With the discontinuation of the 128GB capacity on the Pro models, the “price increase” makes sense. I’m surprised I didn’t consider that possibility, it must be the heat.

Apple sets the trend for the market. If they want to raise pricing, competitors will follow suit with their premium smartphones.

Including 256GB of storage as standard is an elegant way to increase ASP while still providing value.

Dime for dollar

If the storage is going to increase along with the price, it might make more sense from a marketing perspective to keep the storage the same and the price the same. That way it doesn't look like a price increase.

Then some people would actually buy the base model, which would drag down the ASP or average selling price.

I’m happy that 256gb is base but in reality as mentioned they’re just removing 128 and forcing you to buy the next one anyway.

128 use to be perfect until so many apps started to just get bigger and bigger, videos became bigger, and you still can’t clear out the crap “other” In storage.

I reach about 119gb so hate being on the edge watching what I download, 256 will give me breathing space.

Wild that the phone (albeit Pro) will start with the same base storage as some of their laptops.

If it starts at $1099 at 256GB storage, then it’s not a price hike. That would actually be where it’s at now and appropriate starting storage for a Pro device with the cameras it is expected to have.
You think it is appropriate until they announce ProRes as standard and higher image quality which means taking few shots might already fill the storage at 200GB. There is no such thing as appropriate entry storage for Apple devices. They bank on you to go to the next tier cause the entry is just not sufficient. Besides the entry 256GB is probarbly part of the deal to get a lot of 256GB SSDs hence they added them to Macbook Air as well instead of 2 x 128 that performed better!

I think people don't really care how much they pay for an iPhone. Many people around the world buy their phones via +20 months provider installments.

Today you pay 50$ per month for your phone hardware, tomorrow you pay 55$.
Well it depends. In many countries this construction is now seen as a debt and has financial implications.

This is all conjecture. It is appropriate for Apple to start at 256GB on iPhone Pro models. Nobody is forcing anyone to actually shoot in ProRes or ProRAW. If you plan to use those, you know who you are, and can buy the storage you find appropriate. But who else in the smartphone world is starting with 256GB as a base storage?

My point remains, if Apple starts at 256GB on the 6.1” 14 Pro at $1099, then that is not an increase in price over the 6.1” 256GB 13 Pro, and it‘s actually less than the 256GB iPhone X ($1149) 5 years ago. There are many things Apple does pricing-wise that don’t make sense to me, but charging $50 less for an equivalent storage device with much more capability (iPhone 14 Pro vs iPhone X) 5 years later should be acknowledged. Some on here feel Apple is only about the money. If that were true, they’d have not decreased the price by $50 in the first place.

Yeah, I doubt it. The iPhone 14 Pro will start with 128 GB and cost 1099...I don't think Apple will be generous enough to give us that extra storage for that increased price...

See I was right! Lol! Apple will never be that generous!
