The iPhone 14 won't rely entirely on a hole-punch cutout to house the TrueDepth camera system, possibly meaning Apple may retain the notch alongside a hole-punch design, according to a new rumor from Weibo.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that for at least the high-end 2022 iPhone models, Apple will use a hole-punch design, similar to those of some flagship Android smartphones. Following Kuo's report, Apple leaker Jon Prosser shared renders of what he claims to be the design of the iPhone 14.

Even if the iPhone 14 introduces a hole-punch design, it will be hard for Apple to abandon the notch altogether, according to a now-deleted post on Weibo from @PandaIsBald. The account, which accurately predicted that the ninth-generation iPad would be announced at the September Apple event, claimed that it is "unlikely" that Apple will replace the notch entirely with a hole-punch cutout, and instead, the iPhone 14 may continue to feature a notch but with a smaller footprint.

With the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, Apple did make the notch smaller in width but slightly taller. Apple did this by shrinking the component sizes of the TrueDepth camera system and reengineering the internals. Apple this year also moved the earpiece to the top of the bezel, freeing up space in the notch.

Reporting on a hole-punch design for next year, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo did not provide details on how Apple will house Face ID on the high-end iPhone 14 models if it uses a hole-punch design.

Today's rumor from Weibo claims that Touch ID will not be making an appearance under the display next year, meaning Face ID may continue to be the only biometric authentication option available to iPhone 14 users.

I want the IPhone size to be the same with the Huge Samsung Smartphones!!

Perhaps the iPhone 14 will have a greatly extended telephoto, a notch, 6E, and no lightning or USB C cable at all… It would include a charging pad that’s USB C, but no charger. It would certainly get a LOT of attention. Works underwater?

I just upgraded from a 6S to a 13 Pro and the notch doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I only wish I could see battery %.

Keep with tradition. Meanwhile, my 2 year old Samsung has a in display fingerprint sensor and a holepunch camera.

Don’t care about the notch. I ultimately want to know when they’re gonna ditch Lightning for USB-C

This is what I believe. Apple LOVES having their products be instantly recognizable. They won't make a phone that looks like an Android.
This is 100% correct.

Also, Apple.. Im not buying another phone with a notch. Its just not going to happen. its been what? 6 years? Enough is enough. I would rather get rid of Face ID completely. Bring Touch ID back and have all screen with no notch or hole punch.

The notch is an in between point to a full screen phone. It’s a technology limitation. That’s All. When tech Is far about apple will drop the notch. Not sure why people think they won’t because it’s an instant recognized thing.
All apple needs is that apple logo on the back. That’s all Steve ever wanted. A cutout on a screen isn’t of their concern to show you have an iPhone. Common.
You must be new to Apple. Money is the only thing that matters.

And apple will sell the no notch iPhone just as hard as the notch phone. The getting rid of it will be a selling point. Apple is fine with the apple logo on the back. They don’t need a weird notch on the front of their phones to be their legacy.
Same thing could of been said about the home button. Back then people wined and complained saying they would never get rid of the home button because it would just not be recognizable.
What did Apple do? They got rid of the home button and it was its selling point for iPhone X.
Which would you say is more iconic apple? The home button or the notch?
The notch is a transition point in technology. It was never meant to sell an iconic phone look. Once its gone nobody will go back and say ahh i miss the notch. The home button was the iconic apple phone But things are changing.

When someone is sitting next to you they aren't looking at the back of the phone.
Apple cares about standing out.. Once they go all screen it'll look like everything else. Which will be a great day. The notch was fine the first 3 years. Now its an insult to customers. Especially ones paying these prices.

meh... I use a PIN and fancy camera's really dont interest me so whatever the 14 is as long as it comes in a "big" screened Pro Max version I'll be happy.🍺

Maybe, just maybe, it’s time for us to accept that we’re only gonna see incremental changes to iPhone (and all other Apple products) for the foreseeable future - no radical design overhauls, just improved chips and cameras - until such a time we stop upgrading our devices every 1-2 years and force Timmy & Co to quit spoon-feeding us S-style updates and start actually innovating rather than just refining what the competition is doing 🧐
You're probably right heystu, but I dont mind the predictable stability I get from Apple and their incremental phone upgrades.
My "other" phone is a Samsung Z Fold 3. An amazing piece of technology (in spite of it's crappy OS), but I still prefer my non-radical iPhone as my daily driver.👍

Touch ID is a step backward when both work as they're supposed to, which for Face ID isn't 100% of time the Touch ID on my old phone worked as it's supposed to. Masks are unfortunately still a thing I have to deal with, and I also pretty frequently wear sunglasses or unlock the phone while lying in bed and these cause Face ID to be more unreliable than Touch ID in the same situation. The amount of situations where Face ID would work as it's supposed to and Touch ID wouldn't (eg. while wearing gloves) is, at least for me, a much smaller number. But having both Face ID and Touch ID would solve all these problems.
FaceID always works with my mirror reflective ray bands… idk what pair you wear

not really my other phone has both and it is great.

Summer = Finger Print cuz my sun glasses don’t work
Winter = FaceID due to wearing gloves
FaceId all the time cause all 5 pair of my sunglasses work.. so idk what’s wrong with yours lol

I think the fidget spinner camera setup alone is enough to make the iPhones recognisable. Apple has to let the notch go, otherwise what else are they going to come up with next year to make people upgrade?

Let me take a chunk out of your tv and we’ll see if you like it.
Most videos are a narrower aspect ratio and do not stretch to the sides of thr iPhone screen so the only way the notch affects your videos is if you are cropping the top and bottom of the video. If you are voluntarily taking two chunks out of your videos you dont get to complain about the notch taking 1 chunk out of your video.
