Dynamic continent, removed both SIM card trays, and now no mute button. Way to kill the usability of the iPhone Apple…
I travel a lot in Latinmaeroca and phisical SIM card tray, at least 1, is mandatory. Very few countries /carriers support eSIM and AFAIK NONE support it for prepay in Latinamerica. What choices do I have???. Buy a super expensive data roaming or buy another (Android) phone for travels and my iPhone for home?. Really not smart move for customer Apple, really poor use case thinking.

Completely wrong take. This is the one thing that can't be a software control or part of Focus because of it being a stupid switch. Thank goodness they are finally changing it.

You're also just assuming they won't add a visual indicator, one that is even easier to see than today. Which is a bad assumption.
Just because there is a physical switch doesn't mean there also couldn't be a software mute function (or a valid volume = 0 in scripting/api/focus). This is just an oversight on Apple's part.

First, I'm loving the new overall design so far. I'm OK with the volume up/down "button", but I am definitely concerned about the mute "button." I hope they come up with a good way to prevent accidental mute ON/OFF actions. The current mute switch feels more secure to me.

Probably “tap and hold for 3 seconds.” The volume will almost certainly be sliding to avoid accidental input.

No, you're completely wrong. The fact that there is currently a hardware SWITCH which has specific states is precisely why there is no software control, and there cannot be one with such a switch, because state cannot change unless the switch changes.

Changing it to a button that has no state, and instead communicates state with a visual indicator, is the answer.

Mute button is not something I’ll ever see as an advantage over the switch, which quickly tells me if the phone is muted or not upon touching it or looking at it. Change for the sake of change.
Exactly I love the bright orange letting me know I am on mute gonna be a pain to tell with these taptic buttons do not like this change I am on the IUP program but considering seriously staying with my 14 ProMax for extra year or more to see what happens with these purported changes. Unless (as alway is case with me) they do something significant with cameras that always gets me LOL

iPhone 15 is starting to look like a very solid update. Nice tweaks here and there to freshen the device up a bit. Still want to hear more about the A17 and camera.
I personally do not care if the A17 is twice as fast as the A16 in my 14 Promax already a fast device. Indeed the camera is always my weak point where they get me LOL

Dude, you can literally change the mute status in software already using AssistiveTouch. All it does is desync the software state from the physical switch, and then when you toggle the physical switch again it reverts to whatever the switch is set to.

I do prefer the classic iPhone 4 button design but I think it might be time for a change. A good change! It does remind me of Macbook Pro Touch Bar.

I also have a feeling we will be able to do more with the unified pill shape button then just changing the volume.

Iphone 4 form factor was my favourite of all time.

In regards to removing/unifying the mute button, why? I like the feedback of knowing it has Clicked and can, as others have said, know if mute is on/off without getting the phone out of my pocket. Great for meetings.

Fascinating....when you have a mature product, like the iPhone, to differentiate it from year-year, you come up with these minute and ridiculous changes for the sake of change.
Yep unless as I said elsewhere unless they have significant camera changes (one of of my big uses) I will stay with my 14 ProMax for extra year and see what the 16 Pro series brings, we shall see this fall

Not sure how I feel about this. I like feeling the two separate volume buttons in my pocket.

Also... solid state? So I wonder how well they will work in a case?

🤔
Yep I like the ability to feel the two buttons without having to look. I suppose I can get use to feeling two ends of the single Taptic “button” but it will have to be elevated and like mentioned elsewhere the cases will need open areas for these touch surfaces. Lots of questions for now

Wouldn't a mute button be easier to accidentally press in your pocket? Unless it requires skin contact like the iPhone 7 home button.
If all these buttons require skin contact that will require that area (if image is close to truth from purported CAD drawings) that will need a big open area on the cases so you can touch unless they are elevated surfaces like image shows?????
