I’m the same and I think the major refresh is next year for sure. I’d love to get 15 Pro, but I think I can get through another year with the 12P. Still debating. A17, X70 and Pro-Motion are the big upgrades for me. I always debate Pro Max, but they’re just cartoonishly big for me and I have big hands. Periscope lens though… Apple never makes it easy. The last phone I was actually excited about was X. I think 16 could be that exciting redesign and it makes more sense to upgrade to an exciting new product instead of the ultimate refinement of what I already own. The three year super cycle itch is real though and I’ll be watching.
Waiting on the 16 Pro was also my starting point (bigger screen and periscope rumours etc.). But Apple rarely (never?) update the look of the iPhone two years in a row. As such, the 15 Pro, with its new material and curves, could set the tone for the next three years. The 16 and 17 would then be all about screen/camera updates, and slowly bringing features down to lower models. Then, at 18, it goes full screen (no island), and we get the next ‘major’ design upgrade. In which case, the 15 Pro, is the way to go…

I can’t remember the last time I was this excited about a new iPhone. I think it’s because my 14 Pro has been my least favorite of them all. The battery life, heat management, faulty camera modules, etc.

Next time you are at the Genius Bar, ask, “hey what’s up with the 14 pros?”, then sit back. Maybe I just got someone at the end of a long day, but they let it rip. Not a great release for them.

I honestly just want a lighter phone with better battery life.

I haven't been excited about an iPhone since the 6s. My 13 pro already does 10x what I need it to do, so I don't even care what apple offers in new models.

Reducing the weight should be a priority, as should making it thinner. I know...Jony Ive and his obsession with thinness was bad for Apple. But that doesn't mean the iPhone should get thicker and heavier every year.

Frankly, I never complained about thinness in the iPhone. It was only really a problem for the MacBook, especially the MacBook Pro, where thinness led to the problematic butterfly keyboard and overheating issues with Intel's inefficient processors.

Let's see if apple will include an USB-C cable. I read everywhere that now only one cable needs to be carried and that everyone has such a cable (I don't). So maybe Apple will not include it for saving some bucks ehhm I mean for the environment and climate.
Even though Apple is switching to USB-C for the 15 series, I still have to carry a lightning cable for my AirPods Pro, at least 2-3 USB-C cables to charge my new iPhone 15PM, iPad Mini, and 12.9 iPad Pro at the same time, and my Apple Watch charge cable. I can use my 20W brick to charge 1 device at a time, and also take my Mophie brick that can charge 2 devices at the same time. I’ll still be carrying the same amount of cables and charging bricks as I do when going out of town as I did with my 14PM.

Exactly, nobody wants to be seen with a 2-lens and/or _small_ phone. You need 3 lenses and a massive phablet to qualify for the "blue bubble" of phones.
I don't know what you mean by "small" in this context. Is the regular Pro, or regular iPhone, "small"? Personally I don't need 3 lenses and a massive phablet, in fact the "massive phablet" part is a turn-off since I really, really enjoy 1-hand use.

I own a 13 Pro and I wouldn't say the new features are not worth the price tag (that's down to each individual) the upgrade is substantial vs the 13 Pro.
I still won't upgrade until the camera bump is gone though.
Never the less a very good upgrade!
So you’d be ok with a phone that’s 5 or 6 or even more mm thicker??!
Camera bumps are here to stay, you need lenses …

I'm not going to purchase thicker than last year's phones. My 14 is already too bulky & heavy for my likes. I've just been waiting for a surprise announcement, but apparently no.
I'm glad I kept my 13 mini, which I will 'downgrade' to, after the announcement, if these leaks come true.

Nobody said it was going to be a good surprise.

I absolutely love Titanium as a material. It’s super high tech and I can only congratulate Apple in introducing it. Back 30 years ago when I was a youngster, carbon fiber and titanium was always the first choice and used in my RC kit cars from Tamiya to win that RC cars racing competition once a year.
However, I do admit I most likely will not upgrade. My current iPhone 14 Pro has been the best iPhone I have ever had.
Apple will have a challenge to ever topping that. And the black anodiced stainless steel frame is excellent. A no complain phone, I just love it.

If you simply count it down like the old ways then we are starting with 11 series then the 12 series would be 11S.

13 series would become the 12 series and the 14 series would become the 12S series.

So 15 should be the 13 series so 15 is a non-S series.
Back when there were a lot of performance deficiencies to work on, the base numbers in a phone series were for visual changes like new case designs. The S numbers were where the visuals didn’t change but the performance we bumped up. Think of “S” as “Speed”. The 12’s were a whole new visual design so they would not be S’s. It was not a strict 1/2 pattern. That would give us 12, 12s (13), 12ss (14), and this year would be the iPhone 13.

Now you can see why Apple abandoned the “S” nomenclature. Modern phones have reached a performance level where greater performance isn’t really needed. Now they iterate on design and add new features like cameras and sensors.

I was just using their old counting mechanism and started with counting from 11 series because that was when Apple abandoned their old naming scheme. You are right about the fact that the most recent devices not be really categorized into S or non S like in the old days.

I think the iPhone X was a breath of fresh air. New design, face recognition, gestures interface (stolen but nonetheless new to the iPhone).

The rest of the stuff is S. This upcoming iPhone 15 Pro is really iPhone X SSSSSS.

I can understand the desire for less bulky phones. I’m sporting a 12mini myself. But if you look at the 15 iPhones, the regular phone is not thicker and the Pros are only 0.4mm thicker. Less than half a millimeter. You might feel it holding both your 14 and a 15 at the same time, but after a day or so, that 0.4mm will seem normal. Of course, since you have an iPhone 14, this phone will be minimally different for you so there is little need to upgrade this year anyway. We don’t need to upgrade every year. Perhaps there will be more differences next year and you will be more in the mood for an upgrade.

I am all for the 14 Pro to iPhone 15 Pro weight reduction, but why thicker???

I don’t find my 13 pro max heavy in the hand, but it can easily pull down my shorts if the drawstring is untied 🤭

Only 0.4mm thicker and only in the Pros.

It might be driven by camera changes in the Pros.

There are also rumors that they are using a new, double-layer battery that gives better battery life but is just ever so slightly thicker. There is a recent rumor that the new Pros will have better battery life. Perhaps they will get this new battery or maybe it is just from the new 3nm SOC or maybe both.

Or maybe the iPhone is just getting a little older and getting a dad bod. 😉

We do get a lot of info about the new phones in the days leading up to the announcement but there are still always surprises and details that only come out in the Apple events. It’s still worthwhile watching those events.
