The rumoured differences between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are starting to sound pretty significant to me. I currently have an iPhone 12. I chose it because there seemed very little between it and the 12 Pro which was noticeably heavier.

If the rumours are true, not just on RAM but a whole host of other features, I will be getting a 14 Pro on launch.

Couldn't care less about RAM upgrades, the phones work perfectly as is.

Honestly, the top item on my wishlist is just for Apple to tone down the overprocessing in their photos. Picture profiles help, but it's not enough.

They've recently been making the same mistake Google made this year with the Pixels. Updating the hardware without reducing the software processing that was more tuned to support older, smaller lenses and sensors.
People like you are EXACTLY THE reason why Apple makes lower tier phones like the regular 13 and now and additional regular max. All the pro models absolutely NEED at least 2gb more ram for the pro users which it markets for!

The value is dropping for the iphone. In the past you could buy the lowest tier and KNOW that you are getting the best value apple has to offer. Now apple is creating a profit generating scheme by itemizing every single feature by model and charging more for it. Such a scam

Yea what do people do on a phone that needs so much power? I only got the Pro because it had the biggest screen model. But now I'd bet a good chunk they are going to put some super anticipated feature like AoD or USB C on the Pros or even just the Pro Max to reel people in from the regular Max.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will both feature 6GB of RAM and a newer and faster type of memory, according to a report today from DigiTimes.

The report claims that the high-end models of the upcoming iPhone lineup will feature 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM, a faster and more efficient type of memory compared to older standards. Current iPhones feature LPDDR4X, and that's expected to continue to be the case for the standard iPhone 14 models.

Unlike the iPhone 13 series, which starts at 4GB of memory, all models of the iPhone 14 lineup will feature 6GB of RAM. LPDDR5 memory on the higher-end iPhones will mean better and more energy-efficient performance compared to the standard models. The lineup will look as follows:

  • iPhone 14: 6GB (LPDDR4X)
  • iPhone 14 Max: 6GB (LPDDR4X)
  • iPhone 14 Pro: 6GB (LPDDR5)
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 6GB (LPDDR5)

In a shift from precedent, only the higher-end iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models are rumored to be powered by the new "A16" chip. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo was first to report on the newer memory standard in March, alongside saying the standard iPhone 14 models will retain the A15 chip.

We're just roughly two months away from when Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 14 during its annual fall event. Apple is rumored to have a busy fall planned for this year, with new iPhones, Apple Watches, and AirPods all on the horizon.

The new iPhones are rumored to feature several new features and changes, ranging from significantly improved cameras, to a potential new purple color, a hole-punch and pill-shaped notch replacement, and more. You can learn more about everything we know about the upcoming iPhones with our roundup.

Still no good reason to upgrade from 12 pro max

I photographed a cloudy grey sky and parts of the sky came out blue in the photo. I think I threw up little in my mouth. Apple, what the hell are you up to? Photos on my six year old SE1 look better than this. Natural post-processing is 50X more important to me than low-light photography.

The site is called "macrumors" nobody said this was the announcement. Don't get so upset because not everyone is as excited as you for a miniscule update from the 13.
You said it as a fact like it is 100 percent known, I am not upset about it.

Don't get so upset because someone called you out on it.

Never once did I claim it was 100% fact (and I am far from upset, nice deflection). Again I am sorry you are on a rumors site and get upset over rumors. It's not that serious, go outside and enjoy some fresh air.

I'd like to see 8GB. The XS was the first iPhone with 4GB back in 2018 and it still works decently enough today as a result, at least as long as you don't open the Camera app. In the long run having more RAM helps.

More RAM is good for future proofing yeah

For some reason, opening the Camera app makes my XS chug for seemingly no reason. Is that also the case on the 13 with the same 4GB?

At the basic MINIMUM, ram is required for FEATURES. Hence why ios has very little compared to its android competitor. Every Pro user MULTITASKS. Something that is also non existent on ios because of the low amount of ram. Annoying things like apps crashing/reloading to webpages reloading is a result of low ram. They could never do something like samsung dex for example, because of the low ram. These are all things that the average user doesn't care about and who Apple makes the lower tiers for

"multitasks", lol. That's really ironic when there is no split-screen or any sort of real multitasking feature like on iPadOS. Nobody "multitasks" on their iPhone.

Exactly because its non existent. Hence why Pro users don't buy iphones, apple enthusiasts do. My 4 year old s10+ has more ram and storage than every single apple product lmao. And it is more productive than the fastest iPhone released. That's just embarrassing considering you can buy one now for $250 compared to apples $1500

But you just proved my point. They can't make features like split screen because of the pathetic amount of ram in iphones
The hell would a "Pro" user do on their phone anyways? They should just buy an iPad if they really wanna do "pro" level stuff on the go.

It's got an infinitely bigger (and better on 12.9" Pro) screen, has Thunderbolt support via USB-C, can connect to an external display, can be used with an Apple Pencil for artistic stuff, has tons of RAM and can be used with a keyboard + trackpad as well as a secondary display with Sidecar.

An iPhone is just that, an iPhone. It is not meant for "pros", it's an everyday device made for everyday tasks (exception being ProRAW and ProRes capture from the camera).

If the rumors about A15 vs A16 are true, I think the other change we can expect revolves around Apple's strategy for the "low end" of the market. Typically to date, they have intentionally filled consumer demand for lower cost handsets by continuing to offer one or more of last year's low end models -- and frequently even models from the year before that -- at reduced prices. Glancing at their website right this moment, you'll see tiered pricing represented by two sets of 13 series phones (Pro@$999 and standard@$699) alongside the standard 12@$599, the standard 11@$499 and the SE@$429. So if the processor in the standard iPhone 14 is the same A15 as was in last year's model, what would be the point to buying a 14 instead of a 13?

So the simple answer seems to be: all four models of the 13 will be discontinued and no longer available beyond existing inventory, after this years fall announcement.

Others in this thread have commented that this isn't necessarily a "marketing decision"... but it kind'a addresses aspects of both marketing and production streamlining. Marketing, because the low end 14 model will actually be a marginally upgraded and renamed 13, meaning that customers can get a "new" phone for less instead of having to "settle" for last years model. And it's streamlined, because Apple reaps the benefits of reducing the number of models in active production. It's also the long game in terms of product support lifecycles; Apple reaps lower long-term overhead costs from discontinuing last years model a year or two sooner than with their current product lineup strategy.

Honestly, if my guess about this is correct, this feels to me like it has Tim Cook's fingerprints all over it. He may not be a talented showman or visionary in the same mold as the late Steve Jobs -- but Cook has demonstrated time and again that he could teach a masterclass in streamlining production efficiencies to even the best experts in that field.

You can't use an iPad as your iPhone because Tim disabled cellular calling on purpose so ipads don't canablize their iphone sales. He forces you to buy an iPhone just so your iPad functions like it should. If they let you use an iPad independently, I am sure a large percentage of users would not buy an iPhone. I don't mind carrying around a 12.9" iPad instead of a phone. Hook up wireless headphones to answer calls and you're good
Yeah, cause a 12.9” iPad Pro fits real well in a skinny jeans pocket. Or are you going to wear it as a breast plate and LARP MadMax? CyberPunk? Gladiator, but without the lions and swords?
