As an iPad user, I find 128gb storage ample for my uses, am I missing something with 128gb now being "dated"?

Same. Not sure what I'm missing. Guess I need to download more apps that I'll never use...

I mostly stream music, so the local library on my phone isn't much. I do have many photos going back years (not so many videos), but I guess they're mostly in the cloud.

Frankly I think increasing RAM is more important given how many apps people generally have open at a given time.

Thinking about it, maybe people just want more space for photos and videos, seeing that the pro phones are more focused on camera work... It makes sense, but if you want more space then pay for that space, since not everyone needs it...

I think that's most of it. Looking at the storage on my phone, I can see that my photos are almost entirely in the cloud, not on the phone. If they were, I'd be using about 75 GB instead of the 50 I'm using now. It still doesn't mean I'd need more than 128 though.

It made me realize I don't look at the "iPhone Storage" setting much. I just freed 5 GB by deleting downloaded podcast episodes.

Oh. I usually have a "Device Monitor" widget on my device that shows storage, CPU and RAM usage, etc. It updates about every 5 minutes which is enough for me to see a recent feed. ^-^

Though if I need to see *what* is taking all that space, I view the official/default storage inspector.

Indeed. And Android phones have had 16 GB RAM many years ago already. What is MacRumors even complaining about even?

MacRumors also really believe "8GB RAM is all you need" on a laptop. I'm not making this up.

It’s wild, there’s a strange contingent on MacRumors that for some reason doesn’t want Apple to ever upgrade the iPhones ram. You can often see these same people saying they won’t buy another Apple computer until it has terabytes of ram. Yet a device that does so much, that we carry on us all day long, that has the lowest ram of any phone in its class, then all we hear is complaints. Like why wouldn’t anyone want the iPhone to work better? Do people enjoy apps reloading every time they use the camera?

You can’t beat physics, Apple can claim all day long how “efficient” iOS is, but a bottleneck is a bottleneck. Android phones with higher ram multitask better and don’t suffer these problems caused by Apples stinginess with ram.

In Android flagships you don’t have to worry about the phone bogging down because there isn’t enough ram, who wouldn’t want more in a phone that can cost over 1500 dollars that they might keep for 3-4 years?

Weird place.

Apple if this rumor is true you got it wrong again. I know it's all about the money but for people who have had iPhones for many many years like us that is not enough starting memory. Yes I know we need to clean up our phones but I would rather just keep memories of pictures and videos on my phone.

Some need more. For example, I keep lossless music on the phone, I have a lot of it, and this takes a lot of storage. I don't want to pay for Apple Music, I don't think it's worth the cost. In the past I paid for it and when I unsubscribed it completely destroyed my library (with my own music), so I won't repeat the experience.

Storage is cheap, really cheap. But Apple charges hundreds of dollars for small upgrades (256Gb to 512Gb is a really small upgrade that costs hundreds from Apple, while a whole 1TByte M.2 SSD costs $40), and the only apparent reason is to force people to iCloud. I don't like being ripped off and I don't want to pay for iCloud either, it's an extra monthly cost and it locks me in to the iPhone, which I don't want.

I'd certainly expect an iPhone 5 with the word Pro in it should certainly have at least 128GB, though it's not really that much. Basicaly enough room for a small song collection and some photos. But I guess that's the best we can expect in 2012. Oh wait you mean this is a about the iPhone 15 in 2023?!?!?!? And 1TB isn't the cheapo model? LOL

So there's not a more advanced camera, or SoC, or USB-C port, with Thunderbolt speeds on the Pro Max version? Nothing else has changed that -might- increase production costs?

Gotcha. 🤔
At the same time you see 48 MP main camera for the normal phones, titanium and 8 Gb at the pro and other improvements.
What bothers me is that I feel like you guys genuinely believe that I’m being irrational here. Improvements are meant to come at similar price points. If the price increases every release, nothing’s made more accessible; there are just higher and higher “tiers” introduced every year.

The needle does not move if everything else moves along with it.

Yes, if such radical improvements are made in one swift go that the production costs go up astronomically, then of course they should be passed on to the consumer. But let’s not pretend that that’s what’s going on here.

