Here in Australia you can get a 20-25% discount on the iPhone 13. Given that the iPhone 14 will be a very small incremental update and be more expensive, I would be crazy to even consider an iPhone 14. No thank you. I have an iPhone XS and will grab a discounted iPhone 13 this week.

I think i’ll be trading my iPhone 12 for a 13 Pro in September. The standard 14 sounds mediocre from the rumours and I’m doubting whether i’ll see enough of a difference coming from a 12. At least a 13 Pro might seem like an upgrade. I certainly won’t be paying 14 Pro prices whether I can afford it or not, my principles are too strong on that one lol.

If it impresses you then fair enough. I just can’t relate to why it’s satisfying I suppose and it annoys me how overpriced the Pro iPhones are compared to the standard mainstream iPhones.
Completely overpriced. Yet I still bought one because honestly I had a good trade in promotion from Verizon that brought the price down to what I felt it was worth.

Sorry, what is the point of the “14” then?.
14 pro is clear. But the “regular” over a 13 pro o a 13 regular of last year?.
Maybe we should get back to the “s” moniker. It makes more sense now.
Get the 13 pro with a discount on the 14 announcement day.
Maybe the 14 should be called 13S, as it is just that, not a new generation.
Or 14MMP (more mega pixels ;) )
I can’t wait to have the same CPU in my next desktop computer soon!!.

Why would they do that? No more proprietary port, besides I really think they’re trying to get rid of ports anyway and go QFi for charging. What I’d be waiting for would’ve been the fingerprint sensor on the screen.

Since Apple never discloses RAM sizes in their phones I don't think this will be a major selling point except for those who follow this stuff closely.
I never thought I gave a damn about the ram either but I think
It would help when watching media etc,
sometimes I reboot and the iPhone 12 pro max that I have is a little more snappy
I can't prove it, but Imagine its the ram?

No doubt the RAM is going to help a lot. I just don't think that'll translate into sales the same as a headline that reads "faster CPU".

Yes the non-Pro iPhone 14 may go from 4GB to 6GB RAM, but it’s 5-year old LPDDR4X RAM. I suspect the iPhone 14 will have a higher RRP than the iPhone 13 and there is zero justification for that. Pass. I have an CS, I’ll grab a 13 and will hold onto it until there’s a non-Pro model with USB-C and no notch.

I paid £849 for my iPhone 12 and will never pay that or more than that again. If the standard iPhones are pushing a grand going forwards, i’ll buy the previous years iPhone at every upgrade in future.

From the top of my head, rumors were flying about
  • significantly improved cameras (which alone would be a reason to upgrade for some folks)
  • significantly more Ram
  • AoD
  • improved battery
  • better radios
  • new FaceID hardware, including substitution of the notch with pill cutout (at least in the Pro models)
and perhaps more that I just forgot to mention. There may also be additional changes not rumored so far.

If those rumors would come true, that’s not exactly what I would call ”incredibly small changes YoY and one of the more minor upgrades” …
RAM was predicted to remain at 6GB this year. Hard to imagine significant gains, no matter the specs, in cameras over the 13 Pro. Also hard to imagine significant gains in battery life. No new tach on that front. Better radios, possible. New FaceID doesn’t mean much since the slightly decrease space vs the already shrunken 13 Pro notch doesn’t give us any more info up top. So meaningless. Like I said, sounds like a very minor year for upgrades. Even the design with look virtually identical with the new FaceID module being the only main design change. AoD is the only welcome update but that’s not a big deal. USB-C would be far more meaningful, but that’s not coming until 2023 at the earliest according to all rumors.

I think Apple will try hard to maintain some prices and raise other prices to compensate.

For example the current line-up is
SE - $429
11 - $499
12 - $599
13mini - $699
13 - $799
13pro - $999
13pro max - $1099

I can see the 2022 line up as follows
SE - $429 (maybe a silent rise to $449 if they are feeling cheeky)
12 - $599 (i.e. no price cut)
14 - $799 - strive to maintain this headline price
14max - $949 (introduce a new $150 surcharge for a max phone)
14pro - $999 - strive to maintain this headline price
14pro max - $1149 (new $150 surcharge for a max phone)

They likely know that there is a pool of customers that will pay whatever for the max phones. Just as they know there is a pool of customers who normally get the regular model who will get the pro model this time because they want the extra power of the new chip and see the regular 14 as something old hat (rather than not buying anything as they probably should do).

I see it as similar to Apple Music - they will do everything to keep that headline $9.99 monthly price: raise the student plan price (done), raise the family plan price (likely to come), reduce the discount for a yearly subscription (likely to come)...

what would really make the pro stand out is USB-C and the ability to use it with external displays, mouse and keyboard and stage manager like the iPad.
You could have stopped at USB-C. Pro iPhone with no USB-C is laughable in 2022. They’ve been using USB-C as the standard on iPad Pros since 2018. No reason USB-C shouldn’t have been added to the iPhone 11 Pros.

I agree. There really is no excuse for it except - "we don't want people to have to buy another dongle" - In the meantime, they've made everyone change dongles for USB-C anyway. They didn't have a problem going from 30 pin to lightning.
One good thing about the framework laptop... need to go from USB-A to USB-c? Unplug and plug in a new port module.

I have come to accept this reality going forward with the iPhone. They had to make break somewhere, it just turns out its the iPhone 14. Next year, the standard iPhone 15 and 15 Max will get the A16 while the Pro and Pro Max get the A17. Apple is realizing there really needs to be some significant differentiation between the models just as there are in their Desktop, Notebook and Tablet segments. Heck, even the AirPods have differentiation.

If you are upset about it, keep your phone a little longer and reap the value of the phone the following year.

Actually, I think the reality is that they need to innovate to give people a real reason to move to new hardware. My daughter inherited my 8+ a long time ago and it still suits her needs. Who really cares about the A15 vs A16 vs A17? Most people on a phone are doing web searches; messaging; streaming and social media apps. For the people that need it, yeah, I can see it...but that's not the majority of customers.

My iPhone 8 still works fine but this fall I'll probably upgrade to a 14.
I got a new battery in my 8-plus. Works great.

Now I do photography as a hobby and the phone’s camera is still decent in good lighting but horrible in evening/night.

But I still carry a SLR around too.

Think I may finally upgrade and save this phone for my kid in a year or 2.
