It’s more pathetic that their desktop computers only only have 256. That’s barely enough to run the computer let alone store stuff. The phone i can deal with cus most data is kept in the cloud
In our office the MBPs all have 256GB SSDs and it holds plenty. I’ve got Office, Xcode, Slack, Teams, several graphic apps, likely a bunch of other apps I’ve forgotten right now, multiple browsers, and a bunch of files and still have around 100GB free. Of course if you have photos, videos, and music libraries 256GB goes quickly. It depends on the use case.

Except the "pro" macs also start at 8gb. For the Air, it makes sense since that's a consumer oriented machine and is priced accordingly.

Anyways just making an observation comparing what apple charged for their intel macs running the same RAM sticks found in some computer shop (to keep things fair). The whole thing is irrelevant to me personally due to a lack of windows support among others.
The 14/16” MBPs start at 16GB RAM. It is true that the 13” MBP starts at 8GB but it’s really just a MBA in drag.

Will I be able to run Parallels on this?
😄 I’ve used Jump Desktop in the past. Save my butt working on some servers!

A working Siri and better battery please + BASIC dial pad that allows to edit a mistyped number, c’mmon!!!!. Does anyone uses the phone app at Apple, AT ALL???!!!
There’s a back space button right next to the green dial button. What more do you need?

This RAM rampup feels pretty quick for Apple's standard. We only had 2 Pro phones with 6GB RAM (13 Pro and 14 Pro). And now we are at 8? It worries me that Apple might start dropping models from support quicker based on RAM amount. It almost seems like iOS17 will drop anything with less than 4GB of RAM.

It must be embarrassing for Apple to have half the RAM size of Samsung top level phones. Not sure they should bother though: Gen Z folks don't know what RAM is anyways.

Maybe this bump is to support 8k recording?
I don’t think Apple will have 8k recording as they would want it available on all lenses if they were to put the 8k recording feature. I have a feeling it’s additional RAM for either a 4th lens or an extra buffer for the periscope zooming.

Soon the iPhone will come with more RAM than Macs.

I don't even remember the last time Macs recieved a RAM increase on the base configuration.
If true it would match the basic RAM configuration for most current Macs, truly mind boggling.

For those complaining of battery at Iphone 14.. turn of the ALWAYS ON screen.. it drainsssss.
This thread is full of whiners wishing for things my Samsung Galaxy note 9 can do. Multitasking, more ram, more storage space, SD card slot, usb c, stylus support, always on display.

My first computer, a TRS-80, had 4K of memory. I mowed lawns to later expand it to a whopping 48k. I wrote programs back then that wouldn’t fit in 4K of memory.
I've not heard of the TRS-80, but looking at images of it just now it's got a sort of retro-futuristic vibe. Looks neat with that 'Space Grey' & black finish.

I don't know about you, but computers/upgrades bought by saving up pocket money/Saturday job wages and the like always had a bit more attached to them, you'd really earned them!

Hopefully this means more RAM for the base spec Air. You can't be selling a laptop with the same amount of RAM as your phone. I know it's a "Pro" phone, but it's still a phone running iOS.

Must be embarrassing to require twice the RAM to have the phone function.

I admire that. We had them in school and I had a VIC 20 and Commodore 64. Never had the patience to write anything large like that.

Well, yeah.... lol.

I haven't noticed my 12 Pro Max slowing down any but I'll always welcome more RAM.

Not quite sure yet if I'll bother upgrading to the 15 Pro Max/Ultra. My 12 PM hasn't given me any reason to get rid of yet.

14 Pro Max has an incredible new camera system, massive performance gains, platform security improvements, and of course that magical Dynamic Island.

15 Pro Max will take everything to another level.

You should absolutely upgrade and must.

My first was some TI one with 64K and I would run our sometimes coding BASIC. Had to be super efficient. Not sloppy like today with massive amounts of RAM and storage and swapping.

It doesn’t, but it’s weird how defensive you are of Apple still offering the same base RAM after 9 years. 8GB is nice, until you go to edit only TWO 4K HEVC camera angles in Final Cut or iMovie and the system falls to its knees. Editing on iPhone would be fine, but apps usually lack manual zoom (ie ken burns) for video. It’s hardly pathological to want your Mac with all its extra tools to be able to handle the workload of your similar priced $999+ phone.
No, what's weird is that when I point out a fact of reality (
- doesn't affect your life
- you are not well placed to decide things for other people)
this is interpreted as "defensive" of Apple...

It has nothing to do with Apple, it has to do with people's views of themselves and their relationship to others. That's kinda my point -- people are so delusional about their place in the world that they cannot even *comprehend* an argument that starts with "you are not the hero of anyone else's movie".

Ah those were the days. I made every mistake of programming back then. But later in life I understand why the best practices really were best.
Can't quite remember how it worked in BASIC. I think I just tried to run it and got errors or something just wouldn't work how I wanted. I know with FORTRAN in college you had keep compiling and debugging until it was successful/
