Money is why. They profit off of selling new models each year. What would probably make more sense is if they went back to selling “S” models every other year.
What’s the big deal about yearly upgrades? No one is stopping you from only evaluating an Iphone every other year. BTW, Apple has been updating their M-series of MacBook pros every year now. Apple has a whole team of developers that are employed so they need to be working on the next generation. Every other year is a long time between releases since technology moves fast.

lol, the phones getting even bigger. Keeping my 13 mini until it no longer functions I guess, can't see them coming to their senses any time soon unfortunately.
I think the only possible light at the tunnel is the rumored iPhone "Slim" or "Air" that seems to be on the table.

Probably won't feature a smaller than 6.1" display. But it should be the slimmest and lightest 6.1" iPhone ever made.

But no leaks or talks of anything small or "mini" since 13 mini, and numerous statistics on 12 mini and 13 mini's bad sales figures, means that the <6.1" iPhone is dead.

I'll be upgrading from a 13 Pro this year. There's no one feature that has prompted me to do so, but in combination, I think the new features of the 16 provide a decent upgrade for those with the 13 or older. I'm looking forward to the premium feel of the titanium finish (as opposed to the fingerprint magnet stainless steel I have now), but I'm a bit underwhelmed by the gray "colorways".

Here's a first look at the upcoming iPhone 100:

I'd wait for the slim models next year, they are going to make these ones look like chunky little basterds in comparison.

14 Pro user got it the yr it came out.
Will absolutely get the 16 Pro Max this fall.
Always wait 2 yrs ohhh can’t WAIT
Same here. I will get the 16 Pro Max, wipe my 14 Pro Max and give it to my son who is running a 12 Pro. I'll take that old 12 Pro, wipe it, and put it in a drawer to be used in case one of our phones dies or gets lost.

I wonder why Apple doesn’t just release a new iPhone every 2 years. I can’t think of another Apple product on a yearly upgrade timetable. At this point I’m sure the vast majority of users will keep their phones for a min. of 2 years. The yearly release has become meaningless and engenders disappointment.
When people upgrade, they want to upgrade to a phone released that year.

Most exciting thing here is the 40w fast charging. And honestly I wish they would go a bit higher powered than that.

Even with however close it gets to that already with a 40w charger, it still takes over an hour just to get from 80% to 100% - and I have the “charge slowly after 80%” setting turned off.
They have to charge it slowly to avoid overheating and whatnot. Those batteries are dangerous to handle.

Ok so I seem to get a good enough package in one month time. By the time I return to Australia I might be able to get the latest with only $99 to pay.

Nothing wrong with yearly updates. Just because you don’t doesn’t mean others don’t and also everyone upgrades different time and not everyone on same generation. If someone on iPhone 12 wants 16 and someone on iPhone 13 wants 17 etc. Yearly updates works for that. There always someone need update.

I had to switch from the 15 Pro to the 14 Pro because the quality of the 48 MP ProRAW high-resolution images of the 14 Pro was not matched. I will only upgrade if there is a significant improvement in the main camera. There is very little information on this.

Follow the money. You'll figure it out.

If they bring swap file support to the iPhone like they now have on the iPad, and I can turn off Apple Intelligence and actually use all 8GB of that RAM, that'll be an upgrade buy from me.

If I can finally treat it like a Mac and leave an app there and come back to it exactly as it was, no unnecessary reloading from switching one app away, I will be very happy.

Apple typically releases its new iPhone series in the fall, and a possible September 10 announcement date has been floated this year, which means we are just one month away from the launch of the iPhone 16. Like the iPhone 15 series, this year's lineup is expected to stick with four models – iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max – although there are plenty of design differences and new features to take into account.

To bring you up to speed, we've summarized below the biggest iPhone 16 rumors we've covered so far here on MacRumors. For more details, follow the links, or dive into our dedicated roundups for both iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models.

1. Larger Displays
Biggest Ever iPhones
This year's iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are rumored to be getting bigger display sizes, increasing to 6.27- and 6.86-inches, respectively. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively. The new display sizes would be the largest ever for the iPhone.

