I have to agree here. I can see how getting rid of the switch makes the iPhone appear a bit more "modern"? From a pure stylistic view, a single small switch with a painted orange indicator is a little more "old fashioned" looking than nothing but sleek silver buttons.

Unfortunately, that's a "form over function" argument, which Apple has been known to be on the wrong side of before....

I think a mute button will get accidentally pressed more often than the recessed switch is accidentally flipped, too.
They’ll likely give it a “touch and hold” function to prevent that. But I still don’t like the idea of no physical switch/volume buttons.

I enjoy how dismissive most replies are here, over something that isn't mature. I don't mean speculation about rumors, but the assumption that such a button couldn't be mapped to anything else, and is strictly for mute. As a user who always has my iPhone in mute, I would welcome an 'action button' instead of a mute switch, similar to my AW Ultra. iPads of old with the ringer switch could be mapped to rotation lock.

On the subject of knowing the status of mute in your pocket... your hand's already in your pocket, you can't pull the phone out? Does it really add a level of complexity to warrant a scoff? Do you find yourself devoting hours to toggling your mute? The switch already has haptic feedback when mute is active, which could be implemented to a button press just as easily (and obviously will be present if it is solid-state as rumored). Press the button in your pocket until you feel 'on' haptics. Mute is on. Just as easy to determine in your pocket.

I’m sure it’s been mentioned already but… I have a feeling the mute switch will become more of an “action button” like on Apple Watch Ultra that can be customized to do various things.

Most people these days seem to leave their phone on mute anyways, so giving them an option to assign a different function to an always-present button would be beneficial.

Doesn’t feel like an improvement. Lots of decisions made during the last few years seem pretty meh. Bulky phones. Pretty but uncomfortable flat edges.

I’ve gone from wanting (but not necessarily getting) the latest to just hoping that my 11 Pro doesn’t break in the near-term.

Maybe 16 will be the one..

I do prefer the classic iPhone 4 button design but I think it might be time for a change. A good change! It does remind me of Macbook Pro Touch Bar.

I also have a feeling we will be able to do more with the unified pill shape button then just changing the volume.

The iPhone 4 with edge to edge screen would be perfection. Just... Bigger.

The mute switch is long overdue a change. It hasn’t changed since the first iPhone.

That.. doesn't make it bad/wrong.. it could just be that that's the best design for the majority of use cases... What's being described will likely be a serious downgrade in usefulness and downgrade in UX for many iPhone users?

I'm sorry, I mean, it'll be a serious upgrade in "courage"...

I don't want to live on this planet anymore..

Sigh.

Sometimes I think in Apple works people who never use their effects (fruits) of work…

You have great working silence switch which is impossible to push unwanted and then you change it to button…

Then voice changing buttons to something you will press when your hands stays holding a phone when watching video…

More than just meetings, this will literally send somebody to jail.

Judges HATE when phones ring in their courtrooms. They especially hate it when attorney phones ring. And this is going to result in accidental unmutes.

It's annoying in meetings. It can get you locked up for contempt in court.
You say 'lawyers going to jail' as if it were a bad thing. :)

I hate rocker volume controls, that’s the one thing I hate about my Samsung, even after years I’m constantly hitting up instead of down on the volume rocker.

It also makes taking screenshots a pita, separate buttons are worlds better, Apple no!

For awhile nearly all user controls in Cadillacs were touch capacitive with haptic feedback. Owners hated it, so Cadillac went back to physical switches and knobs for controlling at least some of the major functions such as volume.

Apple will learn their lesson the hard way especially when next year YouTube will be filled with videos about how the 14 Pro is better than the 15 Pro because of the side buttons.

I’m not looking forward to having a button instead of a switch.

Although the silver lining here is since it’s a button, Apple can cloud-sync the mute control universally to all other devices just like Focus filters. Which would be so handy if you have multiple devices.

They ought to move that action button to somewhere lower then

Nope. Sometimes discretion is needed.

In our post Apple Watch Ultra world, I wonder if that button isn’t actually a mute button but rather a programmable button which will be sold as one of the exclusive pro features. Imagine a single click could trigger the usual mute/ unmute function while a double click could trigger some custom action such as:

- Auto launch camera and start recording
- Open messages app
- Start audio recording
- open notes

Well you get the idea.

Imagine if we had a easy to reach button, on the very bottom of the phone, right at the center, that you could do these things with... Maybe program a triple tap or a tap and hold to activate some of the actions you mention..

Then, maybe it could even include a fingerprint reader...

Wouldn't that be insanely great?

That would also be one hell of a tiny action button if it's implemented as one
