The mute switch is being replaced with a programmable action button, so you can have it be a mute switch or have it do something else entirely. While it's not a switch changing it to a programmable button will be better in the longterm.
exactly...people still forget that the iphone changed a lot of mechanical buttons for a 3.5" screen

I'm kind of conflicted about the mute switch...

One on hand, it works great and can't be accidentally turned on or off easily.

On the other hand, I'd like to be able to tell Siri to set to vibrate only- which you can't do with a hardware switch.

I'm not worried about accidental muting because I'm pretty sure Apple can program it to recognize accidental presses pretty easily.

The same crying i hear around cars that swap AC buttons into a touch screen buttons...and i have to say...i use to change something to the AC twice per year...i mean come on.... Or those people who are complaining are having manual AC...or they dont have a car

yes, since its on the side...probably will require a hard press to do the switch , so no worries on accidentally press

For this Apple can just easily add, an Action Button on iPhones and leave the mute switch alone. It's a Win/Win situation here.
when he says Siri..he meant, i think, handsfree turn on/off silent mode
An action button means you have to touch it, so its the same thing...either you touch an action button, or switch it

"Programmable" buttons can be found in the Control Center already.

The Mute switch is the OG focus mode. It's quick and it's immediate. There's zero ambiguity.

Most people don't want to cycle through 5 focus modes to reach silent mode. A programmable side button means the user has to look at the display to confirm the setting.

Here we go again, with Apple's PR tricks. Folks, the iPhone 15 design was locked-in MONTHS AGO. All of this is just Apple's PR, trying to build hype about how "bleeding edge" they are.

Possibly getting rid of the mute switch that’s been around since iPhone is a pretty stupid move. It’s what makes Apple, Apple. Simplicity. Focus. Clean. @TheYayAreaLiving 🎗️ is right, just add an action button like the Apple Watch Ultra for that extra extra. I’ve been using the switch to change from ring to silent like since forever. Simple, ALWAYS works and don’t even have to look at it.
Even OnePlus had something similar for a bit on their phones… they got rid of it and their phones suck more now.

Why you have to look at the display? just tell the phone to vibrate when you put it to silent thats it
My god...people will want now more mechanical buttons...for quick dial their fav numbers without looking at the phone...we are not turning back

Why would you want even want action button located where the mute switch is?

Apple could just leave the mute switch alone and add a new button that is appropriately sized and located in a position that actually makes sense for frequent use.

To be honest with you I still miss the old "Home Button" The touch bar is great and all but it's still not the same as the original Home Buttons. The classic Home Button was iconic of the iPhone. There was just something about hitting the iPhone button.

The same reason Apple got rid of the 3D-Touch. Which was also a mistake Apple made.
