, and has a 120Hz screen (“with adaptivity down to 10Hz”). Why can Google do it at those price points, but Apple can’t?
