iPhone 14 Pro 128, deep purple, 16.0.3

I’m not happy with my battery either.
Three days ago turned off any widgets, and mentioned battery life increased some.
Today turned off AOD, also much better.
But there is something to add. Usually I have 1 bar of signal strength with Verizon, my elevation 870m above the sea level, signal sucks.

Yup, poor cellular signals are a big drain - I used to have 1 bar (AT&T) at home too. Fortunately, there’s an easy answer - WiFi Calling. I now have 3-bar service, but still put cellular into airplane mode when I get home. Why use 2 antennas when 1 one is enough?

Clearly the 14 pro isn’t a battery champ but I hope it’ll at least be an improvement over my regular 12.

I have been following this thread for weeks as I have an IPhone 14 Pro Max. The first thing I noticed is the battery life doesn't compare to battery life in IPhone 13 Pro Max. I tried many things with no successful results. The AOD is set to on. This function actually learns your behavior and the AOD isn't always on. I work from home and my phone sits on my desk and I don't use it for work. I also have the Apple Watch Ultra. I have a lot of push notifications setup. Yesterday the AOD was off the entire day and I didn't use the phone. At the end of the day the battery percentage wa at 96%, most days it would be 90% or lower. This is all from basically not using the phone, maybe a call here and there. The AOD is exactly what is causing the battery drain as I learned yesterday. Apple doesn't seem to acknowledge there is an issue. Everyone needs to report this issue to Apple otherwise nothing will be done. Clearly, AOD is the culprit of battery drain.

I have made so many tests with the battery of iPhone 14 Pro.
And I would like to say that I have noticed a big difference about usage and battery impact.

I usually use my phone with lots of very small usages. For example, I can open Twitter 2min, open Safari 1min, return on Twitter, answering a SMS, playing 5min to Mariokart, etc.... Doing this during 4 hours on the day gets me to 40% !

This kind of usage seems to be a battery killer. On the other hand, watching a 1h video on youtube does not use lot of battery (only 6 / 7 %).

This morning, I have made a test on my old iPhone 13.
5h of Youtube video and I have 65% remaining !

65% is the battery level I can reach after only 2h30 of my usage (lots of small use).

So comparing only our battery chart is a very hard exercise ! It only have sense for the same usage.

I have noticed that watching videos and tik toks really does not eat as much battery as some reddit.

Spotify which I have used for 27 minutes today has sapped 2% of my battery. Mail which I have used 3 minutes has taken a whopping 5 % of my battery. Even snapseed which I have used for 2 minutes took 3% as per Battery overview.

Lets say this has me confused. Though I can report my battery is getting better each day.

Just another perspective from a battery/efficiency hobbyist.

AOD is just another feature, and an obvious power-consumer. If the benefits of AOD are not worth the battery drain to you, then simply turn it off. The 14 series is spec’ing well into 20-something hrs ‘up to’ screen-on-time spec, so you’d think there’s enough cushion built in there to cover it.

Are Apple’s ‘up to’ SOT specs realistic? On mostly wifi, I personally get Apple spec, even after 3years of ‘heavy’ use (~7hrs SOT/day, as my ‘home computer’). However, most folks here consider efficiency tuning settings, and battery management, to be ‘crippling’ the phone. I personally consider it turning off stuff I don’t use/care about, and an automated custom optimization actually saves me time, money, effort vs an Apple battery swap (and I live 5mls from their store).

I appreciate the way Apple allows users to fine tune settings between features and efficiency/battery, and especially the ‘programmability’ through the Shortcut/Automation App. What you do with it is entirely up to to you. That said, I do find Apple somewhat deceptive in the way they are using most folks phones/batts as crowdsource beacons to support their AirTag system.

I think that Apple made a big deal about the AOD feature and it not having a major impact on the battery usage. If you are going to offer these features, then be honest and tell people the kind of impact it will have on your battery usage/life. Apple tends to exaggerate their features and typically are always behind other phone manufacturers. I think the AOD is a great feature and I just let the phone determine when it is used. Mostly off during the day and on at night as I use the phone more at night.

Here an iPhone 13 playing YouTube and nothing else. That is the proof that launching plenty of apps every 5min kills the battery.

IOS 16.1 seems to have helped with the battery drain. My 14 Pro Max sat in standby mode from 7:30AM to 4:30PM, one call that I didn't answer and it drained from 100% to 99% in 9 hours. AOD setting is on however the phone has adjusted to my actions and AOD is off during the day. Yesterday it drained 100% to 96% in exact same scenario with IOS 16.03, prior to update.

Just got 14 pro. Looks like "No Cell Coverage" = highest battery usage at 35%. This is new since upgrading from iPhone XS on same software just yesterday. No idea if this has to do with eSIM or if this has to do with "5G auto" which it is set to by default.. should I switch to LTE? could it make any difference. I'm on ATT and I don't think XS had 5G capabilities.. but "no cell coverage" was never the dominant usage of battery life, not even close. Any suggestions?

Before the 16.1 update, my battery was doing really well. I had everything turned on AOD all day, 5G on and would get really good battery life. Seems like 16.1 reversed all that and now the battery life is a bit shorter. Not sure if placebo but just an observation.

Could you share battery graph / stats ?

Battery life has been abysmal on my iPhone 14 Pro Max. AOD on. On iOS 16.1 and using my phone for 3 hours lowers the battery by 50%?

Try a factory reset/restore. Initially when I got my 14 Pro Max, my battery life was mediocre. I did a factory reset and my battery has been great. I set up as new so I’m not sure if you’d go that route. I’m at 80% with 3 hrs 32min screen time. AOD is off. And I unplugged it 7:16am and it’s 8:27pm now.

As I said, 3h SOT can lowers you to 50% with a Pro model if you are using it with lot of small use during the day whereas if you are watching 3h of Youtube continuously, you can reach 80% of battery !

Comparing only screen of time has no sense, this is what I've learnt during my test.

Yesterday, I was at 65% after 2h during the day (lots of small use, 2/3 min every 15min).
And I let the same iPhone playing a Youtube video during 2h, and I've lost only 12%.
