I heard a rumor that in lieu of SS, the major changes to the 15 will be bringing the time tested and much beloved touch bar, along with 24 new and improved emoji.:

Why you have to look at the display? just tell the phone to vibrate when you put it to silent thats it
My god...people will want now more mechanical buttons...for quick dial their fav numbers without looking at the phone...we are not turning back

Because you don't know what mode you're in before touching the button.

Are you already in silent mode? If you already are, then pressing it gets you to regular mode. A switch with a red line doesn't have this ambiguity.

still dont get it...you dont remember if your phone is on silent or not? what the hell? I thought we are talking about switch without looking at the phone...like when it is in your pocket or so
even so...to test it, just double press it and you are fine
Again these are smartphones...the display is everything...we are not 20 years ago when both the display and the buttons were important

For this Apple can just easily add, an Action Button on iPhones and leave the mute switch alone. It's a Win/Win situation here.

In a perfect world that would be viable, however it's not as simple due to how tightly packed all the components inside the phone are. You add an action button, gotta make room for the controller of said button, while also having a controller for the physical switch. And that adds more moving parts.

Now you can argue that's not a valid excuse, and you can be right. I'm not an engineer, I'm just a sysadmin. All I know is there's a lot that goes into designing a computer especially a small one, so compromises has to be made if you wanna keep it small.

I get it. Change is scary and we don't like being moved out of our comfort zone. I was on a iPhone 7 Plus for six years until 2021 because I didn't want to lose my Home Button. My family used Windows for decades because we thought macOS was too radically different. But we can't move forward if you refuse to adapt and learn. Fun fact in the PC gaming sphere: When Quake released in June 1996 there was believe it or not, resistance to the idea of using a mouse to play video games. "Why do I need a mouse? I played Doom with the arrow keys just fine." I know it's a weird thought that the gold standard control scheme of PC games people resisted it at first.

If I can learn macOS, you can learn the Action Button.

oh my, button this, button that ... can't wait for Gurman to chime in ...
Whatever, too many rumors already and repeating my comment from the previous thread: When Apple announces the actual phone and we know facts I will make the decision to upgrade or not.

Since there changing the design this late, expect there to be delays at launch

This is Apple's bread and butter. They don't leave it to chance.

You can bet Apple has many teams working in parallel on several different version of iPhone 16... one with mechanical, one with haptic, one with A16 (in case of stuff hitting the fan), one with A17, etc.

Imagine the innovation happening on cooks Apple to have for months that kind of articles….. with all due respect to the editors of macrumors.

No, don't remember. Because you're about to enter in a meeting to discuss a multi-million dollar project and the deliverables. Your mind isn't on, "what mode is my iPhone on?"

I see billions of people not using iphones because Apple got rid of the home button....if this will become true...i will see billions of users not using iphones because of this :)
I get it, its fun to talk and dispute about this..but after 1 week...people will forget and adapt...thats the most powerful thing on humans, the power to adapt to almost anything

sry but Alzheimer's is more important than a switch then
Just take your phone out, and place it on silent...or, keep it in your pocket and hard press it, if it vibrates, then its on silent...if not, press it again...thats it...My god.....meeting a multi-million project...situation on the same level with "silent the iphone without looking at it"
So people in that meeting must have iphones, because a lot of android phones doesnt have the mechanical switch :)

The mute switch is being replaced with a programmable action button, so you can have it be a mute switch or have it do something else entirely. While it's not a switch changing it to a programmable button will be better in the longterm.
If programmability is what you want, there’s no need to give up the advantages of a switch in order get that.

same thing with the display...Apple didnt need to get rid of the home button to make an extra room for display but people adore the screen to body ratio and thats all they are talking about, still.....thin bezels thin
The hypocrisy is big
