I’m not looking forward to having a button instead of a switch.

Although the silver lining here is since it’s a button, Apple can cloud-sync the mute control universally to all other devices just like Focus filters. Which would be so handy if you have multiple devices.
Why couldn't they theoretically do that with a physical switch? :)

Mute button is not something I’ll ever see as an advantage over the switch, which quickly tells me if the phone is muted or not upon touching it or looking at it. Change for the sake of change.
It'll do more than the just mute I reckon. Probably an action button you can assign to do different things.

Wouldn't a mute button be easier to accidentally press in your pocket? Unless it requires skin contact like the iPhone 7 home button.
They could leave that area open? It would still be relatively well protected by the thickness of the case Itself.

A pressure and touch sensitive button that works as a shutter release when in camera mode? That would be interesting.

Multiple times daily, I use feel for the physical mute switch while my phone is in my pocket. I cannot imaging any other method allowing me to verify phone is on mute without requiring visual or audio - even haptic can cause an audible sound or false reading.

Of course, I had the same opinion of the home button ;) and look at us now!

Mark my words: Willing to bet good money the volume “bar” will act as both a volume button / rocker as well as a slider that you can swipe your finger across to raise and lower the volume smoothly.

I would also not be surprised if these capacitive surfaces offered more gesture support in other applications based on context.

I’m with you here. This isn’t going to be the same buttons except they’re haptic. They will also offer additional functionality.

So I can no longer tell if my phone is muted in a sensitive situation by simply sticking my hand in my pocket and feeling it?

Call me petty, but I will never own an iPhone again if they remove the switch on all the models. This is not the first or even the fifth genuinely useful feature that brought me to iPhone originally that Apple kills for the sake of “change.”

Different doesn’t mean better, Tim. If it works, leave it alone!
Alright. At your request: you’re petty.

Sometimes I wish Apple was floating this stuff to gauge reactions before proceeding with absolutely terrible design changes. Unfortunately, this design is close to completion and likely started upward of two years ago. Unlikely Apple will back down. "You're voluming wrong," they'll tell the naysayers.

Yes feels more like a change to cut costs than to make a better user experience though I’ll reserve judgement until I’ve tried it.

This has been their trend recently though finding ways to cut costs like with the headphone adapter, charger etc…

No, you're completely wrong. The fact that there is currently a hardware SWITCH which has specific states is precisely why there is no software control, and there cannot be one with such a switch, because state cannot change unless the switch changes.

Changing it to a button that has no state, and instead communicates state with a visual indicator, is the answer.
I think that you are ‘completely’ wrong. If the hardware switch is on the unmuted position, software could still mute and unmute the phone if the user wanted so and if apple implemented that feature. The hardware switch could still be flipped bypassing any software setting for when the user wants to be extra sure the phone won’t make a sound in sensitive situations (meetings, funerals, libraries… you name it).

This would work exactly the same as a Philips Hue light bulb: you can switch it on and off via software, but if you flip the hardware switch the light will go off as power is removed And no software bug or unintentional press or siri command will it back on.

Completely agree. My guess is that they'll add some sort of indicator, like an always-on mini OLED-display to the top of the button that turns that safety orange color when mute.
Hahaha….nope. They should just leave it alone.
