Also, you cannot tell me the notch is not part of their marketing to easily spot an iPhone in the wild / media. Just like AirPods are only available in white for the same reason
The thing about this is if you look at the marketing images (especially for the Pro models) they usually obscure the notch with a dark wallpaper.

Could it be that they're looking to add a hole punch to the Pro models while keeping the current notch for the standard models? It's unclear if that's what the article is saying.

I say give us Touch ID on the Power button like the iPad. Instead of a notch just make the top a whole bezel on the iPhone. We wouldn’t have to worry about a notch or hole punch, Just make the notch smaller and stretch it across the top of the iPhone as a bezel and be done with it.

If they could just put the touch ID in the power button like the iPad that would be great. I don't care about screen fingerprint sensors. They always play up when you add screen protectors.
Unlike the iPad, most iPhones are used with cases, and most cases include metal or other buttons over Apple's. This would render Touch ID on the buttons fairly useless.

Unless they don't cover it with the case like on my Fold 3. But that's a fair point that I didn't think of.

Underscreen Touch ID is dumb and a step backwards
Touch ID is a step backward when both work as they're supposed to, which for Face ID isn't 100% of time the Touch ID on my old phone worked as it's supposed to. Masks are unfortunately still a thing I have to deal with, and I also pretty frequently wear sunglasses or unlock the phone while lying in bed and these cause Face ID to be more unreliable than Touch ID in the same situation. The amount of situations where Face ID would work as it's supposed to and Touch ID wouldn't (eg. while wearing gloves) is, at least for me, a much smaller number. But having both Face ID and Touch ID would solve all these problems.

Solve it the way android phone cases do, don't cover the power button. It works quite well on my Flip3. (better than FaceID ever did on my iPhone)

1. iPad doesn’t support Watch unlock.
2. Not everyone wants to buy an electronic toy that gets obsolete every 3 to 5 years.
3. It doesn’t even work 90% of the time. More like 60%.
My watch has worked to unlock iPhone consistently at least 90% of the time. It also eliminates the need when paying by Apple Pay at stores -- I use the watch to pay.

I went from a 12 Pro Max to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and I can tell you that the notch is as hideous and annoying as it looks, and I do not miss it one bit. I prefer the under display camera on the cover display over the punch hole the Fold 2 had as well. It blends into the background 95% of the time and this will be improved upon over time. I'm not one for taking selfish-ies either though so they could've not had a camera on the cover display at all for all I care. I have to laugh when folks say "I don't mind the notch", and "it is part of Apple's branding". 🤣Of course that is what you will say when you are buying new phones with a nearly identical design from the iPhones released in 2017.

That sounds more like it. Punch-hole deisgns are very ugly. Now lets hope they also stick with rectangular shaped volume buttons than circle ones.

Yeah, I don't see this happening. Personally I think a notch looks better than a holepunch, but more importantly (to Apple) the notch is iconic. A holepunch would look like a nameless Android device. I predict notch until they can fit everything either in the bezel or have it behind the screen.

Just give it a 4mm top bezel and be done with this madness. Will the curse of Jony Ive (the notch) live on forever? Get rid of it.

I'd rather have a bezel like my 6s than the notch. The 14 and 15 are probably being finalized already.
I'm waiting for a redesign my 12 Pro will suit me just fine until then.

Understandable, why bother innovating if people (I am including myself in that narrative) keep upgrading for some camera improvements alone anyway.

Apple fanatics like ourselves (hey this is Macrumours) might upgrade a lot but the Average Joe is not.

Yes, for the space used, but TouchID makes sense in pandemic era.
I would have loved a double option on 13: FaceID + TouchID on the power button (as seen on the Ipad Mini)

Underscreen or power button Touch ID would be a big convienience while wearing a mask
I’ve seen pictures of the inside of the iPhone 13 there’s no space for anything maybe that’s why there’s no Touch ID They even cut the size of the Haptic module in half to make it fit

This is what I believe. Apple LOVES having their products be instantly recognizable. They won't make a phone that looks like an Android.

Yup.

This would look pretty dull if not for features like the notch or the home button.

This rumor could be wrong, but I find it way more believable. I don’t know why people took that previous iPhone 14 rumor as gospel.

It took Apple 4 years just to reduce the notch 20%, and you think they’re now going to reduce the whole FaceID and notch to just a hole punch in 1 year?

Those rumors seem driven by "other vendors do it; therefore, Apple will, too".

Let's say Apple removes the notch in favor of a holepunch. First of all: how? You inevitably end up with a worse front camera than before, and all other sensors are gone, unless you leave some room at the top, at which point you effectively have a notch. You could get rid of Face ID to have fewer sensors there, but I'm not seeing Apple doing that.

I still wonder how many of the notch "haters" actually use a notched iPhone. I hardly ever notice or care about the thing in day to day use.

This, too. Been on a notch-y iPhone 11 for two years and… it usually doesn't register for me at all that it has a notch, except for the rare case where I zoom in on a photo or video in landscape.

In landscape, the asymmetry is a bit annoying. And I would like more items on the status bar, like before. But other than that, I mostly just don't care at all.

I don’t know why everyone makes a big deal about the notch. It’s not in the way except maybe watching ultra widescreen video in landscape. iOS never really utilized the whole menu bar area anyways, unlike Android that puts 173957204729 notification icons up there.

The only thing useful I could think of that can go there would be a battery percentage, but it’s not critical and keeps me from obsessing over every time the % drops by not having it.

I’d rather keep Face ID with a notch than go back to only Touch ID (of course having both would be nice).
You're saying this because...you have the notch.
