Got to get that upsell anyway you can eh Tim?
This is what all businesses through history have done, as chronicled by Clayton Christensen's work.

There is a clear incentive for companies to continue "retreating" upmarket to more and more profitable tiers, but in the process they end up vastly over-serving most of their customers.

That means that for most customers, the products are already plenty good enough and the added innovation isn't really needed or valued by the market.

So while this creates a more lucrative market for the company at the top of the market, it also creates the opening for a low-end disruption to happen.

These are historically the conditions that lead to a new type of product to enter the market that does the things the customer values well enough, but at a much cheaper rate.

Time will tell if this will happen to Apple, but where things are headed, it's not out of the question.

I wouldn't even buy an iPhone SE, if it wasn't vastly over-serving me. The Nokia 3210 did everything I needed from a phone. Even play Snake to kill some time.

Gimme a reason to want your product!

If only the Max gets the periscope, i will not upgrade. History has shown that it will magically appear in the smaller model the year after. (And during that year, some people will keep claiming that it just didn't fit in the smaller model ;) )

Yes it takes space. So you would need to make the battery smaller. This can only be done with more power efficient SOCs to keep the run time. So only possible in later Soc generations.

Next thing you’re gonna tell me is that technology doesn’t get better year over year. Why couldn’t we have periscope cameras, OLED display, & an App Store in 2007?

The Pro models will have fast usb type c, while the regular models will support Lightning for one last year.
Nope. Regular 15 will be usb c, Ultra will be portless and waterproof with an additional action button for using the camera underwater.

haptic buttons? I like the innovation but not sure about this one. I’ve struggled with haptic buttons. Unfortunately a lot of car companies have done this; and they are frustrating to use.
Would you trade haptic buttons for a waterproof phone and underwater camera?

I buy the new top model every year. Then the trickle down iPhone process starts through the family with my wife getting the prior model. She now likes the bigger screen as our vision is not what it was five years ago so large text really helps.

The top model might also have a choice for 2TB of memory vs the 1TB option now. The USB-C with Thunderbolt / USB 4 high speed transfer would make getting the much larger images off loaded a less time consuming job.

The 2TB option on my M1 iPad 11 with USB-C 4 / Thunderbolt allows for full speed internet and data transfers of large images. and data. Can also download images from my Leica to the iPad.

Its amazing how much money I have saved skipping all these non-essential upgrades since the iPhone X.
View attachment 2115144

The savings wouldn't be that much. It's not like the phones become worthless after you buy them. If you sold/traded the old phone each time you bought a new one, the net cost of each new phone would be less than full retail. The cost over five years would NOT be $6,495.

We'll see, but every year since fall 2018, I play with it each rev at store and walk out feeling just fine. Took over 700 videos and pictures this summer when my sibling came to visit and couldn't believe a 5 year old phone was doing this well.
I’m always shocked when we look at old photos and the ones I took with the original SE look so much better than ones I’ve taken with phones in the years since I used that SE daily. The kids’ SE’s did a great job, too.

My 13 Pro camera probably was defective so it’s not fair to judge by that one but I felt the photos looked like overprocessed garbage a lot of the time. My 14 Pro Max produces a few like that, but overall I’ve been pleased with it. I feel the zoom is sufficient for most of my needs. When I want an obnoxious level of zoom my Samsung S22 Ultra does well.

I’m not sure I’m upgrading to iPhone 15 because I react so badly health wise to iPhone displays. Even LCD is starting to mess with my vision a bit due to temporal dithering (I assume). At least with moderate use my 14 Pro Max is tolerable.

I do think this 14 Pro Max is one of the most robustly featured iPhones I’ve ever used. If it weren’t for my wonky nervous system I’d be super pleased with this phone. It’s got great sound, great performance, good reliability despite iOS having some issues, and it’s a sturdy phone.

I’m crazy about the purple, too. I’ve not gotten tired of it yet.

It seems like Apple's photo post-processing algorithm has degraded in the last couple of years. In addition to my S22+ I have the 13 Pro and while it's often good, it's also disturbingly often burning out clouds in the sky etc, looks like HDR gone horribly wrong. I haven't tried the 14 series as their prices went crazy high in Europe (170€ increase in the base pro) thanks to exchange rate fluctuations and Apple's insistence on not losing a single bit of margin regardless of everything going on in the world right now.

Yeah...maybe the Verge is right. Maybe iPhone updates should stop being annual and be every two years. It's getting harder and harder to justify buying new phones.

