Apple began transitioning to USB-C instead of Lightning with the launch of the iPhone 15 lineup, and USB-C is also used for charging for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models. Apple did not improve connectivity speeds with the USB-C port in any of the new models, maintaining the status quo.

iphone-16-design.jpg

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus continue to have USB 2 transfer speeds of up to 480Mb/s, while the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max feature USB 3 transfer speeds up to 10Gb/s. 480Mb/s is the same transfer speed that the Lightning port supported.

During today's event, Apple mentioned faster USB 3 speeds when discussing the A18 Pro, which implied that it would be faster than the A17 Pro. It looks like Apple instead was comparing the A18 Pro to the A18 in that instance, ultimately highlighting a feature that was already present in the iPhone 15 Pro models.

Despite the confusing wording, technical specifications for the new iPhone 16 models suggest Apple has not made changes to any USB-C transfer speeds. Note that taking advantage of the 10Gb/s transfer speeds in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max requires an appropriate 10Gb/s USB-C cable.

Apple's iPad Pro models, which also have a USB-C port, support Thunderbolt transfer speeds of up to 40Gb/s.

Apple planted these little easter eggs of bad news to shadow the fact AirPods Max have h1 chips and lost support for wired audio (which technically wasn't that great since the wired audio was converted from bluetooth to get from the left ear cup to the right, creating latency and degradation).

Why are they being such *******s about the USB port speeds!? There's no excuse at this point in 2024 for implementing USB 2 in a new, supposedly "market-leading" device. It just stinks of deliberately holding back features in order to iteratively drip-feed them over the next 10 years, instead of actually giving us a modern device. See also: Front Camera.

Jobs didn't care about what he said or who he said it to and he was in salesman mode , trying to get people to believe his vision, not just Apple's.

You now have smart, but awkward socially, engineers and finance people running things, none of who want to become a meme like Ballmer or even Jobs, and a very guarded corporate culture where everything is so much bigger corporately and unable to want or need to try and sell people on Apple's vision. So rehearsed and polished recorded presentations it is.

Takes a lot of the personality and character out of the company and the products, but, does anyone really care except those old enough to appreciate the past ones?

Having the faster transfer speeds on the 15 Pro is fantastic. I'd hate to backup ~100gb of video over USB2 speeds.
I mean most aren't backing up that much video, and if they are they probably have a Pro that they shot it on.

Not defending them, but I bet Apple has literally hundreds of millions of USB 2 controllers (that they used to use for Lightning) in bins that they've bought already, from an environmental perspective it's great that they're finding uses for these rather than just toss them, as ridiculous as it is to be shipping USB 2 host devices in 2024.

BC they literally don't want us to transfer our collections of media (for many of us, collected over decades) via USB - they want us to pay for iCloud storage, Apple TV, Apple Music, etc. It's infuriating and it's awful customer treatment.

How many people actually transfer a bunch of stuff regularly over USB? How many people would this actually matter to at all? It has to be a fraction of a single percentage point... something like .03%. And I mean both pro and non-pro iPhone users...

Almost no one is transferring anything over a wire in 2024. If it's important to you, buy the pro.

This is just something for people to get upset about.

Can you share your source for this? The H1 isn’t limited to bluetooth fidelity afaik, and it doesn’t make sense that Apple engineered the wired connection cable if it was. There’s a noticeable, if minor (they are already good) fidelity upgrade in my experience and I didn’t notice latency when wired and I am very sensitive to it (I work with pro audio and can tell the difference between 2ms and 12ms when playing an instrument and using headphones, for example).

The wired vs. wireless latency difference is enormous as you’d expect.

Admittedly I haven’t used them when playing a guitar through a DI just by coincidence, but I have used them with synthesizers and they performed fine.

Where are you getting latency information? If you experienced it, were you using the built in Mac jack or an external DAC that supported higher bitrate and low latency?

I agree not upgrading to H2 is very stupid. But I’d like more information about your claims if you wouldn’t mind, especially if you have technical data or even better RTL numbers.

the worst thing that Covid left us are the prerecorded keynotes, each prerecorded video is even more boring the last one.

I watched every Keynote before since maybe 2012 and didn't even try to watch one of those pre-produced when they started in 2020.

Very sad.

A friend showed me some new Android phones that he might buy one from and every single one also had only USB 2.0 speed. I always thought this had been only an Apple thing.

As an iPhone 13 mini user (with a severely degraded battery), I was hoping for a reason to upgrade. Sadly, with each iPhone release lately, there is so much to be pissed about.

In contrast, the m1 MacBook Pro was an awesome announcement. Wish they could do something similar in the iPhone space.
