When the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models were introduced today, Apple's Kaiann Drance mentioned that they support the next-generation Qi2 charging standard, but that apparently does not mean that Qi charging will be faster.

Apple's technical specifications page for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models says that Qi-based charging is still limited to 7.5W, while MagSafe charging is 15W.

Qi2 is a new wireless charging standard built on MagSafe charging technology supplied by Apple. It includes a Magnetic Power Profile that ensures that smartphones are "perfectly aligned with charging devices" and it is meant to offer "improved energy efficiency and faster charging."

Some companies have announced Qi2 chargers that can charge at up to 15W, the same as MagSafe, but it does not appear that Apple's iPhones will support the faster 15W Qi2 charging functionality.

There have been no improvements to MagSafe charging speeds either, and rumors that suggested we could see quicker wired charging may also be incorrect. 9to5Mac said that the iPhone 15 models could support faster charging speeds using a 35W charger, but Apple's technical specifications page doesn't list any improvement to fast charging.

The iPhone 15 models will continue to charge to 50 percent in around 30 minutes with a 20W or higher adapter. It is possible that using a 35W or higher charger will speed up charging, but that will need to be figured out once the devices are released.

They might change it with an update later on. Wouldn't be the first time.

Flashback:

"The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X all support wireless charging using the Qi standard. It means that iPhones are now compatible with hundreds of chargers out there. But iPhone Qi charging is currently limited to 5W, or the slowest wireless charging speed. Apple is currently working on iOS 11.2 — this update is going to support 7.5W charging, as MacRumors spotted."

Maybe a new wireless charger is in the works. Seems a bit weird to still be selling a Magsafe Duo with lightning connector, for example.

Edit: oh nvm, they don't sell it anymore it seems

I’m gonna switch to a brand that’s giving me more bang for the buck. Let’s be honest, almost every midrange Android has 120hz screen refresh and a decent camera. This lack of innovation for a supposed to be premium brand has reached the tipping point for me. iPhone is like Siri, it’s the same as the year before, before, before, before and before. I’m living in Europe and the cost of owning an iPhone is almost double as in the USA. It’s not even worth considering anymore. What a boring update and lady like color scheme or should I say color shame.

so bad, I know its because iPhones still over heat and dim so they cant change faster, but its not fair now with usb c and the pros having a faster port we still cant charge faster or get better batt life, im getting sick of apple now days
Time to switch over to Samsung for me. They have been too stagnant while Samsung is innovating every year

As much as I agree with you on the innovation front, iOS still leads the mobile industry in terms of software update support. I would much rather have a stable and secure OS than something similar to Windows...

Yup....seems like that...easily could've been a tight 1 hour keynote without all the fluff too...
A short press release on their website would do:

We have some incremental updates in our iPhone line up and watches. Check out our website for specific changes highlighted in red. Because our products are almost the same with 90% tech from 4 years ago, we have been able to reduce our prices by 50%.

MagSafe still being so much slower than USB-C (Wired) continues to be a major let down. Wireless charging seemed to open up so many opportunities but I almost never use it except for at the bed side where know I'll have the whole night to charge and may want to grab or put back as easily as possible. But during the day when charging rarely would want to put on MagSafe to charge quickly before going out, because charges so slowly vs the cable, and plugging in a cable only takes an extra second vs on a pad. Same with the MBP and MagSafe Power. Was so excited to finally have that but have used it 0 times, because again want to charge as fast as possible and because since it's not usb-c would be an extra cable I'd have to carry for only one use. Wish they could develop a usb-c cable with magsafe built in but so far no luck. Someday hopefully they will feel confident offering magsafe at full speeds and we can all have a truly wireless life in general.

This update is meant for those who still holding on to their iPhone 12 and earlier models.

I'm on 12 Pro and I don't see much reason to upgrade. 15 Pro is the same size, same weight (2 grams less), slightly thicker, camera bump is more significant... It has a few improvements here and there but none that make it a noticeably better phone to spend 1200 € on.

That was the thing holding me back from switching to the affordable site. But even that isn’t the case anymore. A lot of Android brands come with over the air updates as soon as google releases it and support your phone for the same time Apple does.

Tim Cook should be ashamed!

You realize that fast-charging batteries reduces their lifetime, right? It's harder on the battery cells. So when they do deliver it and batteries don't last as long, will you complain about that, too?

You can tell this update wasn’t geared towards people on the 14 line. This is the first year in a while I’ve actually felt like this is an S year upgrade.

I’m on iUP so I will upgrade but the more info that comes out the less excited I get about it. Oh well, that’s the beauty of iUP, I’ll just upgrade again next year haha
