Sure, that would be expected. There is no such thing as magic...energy expended to Do A Thing comes from somewhere. The real question seems to be what is Apple Watch 6 or 7's battery life when using AOD compared to its AOD-less predecessors? Apple stated that each had 18hr battery life when the Series 5 was released.
Right, but I just find it incorrect for people to say AOD has a "negligible" effect on the Apple Watch battery life, it actually has a substantial effect.

I am not a fan of the time being obscured by the depth affect with the always on display. I would have hoped that was off in order to see it clearly when dim

These changes coming to iPhone 14 only further prove how much the iPhone 13 was just an ‘S’ release. We are likely keep the iPhone 14 design for another 3 years before they make change to the chassis. Then again, what more can they really do.
"What more can they really do?" USB-C, plus whatever else a zillion smart engineers can come up with over the next 12 months...

Why the hell would you want the display to be on, wasting power, when the phone's in your pocket? Asinine.

And Apple went to the effort to make this dumb "depth" gimmick for your wallpaper, but didn't bother to make icon labels legible against your wallpaper.

Wow, even dumber. Then again, this is Apple, the company that inexplicably makes the time illegible in the Mac menu bar simply because you have "do not disturb" on. WTF.

what more can they really do.
How about what they should have done in version 1 of the iPhone: implement notifications for missed calls. You know, a standard and obvious feature on cell phones even in the '90s. And on answering machines in the '80s... Hell, even microwaves have always beeped to notify you that you left food in there.

But apparently that's too tough for Apple's handheld Unix computer/phone... oh wait, Apple implemented the feature for TEXTS, so they're just being petulant babies by not enabling it for calls.

I highly doubt it's on in your pocket. The iPhone has a proximity sensor, when it's face down it doesn't even light up to show notifications.

Almost all the only calls I get anymore are just spam calls that go to voicemail. In the 80’s and 90‘s that mattered more. Now, it just doesn’t. When I pickup my phone, I swipe up and see a count of missed calls in the phone app icon on the home screen. I don’t miss having an icon on a screen I’m not looking at or some LED that lights up at night to annoy.

Here, are you happy now?

For those who keep saying there's not much point; as I said earlier on...

Nightstand. Subtle light, beats the classic digital alarm clock hands down. Can also be picked up and taken away if you rise before your alarm instead of jabbing buttons etc.

Used this on the Pixels for years and love it.

Seems a very good way of using always on display and is not just the same as others
Well the "notifications will disappear after short period of time" part is not a good way. I really hope to get at least the notification counter. Otherwise the whole AOD will miss the point on iOS. It's mainly advantage is to see missed notifications at all times...

It will likely show the count at the bottom or at least give the option for it

The iPhone 14 Pro will feature unique behavior on the Lock Screen and significant changes to the status bar thanks to its always-on display, according to a source that spoke to MacRumors.

The source behind the latest wave of information was responsible for the bombshell leak earlier this week that claimed the iPhone 14 Pro's display cutouts will appear to have a single, unified "pill" at the top of the display, rather than two distinct cutouts.

According to new information from the source shared exclusively with MacRumors, iOS 16's Lock Screen will directly interact with the iPhone 14 Pro's always-on display, featuring integration with notifications and the depth effect and colors of wallpapers.

The iPhone 14 Pro's status bar will also purportedly see changes as a result of the increased amount of usable space at the top of the display, moving the cellular signal indictor to the left and re-implementing the full-width battery status bar on the Lock Screen and notification center when the device is locked.

The source shared several graphics allegedly based on information from Apple that illustrate some of the iPhone 14 Pro's software changes on the MacRumors forums and has since provided further information. The iPhone 14 Pro will apparently feature the following features and specific changes:

  • The background of Lock Screen wallpapers with a depth effect will be removed and fully darkened when the display is in its always-on mode, while the foreground will be dimmed. In addition, the foreground will be tinted with color and feature edge highlights depending on user customization.
  • Widgets will be visible on the always-on display but will fade in and out at set intervals, unnoticeable to the user, to prevent OLED burn-in.
  • Content shown on the always-on Lock Screen and the full-illuminated Lock Screen must be configured in the same way and cannot be separated, meaning that they have to share the same wallpaper, color choices, fonts, and widgets. The core visual elements of the always-on display itself can be independently customized.
  • Notifications will be part of the iPhone 14 Pro's always-on display experience, and like on the normal Lock Screen, notifications will roll in from the bottom one at a time and remain subtly visible for 10 seconds. Once the display is woken up, the notifications will animate from the bottom and proceed to the user-defined setting of how notifications are presented on the Lock Screen (such as count, stack, or list).
  • Apple may also allow users to enable a notification counter at the bottom of the always-on display.

Apple is also said to be planning to release an update, such as iOS 16.0.1 or 16.1, soon after the launch of the iPhone 14 Pro that will include fixes for issues with the device’s always-on display and wallpapers. While the company is now in the feature’s final stages of development, it is reportedly still encountering bugs and is scrambling software engineers from different teams, including the Apple Watch, to finish the always-on display experience before launch.

The iPhone 14 Pro lineup is expected to be revealed at the Apple's "Far out" event on Wednesday, September 7. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are likely to be available for pre-order on Friday, September 9, and start arriving to customers on Friday, September 16.

As always, apple take something that’s already on Android, and make it better.

I'm glad so many are pleased about the always-on screen. As long as there's a way to turn off the feature, I'll be happy. On the iPhone 15 or 16, that is. Absolutely no reason to trade my 13 Pro.

The Watch has a simple toggle to turn off the AOD so I would expect the phone, too, as well. I suspect that you could also automate that with Focus Modes if there are times when you might want it on or off.

So you wouldn't use the feature. So what? Nobody would force you to. Your thesis is that everyone else should be denied this basic functionality because you've made poor decisions about whom you give your phone number to?

When my parents (or other family or friends) have an emergency, they're going to CALL me. But if I'm down the hall doing laundry, or in the shower, or going out to the mailbox while my phone's on the charger at the time... I may go the rest of the night without knowing about it, because Apple is too stupid or petulant to let you activate audible alerts for missed calls... alerts they already offer for TEXTS. There's no excuse for it; not even that you don't want to use it, believe it or not.

No, but my point was that most people are less dependent on phone calls and I’m not sure that Apple would consider it a “must have” feature anymore. Your insults about Apple being stupid, petulant babies doesn’t improve your arguement.

I hope it won't be forced on all users and there will be the an off switch. I like my bedroom dark when I sleep and I don't wany any glow from the phone.
Hopefully it cam be set to fully off in sleep focus or within some custom time range. And make the sensors turn it fully off when in a pocket or bag.
