iPhone 15 Pro's Thinner Bezels and Manufacturing Issue: What to Know

H
Amen. Precisely why I am meh about the 15 Pro line. Keeping my 14 ProMax it is fast enough, wonderful camera, great screeen, videos, sound. What you are saying is all this is plateaued mostly and thats correct. Heck I get tired of having to buy a new case each year rather than keep the one I have and like.

Now the 16 ProMax Camera rumors only if true might start to be a bit more than camera tweaks we are supposed to be seeing in the 15 Pro Line and may get me to then upgrade my 14 ProMax. It sounds (if true) that the 16 Pro cameras might be a big jump in telephoto capabilities that start to finally rival a bit of what I do with my DSLR and telephoto lens.
Haven't other manufacturers thrown 1 inch sensors in their phones. Where's our iphone with variable aperture and 10x+ telescope camera.

Apple's upcoming iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are rumored to feature thinner bezels around the display compared to the current models, but this change has reportedly led to a manufacturing issue ahead of the devices launching.

Below, we recap what has been reported about the manufacturing issue and what impact it might have on the iPhone 15 Pro launch later this year.

Thinner Bezels

Multiple leakers have shared images and videos of alleged front glass panels for the iPhone 15 Pro models, and these panels appear to have considerably thinner bezels around the display compared to iPhone 14 Pro models. The bezels are expected to have a slightly curved design, and the Pro Max model could have the thinnest bezels on any smartphone ever.

YouTube channel Unbox Therapy provided a side-by-side comparison of the bezels on an unofficial iPhone 15 Pro Max dummy model and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

While most rumors have claimed only the Pro models will have a bezel reduction this year, a previously-accurate leaker known as Ice Universe shared an image showing that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus might have slightly thinner bezels as well.

Manufacturing Issue

Last week, The Information's Wayne Ma reported that Apple suppliers were facing challenges assembling iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max displays with thinner bezels, and he said the issue could lead to a supply shortage when the devices launch in September. He said the issue was more pronounced with the Pro Max model.

Bloomberg's Debby Wu and Takashi Mochizuki subsequently reported there was a "minor hiccup" with the displays, but said the issue should be fixed "within a week or two" and "will not have a noticeable impact on overall production."

Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young said iPhone 15 Pro display shipments are now "ramping" as the technical issues are overcome, further increasing the likelihood that Apple will not delay the launch of the iPhone 15 Pro models. At worst, it seems that shipping estimates on launch day may slip quicker than they would have otherwise.

Other Features

Beyond thinner bezels, the iPhone 15 Pro models are rumored to feature a USB-C port, titanium frame, customizable Action button, faster A17 Bionic chip, camera improvements, Wi-Fi 6E support, increased RAM, an upgraded Ultra Wideband chip, and more. These new features coupled with inflationary pressures may lead to price increases for the devices.

Ah finally thinner bezels. Another feature I won‘t use because phones still need a case in order not to break.

The reason I wont upgrade from my 14 Pro is I wont notice the difference that much. I dont buy a £1000+ phone on looks and its such a small update even with USB C that the money is better saved or spent on something I do need like a new computer. As to thin Bezels, since when did that become a must have, its easier enough on the 14 Pro to hit the screen as it is and set all your apps doing the Apple jive.

I have 13 Pro 512Gb from launch date in Thailand, all I’ll do is get a new battery as it’s now on 81%, the phones are so good now, cameras are very good and it’s a great phone still, really since the iPhone X they have been great, I’d be happy to keep my 13 Pro for years.

I'm going to upgrade because I have the 12 pro, but it definitely looks like an "S" type of update. This would be a perfect opportunity to increase the thickness to significantly increase battery life. They can make it 20% thicker, but it won't feel like it because titanium is so much lighter than steel.
Plus with the camera bump sticking out of the back of the main body, and then the lenses themselves sticking even further out of the back of the camera bump, it's the end of those lenses that is what tends to sometimes get caught on the side of my pocket when I put my caseless phone into my (always otherwise empty to avoid scratches) trouser pocket so increasing the thickness of the main body wouldn't actually alter the overall effective thickness for me, it would just make the total camera/lens projection at the back less prominent, so that would be a win-win for me. I would absolutely love it if Apple did do as you suggest.

Your classifying this year's Pro, if rumours are true, as an "S" type of upgrade is interesting though. I was about to argue against that but stopped myself when I saw you specifically mention the Pro. This year if the periscope lens rumours for the Pro Max are true then we almost have 2 different types of upgrades for the Pro line. I would agree that the non-Max Pro does look very much like an "S" upgrade but for people who care about the zoom capabilities the addition of a periscope lens with at least 6x optical zoom in the Pro Max would, in my view, be a significant enough new feature to have me arguing against classifying specifically the Pro Max as just an "S" upgrade.

Unless rumours turn out to be untrue, or Apple has taken a big backwards step on battery life in order to make room for the periscope lens, then the 15 Pro Max will be a launch day purchase for me.

Same manufacturing/supply issue rumor every year soo.. whatever..

Though to be honest, I don’t really see the point of ultra thin bezels. The bezels are already thin enough in my opinion. Making them thinner will only lead to more accidental touches, making holding the phone with one hand even more difficult. And if you’ll be using a case, there’s basically no point at all.
I’d rather just have an under-display notch/dynamic island than ultra thin bezels :)

already the 14 felt like an "S" type update :-(

The thinner bezels looks nice, but I'm still not paying $1000+ for a phone.
Can you just imagine Tim on the floor be like: And we were able to meet or exceed our technical goals, we have met our cost goals. And I am thrilled to announce to you that the iPhone 15 pro pricing starts not at 999 but 499!

I can’t but it would be nice lol, I think I’ll be skipping a new iPhone again this year.

Thats what I did this year upgraded my old gen 3 iPad Pro 1TB 12.9 for a new gen 6 M2 ipad pro 12.9 2TB and my 5 year old 15 inch MacBook Pro for the 16 inch M2 Pro MacBook Pro. My 14 ProMax is plenty and it was time to upgrade my apple fleet

Probably have but I am strictly an apple user with a full apple ecosystem in house for me and my wife. Just never wanted to try to mix and match different platforms. I see the 15 ProMax telephoto upgrade as just a start and the rumored 16 Pro will have some significant differences (if true) that I may upgrade then.

Never thought of the bezels on my Mini! Had to look, is there any?
Yep, some thin ones, how can I forget that now? What a horror!

Maybe because the phone is Midnight/Blackish and I have blackish background pics on the phone.
But sure enough there's a bezel, but never thought of it before, ever.

How is this even an issue, question or whatever? 😂

bezels Have gotten so thin that just holding the device often interferes with use through unintended, inadvertent interaction with the touch screen. It looks appealing until you start interacting with it. Then it becomes a pain in the ass.
