Dude, you can literally change the mute status in software already using AssistiveTouch. All it does is desync the software state from the physical switch, and then when you toggle the physical switch again it reverts to whatever the switch is set to.
Yeah, assistive touch, not part of the normal control like iPad for instance. Because its far from ideal.

Hopefully, they (a) work in a case, (b) work with gloves on and (c) don't accidentally trigger in a pocket.

If it's anything like the macbook trackpad, it'll fail (a) and (b), so I'm expecting something different.
Yep these are my concerns also. And why unless the camera upgrade is as good as they say with telephoto (apple always gets me with camera improvements one of my big iphone uses LOL) I will stay with my 14 ProMax and avoid IUP this year.

It looks very nice. Looks more futuristic! I just hope the haptic feedback is well responsive and efficient.
Needs to be raised I like the old style better. If I cannot feel it with fingers in a case as I can now then it requires more effort to look and see the volume “bar” and also the mute button which I use in cases where I do not want phone to ring. I like the ability to feel the separate up and down with my fingers without much of a glance or look @TheYayAreaLiving 🎗 so the “futuristic” look is MEH if this impedes how I use my phone LOL. Of course you know the telephoto camera upgrade will likely get me not this stuff. Otherwise maybe will keep 14 ProMax and let the rest of you try it out for a year LOL

I would love to see the new screen support the Apple Pencil.

That's laughable. You cannot feel any such thing.

And with ring/silent being added to Focus, you won't need to "feel" for it, because it will always be set correctly.
Your comment is what is laughable. Yes, we can feel any such thing. I use the switch by feel all the time without ever having to look at the phone. And being a soul that never uses focus, I don't care to learn how to use it.

It's very unlikely to have an visual indicator. If anything, it will just be displayed on the AOD or the Dynamic Island.

So I can no longer tell if my phone is muted in a sensitive situation by simply sticking my hand in my pocket and feeling it?

Call me petty, but I will never own an iPhone again if they remove the switch on all the models. This is not the first or even the fifth genuinely useful feature that brought me to iPhone originally that Apple kills for the sake of “change.”

Different doesn’t mean better, Tim. If it works, leave it alone!
I bet you said that about the introduction of the notch too.

Unfortunately my iPhone 14 Pro Max lacks a SIM card slot in the USA which clobbers international travel. No points of entry in Southern Africa had a shop that could program an e-sim. So I have to carry a 13 Mini to be able to do just that, have a variable second number in world traaveling. A giant step backwards to have to carry two phones where one worked for the last three years. And no, I did not want to get a Canadian or elsewhere iPhone.

I do prefer the classic iPhone 4 button design but I think it might be time for a change. A good change! It does remind me of Macbook Pro Touch Bar.

I also have a feeling we will be able to do more with the unified pill shape button then just changing the volume.

Best design ever IMO :)

If all these buttons require skin contact that will require that area (if image is close to truth from purported CAD drawings) that will need a big open area on the cases so you can touch unless they are elevated surfaces like image shows?????
Good point, I didn't think about that.

And I'm going to make a prediction, the volume control will work as a touch sensitive slider instead of a button.

I'm kinda happy right now that I got iPhone 14 Pro.
Me as well. Unless the telephoto upgrade in the Pro/Ultra end is significant I might sit out the 15 and wait for the 16 with fingerprint and such LOL. Love my 14 ProMax and in fact I could easily go with a two year upgrade cycle in iphone Pro/Ultra series (kind of what I see with the ultra watch I have) in my apple IUP program.

Same here. I just got my 14PM and ... I REALLY like it and lucked out in the battery department so ... I might sit out the 15 and let them perfect the new design for a year or two. I like what I see tho. But I won't kid myself, every year all these rumors pop up and a lot of them are ... :p

Even if the telephoto is worth it, I'm going to wait for 16P atleast. Makes no sense for me (and for most tbh) for yearly upgrade.