2. Vertical Camera Layout
iPhone 16 & iPhone 16 Plus
Apple's iPhone 16 base models will feature a vertical camera arrangement with a pill-shaped raised surface, instead of a diagonal camera arrangement like the iPhone 15. The new camera bump features two separate camera rings for the Wide and Ultra Wide cameras. The vertical camera layout is expected to enable Spatial Video recording, which is currently limited to the iPhone 15 Pro models.

3. Battery Changes
All iPhone 16 Models
Rumors suggest the ‌iPhone 16‌ and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature larger batteries than their predecessors, although the smaller iPhone 16 Pro device could see the biggest improvement, while the ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus may have reduced capacity. The iPhone 16 is said to have a 6% increase over the iPhone 15, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max gaining a 5% increase, and the iPhone 16 Pro seeing a 9% increase. In contrast, the iPhone 16 Plus is rumored to have a 9% reduction in capacity. On the other hand, Apple could also potentially use stacked battery technology to increase energy density and prolong lifespan across the lineup.

4. Capture Button
New Camera Capabilities
All iPhone 16 models will have a new "Capture Button" dedicated to triggering image or video capture. The button will add features like the ability to zoom in and out by swiping left and right on the button, focus on a subject with a light press, and activate a recording with a more forceful press. The Capture Button will be located on the bottom right side of the ‌iPhone 16, and will take the place of the mmWave antenna on U.S. ‌iPhone‌ models, with the antenna relocating to the left side of the device below the volume and Action buttons.

5. Ultra Wide Lens Upgrade
iPhone 16 Pro & iPhone 16 Pro Max
The iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to feature an upgraded 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera lens, which should allow it to capture more light, resulting in improved photos when shooting in 0.5× mode, especially in low-light environments. This also means that iPhone 16 Pro models should be able to shoot 48-megapixel ProRAW photos in Ultra Wide mode. These photos retain more detail in the image file for more editing flexibility, and can be printed at large sizes. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is also rumored to boast a bigger main camera thanks to an advanced custom 48-megapixel Sony IMX903 sensor.

6. Super Telephoto Camera
iPhone 16 Pro Max
The iPhone 16 Pro Max could be the first to feature a super telephoto periscope camera for dramatically increased optical zoom. "Super" or "ultra" telephoto usually describes cameras with a focal length of over 300mm. The current telephoto lens is equivalent to a 77mm lens, so if accurate, there could be a notable increase in zoom capabilities. Super telephoto cameras are often used for sports and wild animal photography, but the extremely soft backgrounds they create also make them useful for portrait photography, providing there is enough distance between the subject and the photographer.

7. Faster Wi-Fi Support

77mm lens is much more useful than 300mm lens. I hope they add a new lens instead of replacing the more useful one.

Sure, Apple lacks product innovation… but with Ol’Tim, the NEW innovation is $20-50/mo subscription services, over-priced RAM updates, over-priced AppleCare+ pushes, over-crowded Apple Stores but nobody to assist for 15+ minutes, OS lockdowns, and more!

🍎
The over-crowded Apple Stores would seem to indicate that the over-pricing is not a problem for consumers in general.

I miss the golden days of Apple when innovation was their heartbeat and every product felt like a glimpse into the future.
Apple is what Android used to be 15 years ago.
New phone every 3-6 months with the only change being a faster processor or higher MP camera.

Every iPhone has the exact same "new" features.
"BIGGETS iPhone ever."
"New multi dimensional, extraterrestrial fancy words included camera lens for extra zoom with a microscopic inner lens" BS
"New button that will do what the previous button did but its called new now."

My main doubt is between the regular iPhone and the Pro. I wonder if both of them will be powered by an A18 SoC, and 8GB of RAM, or there will be differences between the A18 and the A18 Pro…

I will be upgrading from my 6 year old iPhone XR, and I’m excited! Do you find that acceptable?
That’s totally unacceptable, you should upgrade your phone on a yearly basis! /s

Some people here are just, clueless? Apple sells around 200M iPhones every year, there are what, around 1B iPhones in use, so do your own math on how many upgrades are happening…
Smartphones have long plateau’d, only so much you can improve and they continue to be slabs ( and foldable also become slabs when unfolded), new models are for some enthusiasts who like the latest and for most others who have 3-5 or whatever old phones

Further... I wouldn't call it over-pricing. Based on the number of sales and Apple Store customer density, I would call it right-pricing.
