Lack of MagSafe is a dealbreaker. I've been using only MagSage for a while now, both at my desk, at my bedside, in the car and at work. But it's a great entry level model, but the price is so high that you might as well get an iPhone 15 or 16.
Magnets are expensive

Doesn't it just have one lens on the back, and isn't that lens a fixed focal length? How would it have two different "optical" zoom levels? Am I missing something?

It’s a surprising omission because you’d think Apple makes a fair bit of money on selling and licensing MagSafe accessories.

Wouldn’t be a dealbreaker for me though since it does support Qi, and I mostly only use wireless charging in cars (which are just Qi, not MagSafe)
Exactly. I might have been able to accept some of the compromises for the old price, even $499. But $599, for something that’s so much less than the 16, which is now not that much more expensive.

Colour me very disappointed.

is it really missing Thread? That seems like a strange omission.
The RF front end is the same as BT so it should be mainly an issue of using the correct firmware, surely?

I looked through all the tech specs to see if there was any aspect in which the phone was better than the iPhone 16 Pro Max, just to see what might be coming with the 17. Am I right in thinking that the ƒ/1.6 aperture back camera lens (Fusion) is objectively better than the ƒ/1.78 aperture one on the 16 Pro Max, considering that they are both 48 megapixels?

48MP sensor with 1x and 2x like how it was introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max

Magsafe is trivial to add if you care. Buy a $15 kit on Amazon and glue it to the back of your phone or case. I've added it to an iPhone 8 and and iPhone X, and my brother has added it to his Android.

This is not worth complaining about.
Alright pal. Jeez. Let's agree to disagree.

I cannot believe people are so clueless! This is UTTERLY TRIVIAL to fix!

The lack of MagSafe is a definite shame. So many useful accessories – wallets, tripods, chargers, car mounts – out the window. Why?!

You can use a case with magsafe magnets to do the same thing. I have one on my SE 2022, and my wife had a magsafe case on her Pixel 8 for a little while.

To be fair though, most people will add a case to their phone and you can just add one with a magnet. im using my iPhone 8 with a magnetic case and use all the iphone MagSafe accessories. Charging might be slower but i use a charger with a fan and the iphone keeps cool while topping up.

One can add MagSafe via a case. Some cases for the 16E provide the required magnets.