Until you’re in a hotel, their Wi-Fi maxes out at 2MBPS download, and it’s located somewhere with poor cellular coverage. This has happened to me twice this year. When you have no streaming and no cloud, having that extra onboard storage space sure comes in handy, particularly if you’re in a national park or somewhere you’re inspired to shoot photos and 4K video and you’d like to listen to music.

May I ask why on earth you would need music, or any technology for that matter, to soak in our national parks?

Enjoy being present and connect with nature. You’ll be surprised how amazing it is when you’re not looking through a screen. No one ever looks at those photos anyways.

I have an iPhone 13 with 128 GB of storage and I’m not even using half of it yet. Not sure why so much storage is needed. Do people just have hundreds of 8K videos and 48 MP RAW photos or something?
Some people like to keep all of their photos, videos and movies on their devices, due to reasons like spotty service sometimes, or they just like having it on their phone.

If that's the case, I'll say screw it & go for the full 1 TB, especially with the Periscope camera & in which taking 4K pictures & recording videos in 4K will take up a ton of space in general & in which apps are getting larger & larger.

Unless there's an app that will help consume less space when taking pictures or recording videos in 4K (I think that ProCamera does it).

I'll gladly pay $100 more for a titanium frame, 2GB more ram, periscope lens and USB-C over a 14PM.
Same here.

You state "Apple can claim all day long how “efficient” iOS is, but a bottleneck is a bottleneck."

You are wrong. It really is about how efficient OS and apps are. Extra RAM is of no value unless it is used. And a phone with one OS and 1.2x RAM does not necessarily perform better than a different OS with 1x RAM.

If there is a RAM bottleneck then yes we need more RAM. But I have not seen "...these problems caused by Apples stinginess with ram [sic]."

I think that the reason why Android phones have more RAM than on iPhones, is because Android phones have more configurations, using Java, etc. as well as to run everything smoothly, as not all Android phones are quite optimized like iPhones are.

Why iPhones Use Less RAM Than Android Devices.

Why Android needs more RAM than iOS.

M-DISC is the longest lasting archival option. They can last thousands of years with proper storage (and storing them properly isn't all that hard, just keep them away from moisture and excessive sunlight). For simple backup though they're just inconvenient. It's best to have a backup solution that's convenient and an archival solution that will last long for storing the data you don't need frequent access to, like photos and video.
I hadn’t heard of M-DISC but just checked their site. Looks interesting! 🤔

Hopefully 128 is enough. My 11 Pro has 64 and I ran out of room about a year ago. I had to clean up apps, have them offload, and I went through my pics/videos and deleted anything I really don't need.

If the 15's amazing, I may opt for 256 just for longevity.
Hearing that you deleted pictures and videos for space is a kick in the gut. Can you use iCloud at least until you can get an iPhone with more storage?

I fully expected someone to come say these things, no matter what apples pr says, in the real world the iPhone could use more ram. I am right, and you are wrong here, I believe in objective facts, not feelings or opinions.

Ram issues have persisted in the iPhone since I first got a 3G way back in the day, Apple has always held out as long as possible to give us slight ram increases. And every iPhone that had an increase in ram performed noticeably better in virtually every way. A glaring example everyone who has owned all the latest phones knows is the case with the iPhone 6 series. They came with only 1gb of ram which the iPhones had come with for years, and there were endless complaints about it. The phone was sluggish and didn’t multitask well, and when the 6S arrived with double the ram, or 2gigs, it was night and day. The 6S was fast, could handle multitasking, and was future proofed for years. Mine still works well to this day! My 6+ is so slow it’s barely functional, and yes I still have it.

I have seen dozens, if not hundreds of people here on MacRumors complaining about the low ram in the latest iPhones. Safari tabs reloading, camera app closing out other apps, among other issues. I don’t understand what the ADF has against more ram, do you like using a phone that can’t multitask or function like the professional device it’s marketed as? More ram won’t cost you more or harm you in any way. It will future proof the 15 pros, if they stick em with 6gb again the problems will persist.

What about the 3nm A17 chip? Improved cameras? Are those bad too? Should Apple lower the ram to 1gb since “ram doesn’t matter and iOS is so efficient?”.
