I upgrade every 24 months; the differences between the 14 and the 16 are enough to make it worthwhile, and the apple trade-in value hits the sweet spot for taking some of the sting out of a new purchase. I can afford to upgrade every year, but don’t have
good enough reasons to do so.

Well yeah. Plenty of people know that there is no point in "upgrading" every year. I bought my 13 Pro Max two years ago in August just before the 14 came out. I'll keep using it for another year or two. This year, it was the year to upgrade my Android from the Note 10+ to the S24 Ultra.

It’s a solid tock release. Some of the major updates like better microphones and thermals aren’t sexy and won’t move units, but will pay dividends down the line.

FWIW I’m watching close to see why Apple included the capture button on the base models. Not doing that would increase margins for those phones and probably increase ASP’s as many would go to the pro for that feature. I think there’s a longer game here. It does nudge users to take more landscape photos and videos, but I’m not sure what Apple’s payoff would be with that 🤔
I think the reason for the capture button to be in all models is for developers to include features in their apps using it, like Snapchat. If they keep it for some models it could happen like the touch bar which faced issues as not every developer added something to it.

For me, the key enhancements for going from the 13 series to a 16 Pro are: having 5x telephoto, satellite communication, better battery life, USB-C, and to my surprise, the video Audio Mix feature. The Audio Mix features are something I desperately need and could never have guessed were on the horizon in an iPhone. This will be the first Pro model I've purchased.

Jokes on you. Scalpers already buying up the disc drives right now in preparation.
As someone who still has bad memories trying for three months after release to cop a PS5 digital, I truly hope the joke’s on them this time. All of the early morning drops that led to nothing, queuing on PS Direct with multiple windows open on my laptop in addition to my iPad mini 4 and iPhone X, the infamous Kohls drop, reading scalpers boasting that they copped their tenth PS5 on various forums, etc. It was PS Direct and X/Twitter that finally ended my misery in February 2021. Those three months did teach me a very valuable lesson. I can wait next time!!! Hopefully there’s no pandemic next time so the difficulties don’t stretch for a year or more.

Apple will make 33 billion dollars instead of 34 billion dollars, I’m shaking and crying rn
So, taking your number at face value and ignoring completely the considerable margin loss involved with selling fewer Pros, 12% of 34 billion is 4.08 billion.

I imagine their shareholders might be a little upset.

And people like me, living in EU, will not get Apple Intelligence at all. We pay the highest prices in the world for Apple products but get the worst software. I highly recommend not to buy an iPhone/iPad/MacBook, if you live in the EU.

They all look the same to me - so I've just bought myself a large purple one from Apple colour pallet No. 14... 😁

Saved myself a few pennies too!

Years ago, when you buy a phone from carrier, you got it a lot cheaper than you purchase it from a shop. And the contract was 12 months to pay off. When phones started getting pricier, it has increased to 24 months. With iPhone 12, carriers in Sweden added 36 months contract to bring monthly costs down for customers. This year they have even 48 months contract. In most countries, guarantee for an iPhone is 12-24 months. So, in a couple of years, there is a risk that people will be carrying around a phone which is not fully paid off, and no guarantee. As you said, iPhones are too expensive in Europe and many are going for alternatives. In Europe, phone is not a status symbol like in some Asian countries.
Prices in Europe are to high. Simple as that. People are looking at older or cheaper models.

I hear you. I’m not stressing this time and can wait. Although, I did manage to secure two for launch day PS5 disc versions for me and my sister. One at Best Buy and the other at Walmart. Could have sold them for big money but unlike scalping *******s, we actually wanted them. Both are still going strong to this day! I’m the one upgrading to the Pro but not her. Still happy with the PS5 and just not interested in the Pro. I can’t blame her.

Making assumptions on how well things sold based on store availability is crazy at best. No one has any idea how well stocked up Apple is, how they divided their initial stock geographically, etc. Previous years are no indication of how well or bad a phone does based on availability dates, because we have no idea how many phones Apple has ready for release day / following weeks. And while Kuo might get an indication on the overall amount of orders from the supply chain, what he cannot predict is how Apple will make those devices, all for September, or a slower pace during the rest of the year.

Having better availability this year might mean that demand in lower, if Apple made the same amount of devices. Or it might mean they were better prepared. It might be a combination of these factors. Basically, looking at store availability tells us one thing only: is it available or when will it be available. It doesn't tell us how popular or not this release will be.

I think the 16 (Pro) is a good update for people on older iPhones. It does not make sense for 15 or 14 owners. But this is no different than in the previous few years, so nothing new here.

I don't think Apple Intelligence is such a big thing that it would drive upgrades or lack of upgrades. The average user just simply does not care. The average user might care, when their friends or family or IT person shows them what great things can be accomplished with Apple Intelligence. Until we are at that point, they don't care.

I'm still rockin' my 13 Pro Max and see no reason to upgrade, my 13 does everything I need it to do and it does it well, why would I want to spend money unnecessarily? Apple Intelligence does look intriguing, but not "give Apple over £1000 intriguing". I will probably wait for the service to mature and iron out its bugs and upgrade to a 17 Pro Max next year.

Creates more spatial video for AVP? One of my guesses other than it being a hidden Touch ID (long shot)
