Samsung and Apple on the same level of ram?!
I thought Samsung take your eyes on the raw specs....shame Samsung !
In general when the iphone had 2gb ram, Samsung had 4...iphone 4 - samsung 8 and so on...
Now Samsung is laggin behind? if iphones will have 8, samsung needs to offer 16

Android has always been a memory hog, especially because of Java. Objective C /Swift are one big reason iPhones never needed as much RAM, others are app slicing and better operating system memory management features.

So Apple is to blame when they include too little ram and now Apple is at fault for including too much ram?

I am convinced the haters are here just to lambast Apple irrespective of the merits of their actions, and have zero interest in understanding the “why” behind these actions.

When I bought my first G4 eMac it came with 128ghz of Ram and I used it for adobe photoshop, indesign, illustrator. It ran perfectly. Now my phone will have 8GB of ram. Crazy.

To be fair an iPhone 7 still probably blows away the Galaxy S22 in performance

Samsung phones are like those pizzas that have way too many different toppings on them for the sake of it, to the extent that the overall experience is quite unpleasant

Which is completely false, using your logic the iPhone is like a cheese pizza just plain with nothing exciting about it

Features top end Samsung phones have are what iPhones should have and will. It just takes apple years to add them

Why?

Even a 48 megapixel 24 bit image requires only 137Mbytes of RAM.

I can’t see a reason we need 8GB unless 2x 4GB chunks of silicon are cheaper.

It might mean apple is finally trying to make The iPhone better at multitasking. As it stands there is no real multitasking

Well that’s not actually true. It is intentionally constrained at the app side of things to make sure that the end user’s attention and battery life is respected in iOS and derivatives. Which is fine with me. The processes are suspended when not in use.

iOS itself has a whole bunch of processes running all the time. You can inspect them with DTrace via XCode/Instruments

Sorry dude but sounds like you’re falling for the apple marketing on that one. The only real bit of multitasking we have is picture in picture. There are no resizable windows, no spilt screen which in 2022 is still embarrassing. As flossy carter would say flipping between apps in the background is not multiasking.

Not at all. I’m saying it’s 100% intentional and your understanding (and Flossy Carter’s understanding) of iOS architecture is completely wrong and based on the individual being a YouTuber, probably totally driven by attention dynamics and marketing which means saying bad things about apple gets clicks.

iOS doesn’t need traditional windowed multitasking at all. It provides the illusion of it through some smoke and mirrors stuff (background app refresh, clean separation of presentation and data concerns). Mostly where things suck come down to:

1. unlike iPadOS, you can’t do split screen on a phone. I don’t think this is a problem. The screen is too small to do anything usable even on a 13 pro max

2. Poorly architected third party apps.

Edit: sitting here writing this on my iPad Pro with three apps on display…

Soon, iPhone could be the only computer- just connect to any monitor, keyboard and mouse when needed. It's the future. But we'll need USB-C and proper display support first.

Ha no you very much are drinking what apple are feeding you if you believe that rubbish.

IOS doesn’t need it? Of course it does. why on earth should a device be limited when it can be so much more. All phones should have basic multitasking features.

Just because a phone screen is smaller doesn’t mean you can’t do or use spilt screen or do things more than once. Even something as simple as calculator or google and google maps for example. Using an iphone for anything but what you’re currently are doing is a downside

while apps are generally better on the ipad there are many apps which are lacking. Apps on the new galaxy tabs are much improved and will only get better with android L making things better for android tablets.

ipadOS while better with spilt screen it is still very limited. Nothing takes advantage of the screen size and there is again no pop up windows or able to do more than two apps side by side. That 3rd app you are claiming is not a real 3rd app it’s just a flimsy slide over view.

I enjoy my ipad but software holds it back like the it does on the iPhone.

The iPhone could be the only computer? Maybe. But I doubt that very much. You’re saying it’s the future, when actually in all reality, I think Apple’s end goal is to make the Apple Watch eventually replace an iPhone, not the other way around where the iPhone replaces a computer. Now, I’d say we’re a minimum of a decade away from that even happening, because the technology hasn’t matured, neither has the battery technology with Li-ion.

I’m not saying I don’t welcome the iPhone being a ‘computer’, [which in a lot of ways, it can be], but it’s certainly not reaching a point of the ‘only computer’. Not even close.

Apple aren’t feeding me anything. I came to the same conclusion before iOS even existed after working for years on embedded systems in the defence sector and then over a decade working on desktop applications on windows. People really have trouble using windowed systems and switching context constantly. As you’re clearly a power user then your perspective is not that of the average user. It is a massive disservice to the platform to add every feature and possibility. What you end up with is a **** show like windows.

