I have no idea how folks do the hand gymnastics on devices with "no bezel"
Apple, for many years, has had software solutions that detect whether you're holding onto the side of the device or actually pressing on it for exactly this reason. I've never had issues with this on an Apple device.

Same, I remember being quite impressed when holding it in a shop. Was so far ahead of the competition. Quite surprised that they killed it and that people didn't like it.

Those curved edges were horrible, I remember living through those dark times. Display was distorted at the edges and the hardware bezels were still there just pushed out beyond the curve, but still quite visible, you actually lost screen real estate to the curved part. False touches were worse because you didn't have a straight edge to contact your hand. I applaud Sammie for trying something different, but that was a plate of spaghetti which thankfully didn't stick to the wall. (Disclosure: Samsung fanboy here).

"Squirrel!" moment. Besides distracting you from them increasingly making the device a phablet, there's the hope at Apple that you'll be also distracted from how substandard iOS remains - and why are they trying to replicate it on MacOS?

Because a case still has to "grab" your phone and hold on to the edges. At some point, your case will cover your screen instead of bezel.

Yes, but the edge of the phone is not the same as the screen.

The case currently grabs the phone by the edges without covering the screen.

So, it wouldn't change except there wouldn't be a black border.

Fine bezels may be nice, and may have a better look but as far as I know, the most important thing in a iPhone is the screen and its contents...
It seems that somehow Apple is focused this year on "size reduction" (iPad Pro with reduced thickness and now iPhone on 16 pro with bezels), but is really a big step forward ?

Apple's new generation device checklist -- "New chip"? Check. "Thinner"? Check. "Compromised something in performance to save Apple a few dollars knowing people won't notice or care"? Check. "They'll love it!". Check. "They'll buy it regardless". Check.

I don't see how this makes the device better in any meaningful way. It it "cool"? I guess.

But it reminds me of Jonathan Ive's obsession wiht making every device 0.5mm thinner all the while removing useful features and better battery life.

Nobody is going to choose the phone because the bezel is 0.1mm smaller than the competition.

Oh boy! Even thinner bezels! A real game changer!

These silly comments from people that really can’t see how good making the screen bigger without making the phone larger, is for consuming content.

What else do you want from a phone? They’ve reached maturity long ago and very little left to improve them that comes organically every year, like battery life and camera improvements.

I suppose they could try for a 144hz screen and better speakers? That wouldn’t make as much of a difference as bezel size.

What's silly is thinking .7mm more screen space is going to allow you to consume more content!! (and that was from iPhone 15 spec). How much thinner are the bezels on the 16 going to be? Come on...really?

Only Apple can do this because they control the full hardware and software stack.
Same form factor as the iPhone 15, 14, 13, 12. What’s new is upgraded screens (not developed in house and widely available for competitors), upgraded cameras (not developed in house and widely available for competitors), WiFi 7 (not developed in house and widely available for competitors), … and a lot of marketing blah blah and the famous “you’ll only see this from Apple” and probably a price increase because it’s so “special”.

Can they just move the island into the bezel (back into a notch) until they can figure out the true underscreen cameras?! An island just wastes screen real estate with that sliver of screen at the top that’s completely useless. Horrible design change.

Apple's upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models will have the thinnest bezels of any smartphone, beating the screen border thinness of even its latest iPhone 15 Pro devices.

Some of us actually prefer larger bezels:

Does ANYone REALLY care if a new phone's bezel is one micro-pubic-hair smaller than before?????
I can tell you that, other than techies and fanboys, no one gives a whit. In fact, I have no fewer than three friends who were all long-time iPhone owners who switched to Android this year. I asked them why and they all said the iPhones just don’t seem to change in a meaningful way year to year… while costing more than ever. Their words, not mine.

Why is Apple’s only record breaking tied to the thinness of products, rather than user experience and quality?

See the lower audio quality of the new iPad Pro. Thinnest device ever, but a drop in audio quality and output as a cost.

Apple needs new leadership.

Good to know! Should help to keep overall dimensions similar to 15 Pro Max despite the small increase in screen size
