I see a lot of people complaining here about the needlessly large MP size but previous iterations of this rumor have suggested that a pixel binning mode will exist where 4 pixels are combined together into a single pixel. So a 48MP shot would convert back to standard 12MP photo but with better picture quality.

Pretty sure this tech exists already elsewhere as mentioned above.

Will iOS 16 be a big jump compared to iOS 15 to support the hardware capabilities of the Q3/Q4 2022 iPhones?

A great hardware requires a great software to maximize its full potential...

8K video recording - it's silly. It consumes infinite storage, is time-consuming to process even on fast computers, and I don't know anyone who would enjoy it on an 8K projector.

'More is better' - many people actually think that and mindlessly grab such possible 'advantages'.
Filmmakers will -sorry Apple- never make movies with an iPhone, of course. That's not possible, the lens is just too limited.

These days I reactivated my system camera, after a long time I was shooting only with iPhone. OK, such cameras are just infinitely better. Why put in 8K and 48MP now, just because other stupid companies are leading the way? Apple, please stay reasonable. Private image archives will reach TBs over the decades.

Note to marketing: common sense is the real USP.

If and when I do upgrade, I am contemplating whether I should downgrade in storage. Currently I have the iPhone X 256 GB but I have only used 56 GBs of space. It seems like 128 GBs is probably just about all I really need.

You can use cloud or sync photos to Mac to free up space.
As someone who doesn't sync photos to iCloud this wouldn't do a whole lot for me. I do sync my iPhone pictures to Photos on my Mac, but then I sync those albums back to my phone, which results in insanely large picture files being occupying space on my phone.

The vast majority of us never view images outside of our handheld devices, nor do we do edits that benefit from this type of resolution. 48MP is simply absurd for such use case. I know there are benefits for some folks and for that reason I hope there will be an option to toggle between resolutions, much like I have on my DSLR.

48MP is for pixel binning(less noise). 8K video is so you can crop down to 4k while editing without losing resolution. Though I guarantee 8K will be limited to 24p and basically nobody will use it, just like almost nobody uses prores on current iPhones.

Yep! When I got my iPhone SE (yes the 2016 one, the One True SE), I got the 64 GB one; same for my iPad mini. I sync it all to iCloud for everything. Documents included. 22,000 photos and videos and still have 12 GB local space free. (I don't do games, and I'm not a habitual app-collector). I had to finally bump up my iCloud storage to 2 TB recently, tho. Using 218 GB right now. #YouCanDoIt!

My biggest space hog now is friggin iMessage garbage. I got iMessage in iCloud now, but it's still garbage. I gotta believe some group of ninja nerds at Apple are working on some way to let us traipse through our threads and trash the attachments easer. #KeepingHopeAlive #IWantToBeleive

You really should, tho. Then turn on "optimize space" and it's a huge benefit everywhere. Non-recent photos get offloaded to iCloud, leaving just thumbnail locally and re-downloads on demand. The "offload" trick works for apps and other iCloud Documents data, too. Tons of local space saved.

iPhone gets an "iPhone-worthy" size scaled image, iPads get a higher res "iPad-worthy" image, and the Mac usually gets the full size.

You'll never even notice it, either. It's barely an event when it has to re-download something. It takes 2 seconds. Don't listen to the haters; they're just envious. ? even a curmudgeon like me changed my mind! (I'm also the guy that uploaded all my mp3s and legit music to iTunes Match on Day 1 after it was released, closed iTunes, and never opened it again; I even deleted it Dock). #ItWorks

Mega-pixel chasing is a dumb numbers game, especially when most shots will be binned down to 12 anyway, otherwise you’re gonna be looking at a gigantic image with piles of noise. And it’s proven shots binned down to 12 vs a sensor with native 12 are going to have worse low light performance anyway.

If there’s a mega-pixel jump it will be to 16. But I still don’t think that’s going to happen - low light again will suffer.
The jump to 48MPs is for 8K video, and not really for photos or just higher pixel count.
Even though 8K video is kinda dumb for most people.

8K video with 16:9 aspect ratio is a bit over 33MP.
iPhone's camera sensors have 4:3 aspect ratio, so for shooting 16:9 8K video the camera has to be at least 44.2MP.
But it will probably be 48.8MP which is exactly 4 times more pixels than the current iPhones

For photos I'd guess that the camera will default to 12MP, but you'll have the option to take 48MP if you really want.

And who knows, maybe they'll have slightly larger sensor or wider aperture (or both) to compensate the worse low light performance.

I first heard this rumor for 12pro max.
Still remembered rumors of micro led coming for Apple Watch series 5. Till this day, not even mini led.

Not buying the rumor
