It would be a huge leap if they could reduce the notch in one year and then reduce it to a hybrid of hole-punch and under-display sensors in another. I don't know, it just seems unlikely.

“Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that for at least the high-end 2022 iPhonemodels, Apple will use a hole-punch design, similar to those of some flagship Android smartphones.”

Flagship Android smartphones, LOL? More like a plethora of Android smartphones, going back to the 2019 releases! I can understand it might be difficult to cram all the components into a mini, where the notch can be justified, but a notch on a 6.1” and bigger phones in 2022 is a joke for what it gives us. 🤷🏻‍♂️

If they could just put the touch ID in the power button like the iPad that would be great. I don't care about screen fingerprint sensors. They always play up when you add screen protectors.
This:
I have a Samsung Flip 3 as a second phone and Touch ID on power button is instantaneous and never fails. First Samsung or Apple phone I’ve had with fail-proof ID. Better than Face ID in the dark and pandemic.

Same with my Z Fold 3. I've even put the power button fingerprint sensor on my Fold 3 up against my friend's iPhone SE2 side-by-side and it is slightly faster at unlocking than the SE2, with similar accuracy. Just slightly faster, but still, impressive. I have also tried it up against our iPad Mini 5 (given to my wife after I got the Fold 3) and they are dead even in terms of speed, also with similar accuracy. Not a fair comparison in terms of the age of the devices, I know. But Android has come a long way with their fingerprint sensors over the past few years. That and it is getting harder to find similar Apple devices with Touch ID to compare it to.

I just cannot stress enough how completely unbothered I am by the notch. I think Face ID is fantastic (yes even with a mask on, thanks Apple Watch) and in as much as I actually notice the notch at all, which is rarely, its just one of those iconic things that lets you know it’s an iPhone, same as the home button used to do.

All this talk of hole punches (like they’re not distracting) or bringing back Touch ID.. why would anyone want that? Completely mystifies me.

So someone made this “leak” to compensate for the previous leak that basically got a lot of us to decide to hold off until next model. Someone wants to see more iPhone 13 sales this year...

Apparently you’re not listening to people to say they want TouchID. Not all of us own or want to own an Apple Watch, so masks get in the way of FaceID, and I don’t want to stare directly at my phone when I’m checking something when I wake up in the middle of the night.

Ok, don’t buy an iPhone, or pick up an SE instead? I don’t want to feel around for Touch ID to authenticate every time I go in and out of a secure app, and I certainly don’t want to pay for a Touch ID module and carry that around in addition to Face ID.

Looks like I'll be keeping my iPhone 11 Pro for a loong long time. I couldn't care less about incremental camera "upgrades", I have a proper Sony full-frame camera for that.

Timmy & Co. will really need to release something special to earn my money.

I cannot stress enough how much I am bothered by the notch! Mask unlock with my Apple Watch almost never worked, don't know why, I moved on. Thank heavens iPhones aren't the only phones available!

I like my Apple Watch though, and still use it -- and since it's cellular, I really don't need to carry an iPhone around with it. And no notch I might add.

This rumor could be wrong, but I find it way more believable. I don’t know why people took that previous iPhone 14 rumor as gospel. It took Apple 4 years just to reduce the notch 20%, and you think they’re now going to reduce the whole FaceID and notch to just a hole punch in 1 year?

I'm not sure why anyone would take any rumor as gospel, and really I don't believe anything one way or the other right now as far as the iPhone 14 notch, but...

The notch reduction isn't a linear process. This year, they were able to move the speaker into the bezel and that reduced the notch by 20%. For the remaining to be reduced to a hole punch, the sensors need to either be removed or moved under the display. Apple may or may not be working on this and may or may not have it ready by next year. However, this is independent of the speaker being moved and the only thing we know for sure is that they didn't have it ready for the iPhone 13.

Might as well keep the notch if they are doing a hole punch since it is still going to take up some of the on screen content.

I feel like Apple is on a 3-year generation cycle now for iPhone.

X > XS > 11 Pro
12 > 13 > 14?
Let’s not forget 6 > 6S > 7
(Yes they stretched it to 8 but that doesn’t count since it was introduced alongside the X).

Really, how many other variations can you make on the same slab design?

This is what I believe. Apple LOVES having their products be instantly recognizable. They won't make a phone that looks like an Android.
The notch is an in between point to a full screen phone. It’s a technology limitation. That’s All. When tech Is far about apple will drop the notch. Not sure why people think they won’t because it’s an instant recognized thing.
All apple needs is that apple logo on the back. That’s all Steve ever wanted. A cutout on a screen isn’t of their concern to show you have an iPhone. Common.
