Why would you expect $499 especially when it comes with most things the 16 has apart from extra camera lens & MagSafe
Because this is literally an iPhone 14 with newer processor, and way too much downgrades and economy (old screen, old wifi, bluetooth, less physical cameras...). The 14's price was 599, so lower price is something to expect.

Really upset by the announcement (and the price asked) so far. I guess, I replace the battery on my beautiful green 13 mini and stay with it for 1 more year.

So it doesn't have Precision Finding (ie Airtag) support?
So far the Airtag page says this :
  1. Precision Finding is compatible with iPhone 11 models and later, excluding iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation).
So it may continue the SE series tradition of not supporting the Precision Finding.

Lack of U1 Wideband chip was the deal breaker. I went all in on AirTags last holiday season and losing localized tracking is a bridge too far.
I was already starting to feel iffy with the loss of adjust focus on portrait mode, which is a feature anyone with kids or pets relies on to make their portraits worth anything.

Oh well. I was all ready to order on Friday but looks like I’m keeping my 14.

I'm just here to say Apple can shove this and I'll be an Android user come next spring.
INSANE GOUGING.
NO COLOURS
128 GB BASE

I was execting it to be overpriced, and I'm STILL SCANDALIZED. 720 EUROS GET LOST.
This is a 750 dollar phone.

750 US dollars. .. ... . !

EDIT : OM Y FRreeaking god it gets worse!!! WAY worse !!!! No MAGSAFE? No FIND MY ???? The 12 has Magsafe !!! The 11 has U1 !!! Why ??? I'm boycotting all Apple devices, I'm done. That was the last straw.

Going back to a full Windows environment for work soon anyway and I'll be switching to a laptop PC.
They will untether the Apple Watch from iPhone if they know what's good for them, because the marketing walled garden ploy won't work on me any more after this.

I just found a 400 euro second-hand iPhone 14. There is NO WAY you can justify this piece of ***** package of suck at that price.
400 should have been the price.
They are clearly trying to gouge and screw over clients who never could afford to refresh in the first place. Staying in the Apple ecosystem has become punitive, they are making their devices worse and gouging prices.

Plus Tim showed up at the Orange dictator's quincinera.

This is the iPhone for the people that say “I want to buy the cheapest iPhone possible, because I don’t have money for an AirTag, a MagSafe charger, in my home I don’t have Wi-Fi, I don’t have a dog and a cat” so I will only use the camera to take occasional pictures of anything without importance.

Or “this is the iPhone that the company brought to me and will only check my corporate e-mail, and they don’t buy me anything else than a USB-C cable for charging”.

Or “this is my grandma’s new iPhone; now they can FaceTime me”.

All missed features are pointless to the market Apple is targeting.

Because, ladies and genteel men, this is the cheapest iPhone that you can or will could buy new, with a contract or at retail, and there’s millions of people that can afford the USD$600, but not the USD$800.

So, if you want MagSafe or UWB, please, buy the 16 non-e and…

That optical zoom bullet point is super misleading for the iPhone 16E. Marketing materials all say it is 2x zoom with "optical quality". Yes, it presents you with a 2x choice in the camera app but it is not true optical zoom!

Why would anyone prefer this phone to a 14 from 3rd party or even to the refurbished 15 (directly from Apple)? The price is very much the same.

Does it mean 16e has the main camera from 15 given the lack of some features?

nah thats a lazy take it’s actually better value than a 15

They literally took the 14 away, replaced it with sth WAY WORSE, and GOUGED THE PRICE.

Probably because the people who could the 16e doesn’t know this, and they will never know.

And, guess: Apple is a profit company.

The 16e is targeting people with a cheap Android, or a iPhone X or older, or even the iPhone 11 that they have 4 or 5 years ago.

Oh! And the people with the iPhone SE! How I could forgot this!

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus (2024) have a custom for Apple Snapdragon X71 modem that is effectively a refreshed X70 modem, not the current generation flagship X75 modem. The X71 modem Apple is using lacks numerous X75 modem features. Please correct the comparison.

My theory is that the launch of the 16e is a marketing push for the 16 ... only $200 more but MANY more features and especially MagSafe. And there will be the 17 in six months time with the latest chip.

Apple are being a bit myopic by not including MagSafe. The 16e will become the default phone for a lot of business contracts, and MagSafe would have brought a lot of potential accessory sales.
Another way to think about this is that Apple will sell a lot of cases that add MagSafe compatibility like the ones that are everywhere in the Android world already. Then they will sell accessories on top of that.

MagSafe isn't missing, it's just been unbundled ;)

Battery life is a very important everyday feature, and there the iPhone 16e is much improved vs other 6.1 inch iPhones.
Any omissions vs the 16 are minor compared to this. And $200 less.
The grumbling here is out of proportion, the 16e is a good deal.