I get the feeling you like whining about stuff rather than using it. I quite happily run my life off my iPad as a power user. I’m SSH’ed into a Linux box doing sysadmin here, using safari to type this and have Apple Music going. I was drawing earlier in Procreate. I did my banking and spreadsheets earlier. Zero problems.

You don’t need to be a power user to want more from what you’re buying.

I’m not whining I’m wanting apple to move forward and give us more than what they are providing. It’s about making improvements and mentioning where apple needs work. Many people love their apple devices and don’t need anything but basic tasks and thats fine but they should still improve to give people more if they need it.

If the areas where apple need improvement isn’t highlighted then how can they keep getting better. you only have to see my signature to see how many apple products i have so I enjoy using the devices and always will but there’s nothing wrong in highlighting the areas they are lacking. Acting like it’s ok to stand pat and give small upgrades Year on year isn’t really acceptable for those who are buying pro devices at pro prices.

iPadOS has so much potential To be so much better And is being hold back.hell the new ipad pros they gave is 2TB and 16GB of ram!! But nothing to take advantage of such ram and power. It’s got the M1 chip but what does it do? Basically nothing Compared to what the 2018 iPad Pro does.

The new tab S8 ultra has 512GB and 16GB of ram but at least has a better file system , pop up windows and a dex system which can make it into a laptop if the user so wanted it.

Most users do not have any issues. I've been using iPhone since 3G days and never once had an issue with RAM.

Those that do say they have issues, are a rare breed and are typically doing things to purposely hit the limit of the system.
If using only safari on an iPad Pro with 5 tabs is purposefully hitting limits of the system then the system is ****. 4GB RAM is trash. 6GB is great. 8GB will be better

Individual application RAM limits are not just determined by the amount of RAM in the machine. It's determined by the model and the OS version.

For example, the 6 GB iPad Pro from 2018 is not treated the same way as the 6 GB iPad Pro from 2020. More RAM can be allocated to applications on the 2020 model than the 2018 1 TB model, even though both have 6 GB RAM.

Yeah nah.
6GB ram gives benefit on 2018 models vs the 4GB ones.
Don’t talk about fringe cases of only higher storage having more ram.
The 4GB ram being offered in 2022 is disgusting.

Yeah nah.

6 GB RAM in the 2018 models offer more multitasking capability vs the 4 GB 2018 ones, but they do not offer higher individual app RAM limits. The 6 GB and 4 GB models from that year are treated the same in this regard. That was the whole point of my post.

I remember when Apple didn't publish specs, didn't get into a spec-flexing war, and noone really cared.
They still don’t.
Go to the iPhone 13 page right now on their website.
It says absolutely nothing about gigahertz, megahertz, ram, clockspeed, nothing.

Apple could easily add split screen to the iPhone. Android manufacturers have had split screen features since 2013 or so.
Apple also has some of the best people in the industry, the most money, and the most popular phone in most English-speaking countries.
Don’t you think that, over the past decade or so, they have surveyed, tested, built, prototype, flipped, flopped, twisted and turned different split screen implementations on the iPhone, and quickly found that most split screen experiences on screens smaller than 7.5-8 inches, for lack of a better word, suck?
If it was truly a feature that the majority of customers wanted, they would have added it.
Apple‘s not stupid, Apple very clearly keeps an eye on what competitors are doing.
And what they have found is that split screen isn’t what’s selling android phones, and most customers don’t ever use it.

I read your post between you and the other member, but why would you even mention this? Doesn’t it kind of goes without saying when you’re factoring more RAM, clearly equals more multitasking capability.

It took apple over 10 years to bring widgets and Picture in Picture. So I’m not convinced they tested much over the years until the competition started to get strong.

Spilt screen certainly doesn’t suck on phones it’s not used all the time but it’s Damn sure useful when you need it. It’s a feature all phones should have. Nothing worse than having to go through different apps going home the going back again to get the information you want.

Each year there’s hope they add it. Sadly like with most features most apple users will find it useless until apple finally adds it

Split screen was great along with the always on display on my Samsung S7 Edge. Multitasking was way better than my next phone, the iPhone 11 Pro too.
They solved the multitasking woes with 6GB RAM in my 12Pro, yet android has a few lovely features that I miss on iPhone.
And my android experience was with a phone from 2016.
No split screen and 4GB Ram in the 11 pro made me feel I bought a $200 phone and not a $1200 one.
This is the same feeling I get with my 2018 iPad Pro and it’s habit of never keeping safari tabs in memory.