That doesn’t make much sense… no one is forcing people to upgrade every year. Only fanboys buy iPhones eve people are holding onto their phones far longer than that.
With interest rates going up, Apple should get rid of its debt. The company needs no debt, why they bother with debt, I don't know. I mean, when money was free, sure, I guess, but it's not as if Apple -needs- a loan.
Tim is a moron when it comes to product innovation but Apple execs aren’t stupid when it comes to finances.

They locked in those long term rates, and a certain amount of debt is good for the balance sheet.

Think of it this way… it’s better to put 20% down on a house and borrow the other 80% from someone else when rates are low (fixed, of course). This way, you can use the rest of your cash in other investments, like stocks or a second home.

Hey Tim Apple, you will never push me towards a iPhone Pro or Ultra, it’s more likely I would go to Android. Screw you for trying to get everyone to buy the most expensive iPhone. Maybe you should only release one model, just remove the option for the public to choose.
You already the option to choose.

Sounds like the 15 won't be upgrade-worthy for most of us, which is good. I am seeing a lot of people here still have the iPhone X and quite pleased with it.

Apple has done a great job with keeping the IOS fresh and ensuring past phones can upgrade to it.

The #1 reason why I upgrade yearly is because I want the best quality photos and videos possible and the 14 has resolved all my issues with Apple Photos and Videos.

I may sit this one out, despite incentives.

Competition is good. Buy what you want. Apple doesn’t care.

While we're still around 10 months away from Apple introducing the iPhone 15 lineup, rumors already suggest that the higher-end Pro models will have even more exclusive features than usual compared to the standard models next year.

In September, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that strong sales of iPhone 14 Pro models would likely encourage Apple to increase differentiation between the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, although it's worth noting that many hardware changes are likely planned at least a few years in advance.

There are currently at least five features rumored to be exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro models:
  • A17 chip: iPhone 15 Pro models will be equipped with an A17 Bionic chip manufactured based on TSMC's second-generation 3nm process, providing performance and efficiency improvements, according to Japanese publication Nikkei Asia. The report claimed that 2023 could mark the second year in a row in which only the Pro models of the new iPhone lineup feature Apple's latest chip.
  • Faster USB-C port: iPhone 15 Pro models will feature a USB-C port with support for at least USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, which would result in the devices having significantly faster data transfer speeds with a cable compared to existing iPhones with Lightning. Kuo said the USB-C port on standard iPhone 15 models will remain limited to USB 2.0 speeds like Lightning.
  • Increased RAM: iPhone 15 Pro models will be equipped with an increased 8GB of RAM, according to Taiwanese research firm TrendForce, while the standard models will likely continue to have 6GB of RAM as they do currently. Additional RAM can allow apps like Safari to keep more content active in the background, preventing the app from reloading content when reopened.
  • Solid-state buttons: iPhone 15 Pro models will feature solid-state volume and power buttons, according to Kuo. The analyst said the devices will be equipped with two additional Taptic Engines that provide haptic feedback to simulate the feeling of pressing the buttons, without them physically moving, similar to the Home button on the latest iPhone SE or the trackpad on newer MacBooks.
  • Increased optical zoom for iPhone 15 Pro Max: The iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature a periscope telephoto lens, according to Kuo. This could result in the device having at least 10x optical zoom, compared to 3x on iPhone 14 Pro models.
Due to the increased differentiation, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said the iPhone 15 Pro Max will potentially be renamed as the iPhone 15 Ultra.

Pushing customers towards the Pro models would help Apple to increase the iPhone's average selling price. The trend already began this year when only the iPhone 14 Pro models received Apple's latest A16 Bionic chip, with the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models still equipped with last year's A15 Bionic chip.

Apple will likely announce the iPhone 15 lineup next September as usual. With many months remaining until the devices launch, it's likely that additional features will surface, so the info we have right now is only a glimpse at what to expect.

ming-Kuo name means it's slightly likey or wrong this might happen.

This is a natural evolution of the Tim Cook era. Everything is getting price-hiked, 3-year old features (such as 11 Pro triple camera) are still pro-locked.
Yes, the profits of Apple will continue to rise for a few more years... but it's not the magic of Steve Jobs' days anymore, when audiences applauded at the prices.
Yep, that’s why is competition is good. Vote with your $$$.

i'm sure people will moan when the 15 pro will not get the extended zoom of the pericope lens next year. To get that people will need to buy the ultra.
