For the same price the 15 is still better than the 14. Dynamic Island, usb-c and 14 Pro chip. I think there’s other upgrades as well.

It takes courage to throttle down the speed
Here comes the lawsuit from EU for intentionally capping the USBC port… they gave the warning pretty clear “no capping or else…”. Apple has some shady business practices
Instead of rushing to assign blame, maybe dig a little deeper. They're not "throttling it down" or "intentionally capping" - the USB circuitry is on the A16 chip, the same chip they were using last year in the iPhone 14 Pro. It is designed to run at USB2 speeds (because that's all that Lightning needed).

The iPhone 15 Pro uses the A17. The A17 has more capable USB circuitry on it, that can do the higher speeds. Next year, in all likelihood, the iPhone 16 will get the A17 (and faster speeds) and the iPhone 16 Pro will have moved onto an A18 chip.

Its because they were forced to adapt USB C to the iPhone. Sure its a feature for most of us but for apple to hype it up as a major feature would be embarrassing for them.
Agreed. It does seem to me like they are trying to gloss past it and not discuss it any more than is absolutely necessary. Probably were a lot of meetings just to figure out exactly how much or how little they were going to hype this up.

They didn’t announce this, but the iPhone 15 Pros can now charge apple watch and airpods.

They did announce this.

It might have been when they were discussing the non-Pro 15, though. My memory isn't good enough to remember if it was in the 15 section or the 15pro section.

[edit: Found it. See attached image.]

They kind of hinted why this is case during the A17 chip presentation. They had to give A17 a new USB controller to allow for faster transfer speed. Seems like the A16 was never designed to work with anything faster then the lightning connector speeds. Since they wanted to re-use the A16 Bionic for iPhone 15 they either could go with an extra onboard controller for USB or keep the slow speed. They chose the latter.
Of course, they could have used an A17 in the 15 and the A17 Pro in the 15 Pro and *both* could have supported transfer speeds faster than PCs had 20 years ago?

I suppose this approach requires more..

Courage.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

As a 14 Pro Max owner this iPhone is a hard pass for me. During previous years there was always something that baited me to buy the latest and greatest. This year there is nothing - not even better battery life.
On the other hand, those of us with older iPhones, such as my 12 Pro, the upgrades are compelling enough. Looking forward to the 15 Pro MAX in any of the available colors.

They did announce this during the standard iPhone 15’s presentation. It gets mentioned in MR‘s live blog at 10:51 am: „Can charge AirPods or Apple Watch from the iPhone. New USB C wired earpods.“

I legitimately can not remember the last time I used my iPhone to transfer data to or from a computer using a Lightning cord. Who cares.

The big deal is that I can charge my MacBook, iPad, and now iPhone without having to carry around multiple cords.
You're going to require multiple cords anyway if you want to charge more than one device at a time.

Convenience is king and I think most people either never backup or they use iCloud. I am one of the 12 who still does back up to my laptop over lightning (XS to 2012 MBP 😊). Why pay money to save myself 10 minutes a month.
Yes, I back up mine maybe every couple of weeks or before an iOS update. I really don't think I need to though. I pay a little extra for Apple Music and iCloud so everything should be backed up there. I just do it for redundancy.

Yeah I’m not really a fan of USB-C. Definitely don’t consider it a selling point or something to celebrate like some people are. So I got a laugh out of this one 😂
I honestly like the L PORT better, just wish they would have even upped its speed on iPhones

I get reusing parts from a prior generation and all, but USB 3.0/3.1 speeds should have been the norm for a long time.
At this point the 16 has no excuse.

Or, they could just let us do everything over Wi-Fi that we might do via a cable, specifically supporting image capture/Apple Photos for local syncing.

Same here, 12P to 15PM. I’m thinking titanium black but I don’t know yet hopefully there’s hands on videos before the 15th

I wasn't going to upgrade this year anyway. But USB 2.0 in 2023/24 is just hilarious for a "premium" product. And yes, I do transfer data using a cable regularly, because Wifi Sync and Airdrop are terribly buggy for larger transfers.

🤣 That is a bummer! It is more like the iPhone 14.5, not 15.
iPhone 15 is what the iPhone 14 should’ve been from the beginning.

Apple’s lucky that I’m coming off from Samsung Galaxy S8, because the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be a big upgrade for me regardless, but yikes!

Yeah, that could be the case.

Ha! I knew it!

Tim Cook is such a piece of 💩. Because I realize that, I suspected the iPhone 15 would have USB 2.0 a long time ago. See the thread below for specifics:

This is obscene. Apple may want to stick it to the EU but it is assaulting its own customers. The 15 and 15 Plus should have at least USB 3. If they want to differentiate between them and the Pros, then give the top models Thunderbolt speeds. But that wouldn't be like Apple, the world's most arrogant and cynical company. Not only am I going to wait on a purchase, I'm going to seriously consider leaving the ecosystem.

You will seriously consider it … then stay right where you are.

You'd have to be foolish to think Apple would allow Thunderbolt on the iPhone. The added complexity into the phone and exposure to hackers is not worth the headache.

… and a higher price.
