More than likely Apple is going to use the same implementation as found in the watch:

  1. Mute colors
  2. Lower brightness
  3. Drastically reduce refresh rate (I believe all the way down to 1Hz)
Anyone saying "kiss your battery life goodbye" has not been using a newer Apple Watch for the last few years.
My Apple Watch 6 lasts at least 30% longer with AoD turned off. Has a massive impact to battery life.

That being said, I think that has more to do with the tiny battery in the watch.

I mean I think this feels like another S update with the rumours? I don’t get how these rumours are anymore substantial than what we got with the 13.
The 14 is the iPhone 12 S,S.
That’s it. And I’m really disappointed I’ll be keeping my iPhone 12. Nothings changed enough for me to even care at this point.

I remember when the first iPhone was released how disappointed I was to learn the display turned off when not in use. I hated it but eventually got used to it.

Now I like it… as notifications come in at a dizzying rate, it’s nice to not have the distraction. That said, I’m really looking forward to giving this a try…

… this is standard behaviour. In fact, I’m not even sure why you thought a display would remain on if not in use.

Because prior to the iPhone’s initial release displays stayed on. I had Nokias, they stayed on. I had a Blackberry, it stayed on. At the time, the display turning off was not standard behavior

This might make me upgrade. Totally happy with my 12 Pro Max and assumed I would be for years more without upgrading, but an always on display would be very handy. Having to tap my phone screen just to see notifications gets old fast. I feel like a little kid constantly poking mom all day asking questions.

Carrier disappears when unlocked
The mockup also shows the signal strength and connection (mobile data or WiFi) is back on the left. It's unlikely they will switch sides between locked and unlocked states. Also there's no space left for the time. This mockup does not make sense yet.

Would be funny if they bring back the battery percentage just to remove the time. /s

Wait... Green dot within the camera pill? Is that similar to the mac green dot displaying when the camera is active? Since these are all just blackened pixels Apple could do all sorts of things in that little area to identify camera, GPS, notifications, etc.

Has this already been discussed/rumored and I'm just late to the party?

You’re just late to the party. Not sure if it’s been discussed before. But surely passed my mind often last week. Not only green or yellow dots. But also blue, red, magenta and other colors could be possible. Each for a different use case. GPS, BT, etc for example.

Edit: attached a quick dirty paint job. 😎
Edit 2: I know the dots or not everywhere aligned correct. But you’ll get the idea.

What can they do??? Have you seen the myriad of android phones who have innovated the heck out of their phones.
Apple is stocked with tried and true but it’s TIRED and MEH.
Apple hasn’t done an innovative iPhone stance the iPhone X. It’s been all MEH since then.
Depends what you mean by “innovation”.
Sticking lights on the back of a phone isn’t “innovation” in my opinion.
A folding phone has potential, but as it is right now, I would absolutely not trust a folding phone to be a daily driver for 3+ years in over a billion hands

Just to point out that just because you wouldn't trust a folding phone to be a daily driver for that many years and that many people owning it doesn't discredit the innovation of it. Even if years down the road folding phones go away that may just mean the majority isn't ready for that or that folding/bending screens just are not the next step for mobile phones. Just look at the recent unveiling of the new Corsair monitor that you can bend to your liking instead of either having a flat or curved only gaming monitor. Sure for now this is niche, but Samsung showing durability and capability of these types of screens helps open possibilities.

I would have been really excited about this before I got my Apple Watch. But with the watch I’ve got no use for AOD on the phone.

Nokia perhaps yes. But the BlackBerry smartphones turned off after a period of inactivity. I’ve used BlackBerry devices for a number of years as well.

Sure, that would be expected. There is no such thing as magic...energy expended to Do A Thing comes from somewhere. The real question seems to be what is Apple Watch 6 or 7's battery life when using AOD compared to its AOD-less predecessors? Apple stated that each had 18hr battery life when the Series 5 was released.

I hope it won't be forced on all users and there will be the an off switch. I like my bedroom dark when I sleep and I don't wany any glow from the phone.
The Watch already has AOD and you have the option to turn that off. There has been some speculation that you might be able to temporarily shut off the screen using a “sleep” focus mode, too.

I can’t wait for people to start complaining about this for no reason

Only thing I see to complain about is that they are still scrambling to get this feature finished in time. Just adds more weight to the observation that Apple is needlessly rushing themselves by setting a one year schedule for everything.

More and more things are getting pushed to .1, which is going to push back next year’s .0 release, and so forth. They really need to slow down especially on macOS.

They stated that but they are wrong. There is a noticeable difference of at least 10% battery life at least on the Series 5. I don’t know on my 7 because I left it off when upgrading, as there’s no reason for my watch to be displaying information when I’m not looking at it.

Might be a different use case for an AOD on a phone, but if you already have a watch that’s kind of its job anyway so I don’t know.

Nah, just the usual Apple marketing tricks and gimmicks. These features are locked-in months in advance. So, Apple plays these little games with “leaks” and “just completed” to gin-up hype and excitement: “look, Apple isn’t even sure if they can deliver this cutting-edge feature. We really are living in the future - get stoked!”

I have a series 6 and keep AOD on always, love it and wouldn't even think of turning it off. It gets a full day plus and that's good enough. I really don't notice much difference between the battery life between my 6 and previous versions.

It’s better than the infamous notch but still there in another form
Don’t expect to much and you won’t be disappointed
The best sub title for the iPhone 14 might be
‘Improved and polished’ if the rumors are true
