Apple fixing HDR, blowing out highlights and an new zoom makes it a big upgrade really

Yep Smart HDR 5 looks like a nice improvement.

...I now understand why some keep their devices 2-3 years, there really isn't too much necessary or even fun change coming year to year anymore.
I have a 3-year-old 12Pro which is still perfectly good, and I wouldn't upgrade it except... my 2nd phone (for business) is a 9-year-old 6 Plus, and *that's* why I'm getting a new 15Pro lol. The 12P will become the 2nd phone, and maybe I'll get 6 more years outta that too!

That’s a pretty handy feature, especially considering how much battery life the iPhone 15 Pro Max has. It usually lasted about two days on a charge, which is slightly longer than other handsets of this size. Of course, over time, I expect battery life to deteriorate and average out at about one and a half days, based on previous experience.

doesn't sound like a battery issue

A17 Pro large cores at 3.78GHz consume 4.2W, compared to the A16 large cores at 3.46GHz which consume 2.9W. This is a worsening in PPW 0.9/W from 1.19/W, by 25%! Where are TSMCs N3 improvements?

The efficiency cores also go from 0.18W to 0.25W.

The A17 Pro is dramatically more power hungry.

That's not good. And did Apple increase the battery size per all the rumors leading up to the 15's release? Rumors pointed to significantly larger sized batteries going in, making the phones thicker, and also the rumors said the A17 would be much more efficient giving big gains in battery life.

Did that not happen?

Disagree. They both look terrible. The greenery looks like it's glowing from a cheap scifi movie. Better control on highlights in the pumpkin looks good, but it's possible to get that effect by touching the pumpkin and dialling down exposure a bit.

Shots like this make me not want to have an iPhone beyond the 11 Pro (advantage on the 11 Pro is the HDR is off much of the time).

I'm a total duntz when it comes to photography... These 2 pictures look exactly the same to me lol.
At first glance you are not wrong.
It is only apparent if you really zoom in and compare…
eg. There is a tad more sharpness/resolution to the brick wall right at the back or the woman's backpack with the yellow smiley face on it.
Also the distant leaves have a bit more definition and less of a general shadowy blur… you could almost — almost — see them as individual leaves.

But it is such a small difference… and neither are stellar examples.

Batteries are slightly bigger. However I am increasingly more concerned with the battery life now that we have metrics on the A17 Pro's efficiency and on-top of Apple's claims of no improvements from the specs sheet.

CNET does a great job with their reviews. I love how they take full advantage of the San Francisco area.

Look at the big pumpkin. The iPhone 14's shot has reflections from the sunlight that are huge and white. The iPhone 15 controls the light reflections so you can see the rest of the pumpkin's colors more clearly without "blowing it out" with large portions of white.

I've been an Apple fan for a long time but man these "reviews" are starting to bore the life out of me. No disrespect to any of the creators.
Which is why iPhonedo is the only one to truly look forward to — as much as I like watching reviews, his are the absolutely the most fun, polished, and enjoyable.

Sounds like he doesn't know the volume buttons already function as physical shutter buttons.
Quite embarrassing for a professional reviewer isn't it
He literally said that he went back to using the volume buttons as shutter buttons in the same paragraph.
She actually mentioned it in the very same snippet of text. People get all riled up enough to write an angry comment without even finishing a sentence.

The Verge's Allison Johnson on the USB-C port:
I know we all have a lot of mixed feelings about USB-C, but let me tell you about a beautiful thing that happened: the 15 Pro Max's battery was low, so I unplugged the USB-C charging cable from my MacBook Air and plugged it right into the phone. No searching for another cable. No dongles. Just a USB-C charger powering a USB-C iPhone

Talk about setting a low bar… 🙄

Prior to watching these videos, I was set on getting the blue titanium. But now seeing natural titanium, that might be the color to go with. Especially since the darker color will probably show the finger prints more (I generally do not use a case).

it is absolutely crazy to me how everyone cares about the cameras. This isn't the iCamera which happens to make calls, this is the iPhone which happens to snap quick photos. Crazy to me.

I'd gladly give up the camera completely for a larger heat sink to keep the CPU cool, and a larger battery. The camera has been 'good enough to capture life's moments' for 8 years already.

I know many will disagree with me but damn, who takes pics with their phone outside of capturing the occasional thing? Just crazy to me ill get off my old man soap box now 🥲

The pumpkin has more definition but the interior (exit sign and lower left corner) is darker. Something has to give with such a wide range of light. This photo is not well composed anyway, so probably not a good example of the phones' capabilities. I actually prefer the 14 Pro version, it is more realistic to the eye, but both could be improved.
