This is hard to believe, just yesterday I was doing something important on my phone, had to take a quick snapshot of something, and the app I was working in had to reload and I lost everything. Apple has to be aware that even their “pro” phones are hamstrung by the lack of ram, this may just be a dealbreaker for me.

Adding 8 or 12 Gb of RAM to avoid annoyances and extend the longevity of the phone should be the standard nice behavior. However, coorporations (ultimately the humans behind the coorporation, including shareholders sitting right here on the forum) only have one thing in mind, which is their personal wealth.

This mindset scales on all levels, which is also why the whole planet is doomed soon. But let's forget about that and continue while we can.

Well iPhone sales are actually falling.. so yeah, that happened.
Err no not really. Phone sales in general have dropped due to the state of the world and how everything is more expensive. Drop in sales has nothing to do with what apple are doing more down to the state of cost of living.

Apple sold 225 million iphones in 2022!! just because there is a decline doesn't mean that iphones aren't still selling in massive numbers.

I've never felt RAM constraints on my 13 Pro with 6GB but I'm also the type of user who keeps no more than 10 safari tabs open at a time. Would never complain about more RAM but also not complaining about 6GB of RAM. Happy with the proposed improvements to the A17.

LOL. Decline is decline my friend. And yes, less people will buy new iPhones in the coming years, mainly because of the lack of compelling reasons to upgrade.

You are really clutching at straws here. As I said they just sold 222 million iPhone in the past year. IPhone sales being in decline has nothing to do with lack of reasons to upgrade and all to do with increases prices on everything across the board. People often have no choice when it comes to upgrading even if the improvements are great year on year there are more important things people need to buy.

There’s no need to attack me and you can have the last word. It’s cool. Have a wonderful day.

Wasn't attacking you at all, I simply stated the decline in smartphone sales are all down to the same reason and not what apple or others are doing wrong. Smartphones these days have got to the point where they all do similar things and it's not worth most people time's to swap phones just because of a better camera.

I was hoping for that bump to 8 rumored :/

Well I hope this isn't true. Their rare RAM upgrades are much more felt than the year to year chip upgrades imo. You may not think it does, but everything just reloads less.

I don't get it. I multi task everyday on my iPhone. I literally run my business from it. I've been using an iPhone since 4S. I've yet to have any RAM issues. I'm sure if this was a problem to me I would've left iPhone but I haven't. Not going to either. I'm sure some of us has a neighbor with a 600hp sports car that drives it at speed limit. Bet he is happy too.

If they do eight then people will cry why does an iPhone have as much RAM as a base Macbook
considering RAM prices are in the utter tank due to a global glut of them... There is no reason a macbook should have 8Gb of ram anymore. 16-32 should be the min and cost the company maybe 30$ at best.

32gb full size high performance kits are going for 70$ or so and we know apple can get them utterly cheaper.

Current memory prices and storage prices are tanked and keep tanking due to very very high supply and little demand.

You're one of the few who don't need real time multi-tasking then. Seeing apps crash, or be unable to be suspended due to RAM constraints going into 2024 is unacceptable, and it's a very common problem I deal with daily.

How many apps are you running? 1,256 ? I run many apps. Messages. Emails. Calls. WhatsApp. Many apps. Personal and work. Running smooth and fine.

It’s a widespread issue people have reported, if you have a lot of apps open at once and are taxing the phone and use the camera it usually will close other apps and it’s unacceptable in a “pro” device. Other, much cheaper phones have in some cases double the ram. This has been a pet peeve of mine since the iPhone first came out, always short on ram. Every year they upgrade the chip and it seems to be unnoticeable, but every year that they’ve upped the ram, people have noticed immediate and large improvements in how the phone performs. I think everyone can remember how sluggish the iPhone 6 was as it carried on with only 1gb of ram. When the 6S came out with 2gb it felt like lightning compared to the 6, I still have my 6S and it still works well to this day because it has enough ram for what it is.

I’m not spending another 1500 bucks on a phone that can’t even do the most basic tasks without apps crashing and stuttering. That’s unacceptable to me, I’ll buy a pixel In a heartbeat if Apple doesn’t want my money.

Hoping iPhone 15 Pro Max will be carrying 8GB RAM. Maybe Apple is saving that for next year for iPhone Ultra.

I need more RAM to handle 500+ Safari Tabs.
It doesn't save the tabs in RAM or even push them into swap. They're killed and replaced with a preview screenshot after a while. The 500 limit is arbitrary.

The camera app kills anything else major running in the background if I open it. This used to annoy me constantly with Pokemon GO but I gave up on playing it due to how frustrating it got to use. iPhone 13 Pro with 6GB of RAM.

This is where the competition is eating Apples lunch, people always say Android “needs” more ram! Ok, and all these other companies give you more ram, the iPhone clearly needs more, yet they don’t give it to you, and there’s no option to even pay more for it. It’s pretty baffling, all the Apple executives must have the same problems we all do. Tim is doing an important task on his phone while at the Taj Mahal, he snaps a quick pic, goes back to the important task only to find that the app has to reload and everything he wrote is lost and he has to do it over again. Yet he doesn’t order the new phones to have more ram? W T H!

The speculation about the higher storage capacities possibly having 8GB seems like a fair trade to me. Some Android phones do this as well. It probably won't convince me though, I can't imagine needing 1TB on an iPhone. My entire photo library is only barely over 100GB (and I just use the optimize setting since I have internet everywhere...) and I have nothing else that takes up that much space. MAYBE for an iPad... But not an iPhone.... yet, at least.

The one thing here about Android v iOS is Apple is the only one making iPhones, so the RAM arms race can't seep into 3rd party apps in the same way it can in Android. Every iPhone has 6GB of RAM or less, the developers are forced to adapt to this. On Android they can just target devices with 10+GB of RAM only.

I learnt to code on a 16kb of RAM and people are complaining their phone will only have 6Gb. 😂😂😂😂

Still it means the waiting list for my 15PM will be smaller

I..I..just... I don't understand people who do this.

Same, I only sold the XS because the Intel modem was missing/dropping calls. The XS was fast enough, lasted two days on a charge after 3 years, wireless charging daily didn't destroy the battery despite the rumors thereof, and had a nice size/shape.

My 13 is a brick, I regret I didn't get the 13 mini and I'm worried even the base models are only growing bigger.
I only upgraded because T-Mobile had some crazy deal where it only cost me like $200 to upgrade. And even that was spread out over 2 years. 😄

I don't think you've used a Samsung phone. They're fantastic
I do use several Samsungs (and am an Android as well as an iOS dev)... Samsung is a hot mess of in your face bloat. When interviewing designers I specifically ask for their take on user experience Apple vs. Android... if they say Android (or neglect to go into ecosystem thinking and integration) it's an immediate hard pass.
