Iphone 4 form factor was my favourite of all time.

In regards to removing/unifying the mute button, why? I like the feedback of knowing it has Clicked and can, as others have said, know if mute is on/off without getting the phone out of my pocket. Great for meetings.

More than just meetings, this will literally send somebody to jail.

Judges HATE when phones ring in their courtrooms. They especially hate it when attorney phones ring. And this is going to result in accidental unmutes.

It's annoying in meetings. It can get you locked up for contempt in court.

In our post Apple Watch Ultra world, I wonder if that button isn’t actually a mute button but rather a programmable button which will be sold as one of the exclusive pro features. Imagine a single click could trigger the usual mute/ unmute function while a double click could trigger some custom action such as:

- Auto launch camera and start recording
- Open messages app
- Start audio recording
- open notes

Well you get the idea.

If so, it needs to be placed at a more accessible location

One benefit to a mute button over a switch is the ability to reassign it to something elseif you don't need use mute. It'd make a pretty good shutter button for the camera.

Even if the telephoto is worth it, I'm going to wait for 16P atleast. Makes no sense for me (and for most tbh) for yearly upgrade.
Well depends what the telephoto is I thought it was more significant than latest rumors are suggesting a 6X telephoto which is only twice the 3X on my 14 ProMax. If 6x I will see but may wait on 16 like you,

Apple should make the base functional design of the iPhone the same whether Pro or not, with the upgrades in components like the processor, camera etc. Differences in things like buttons merely create the impression that “non Pro” is equal to “budget”. We already have the SE for that.

This. An old Pro might actually be a better buy than a new base iPhone now.

Fascinating....when you have a mature product, like the iPhone, to differentiate it from year-year, you come up with these minute and ridiculous changes for the sake of change.
I doubt these are changes just for the "sake of change" When you have a mature product you can finally start paying attention to small details and refining them to make the overall product better. The more "solid state" the iPhone becomes the fewer places for mechanical failure and water ingress it has.

I agree with others who've said that this is a backward step because they will no longer be able to tell if their phone is muted simply by feeling for the switch position with their fingertip.

There will no doubt be some advantages to this new design to offset this, but for me this is a really useful bit of functionality lost. Assuming this rumour is correct, of course!

That slot near the bottom looks like a SIM card slot. Are they suggesting it is coming back?

Mute button is not something I’ll ever see as an advantage over the switch, which quickly tells me if the phone is muted or not upon touching it or looking at it. Change for the sake of change.

I could see it *possibly* adding to water resistance of the device... but, besides that, yeah, seems like a downgrade in basic functionality.

If water resistance isn't greatly improved, then I can't see a good reason for this disappointing change.

man this is shaping up to be a terrible release, Godspeed Tim and co. after one of the most underwhelming non-Pro releases of all time last year

[edit: this isn’t even non-Pro. it’s on the Pro model. I’m…truly at a loss for words.]

I agree. How much space do they save internally by replacing the physical buttons? I can’t imagine it’s that much, given they have to insert taptic engines to make up for it. They may even take up more room now. I wonder if it’s somehow connected to the thinner bezels or if it’s an effort to make all buttons programmable (something that may not happen until the Ultra) comes out.

As far as I understand, haptic technology requires your skin to touch the button to register a press. In other words, it won't work through clothing or gloves. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that sounds like a huge inconvenience since there is no more adjusting the volume without taking your phone out of your pocket. And those of us who live in colder climates better take those gloves off every single time we want to press any button on an iPhone.

And what about silent mode? Who needs visual feedback or an orange indicator to know which mode your phone is currently in? Spent an extra 5-10 seconds looking for your iPhone menus to see if it’s in silent mode or not.

I know Apple seem to argue that state buttons with haptic feedback further improve water resistance. The current water resistance is more than enough for 99% of regular iPhone users and those who need more can get a waterproof camera for their underwater adventures.

Also, haptics requires a battery to work, so what if the haptic engine fails? It will make using your phone even more fun, not knowing whether the button works or not when you are trying to restart it. So yeah, let's add more unnecessary features to replace perfectly working features that also drain the battery. What an excellent trade-off!

In all seriousness, this is a terrible idea. Physical buttons don't need batteries, and they're more reliable. Apple should focus on improving other aspects of their phones, like cold resistance, which would be much more appreciated these days. Apple should have learned that their improvements are not always great, and this concept has a touch bar and butterfly keyboard stink all around it.

Completely wrong take. This is the one thing that can't be a software control or part of Focus because of it being a stupid switch. Thank goodness they are finally changing it.

You're also just assuming they won't add a visual indicator, one that is even easier to see than today. Which is a bad assumption.
The visual indicator will obviously be in the Dynamic Island, but since the mute switch is almost always on for me (and I suspect many others), this might be kind of annoying.

Maybe this will finally be the shape I've been wanting for years. I miss the rounded corners, but not as round as my old XS. My current 13 Pro is too boxy. I'm also hoping for titanium for weight savings, especially since I need to go for the Max size phone this time around.

I have to agree here. I can see how getting rid of the switch makes the iPhone appear a bit more "modern"? From a pure stylistic view, a single small switch with a painted orange indicator is a little more "old fashioned" looking than nothing but sleek silver buttons.

Unfortunately, that's a "form over function" argument, which Apple has been known to be on the wrong side of before....

I think a mute button will get accidentally pressed more often than the recessed switch is accidentally flipped, too.

You're suggesting that there will be an easy to see visual indicator.... that works through people's ... pants pockets?

I'm sure that will really improve battery life...

That’s lame. You can really tell when Apple’s designs are based on saving money instead of improving the experience
what on earth are you talking about, if anything, this makes the buttons on the side of the phone even *more* expensive.
Now they have to be touch sensitive, now they have to have haptic engines underneath each one, now they have to develop new ways to hard reset the iPhone…
It is literally the opposite of cost-cutting what they are doing here.
Cost-cutting would be them leaving it the same for another year
