I like the “sticker” USB C port plugs BUT these UXCELL are the best. All the other USB C port plugs super small; these UXCELL are “rectangle” and provide perfect place for pinky.

I had a 10% discount code and shipping was free, so $72. It’s been on my phone since the phone arrived. I do like it a lot.

As a side note, I’ve purchased two other cases: an Andar Aspen that I returned because the color wasn’t even close to what was shown on the website and a Quadlock case that fits decent but the buttons suck. I’ll be keeping so I can use my phone as a pseudo cycle computer on my bike.

So, having tried way too many cases (though not all 😈) this year, I’ve now settled on a current personal Top Five. (I have the silver 17 Pro. The experience on a Pro Max might differ).
  • 1: I’ve struggled a bit with that, but I think I have to give it to the Mous Limitless. If it were a bit more rounded and comfortable overall, it would be the absolute GOAT for me. It‘s probably still beating every other case I have here when it comes to protectiveness.
  • 3: Phone Rebel Gen 7: Just took it off after over a week on my phone. Still like it a lot but I‘m not trusting it to be as protective as No. 1 and 2 on this list somehow (though it probably is). It just feels almost minimalist and snaps on like a thin Aramid case (way easier to remove though). Also wish it was a bit more grippy. MagSafe is craaaazy strong (struggled to get it off my ESR car mount). Notes: The metal camera ring is already showing some slight wear even though I’m always handling the phone like a raw egg. And after removing it after over a week, there was some detritus under the slightly loose top part...
  • 4: Dbrand Grip: Unique looking with the added option to personalise it. Tight fitting rigid case. One has to struggle a bit to get the phone in and out of it. Not sure how protective it is. It is a hard plastic shell without soft lining or additional shock absorbing material. Also: the integrated buttons with slits are a downside.

I usually only try to buy a couple cases per phone. One slimmer/easier handling daily driver for light/medium duty, and a more rugged case for travel.

The Spigen Rugged I bought as a stopgap for the new phone is a very nice case, considering its price, but I've been keeping an eye out for something hardier.

I like how the Grip basically ignores the camera bump and doesn't try to mimic a kiddie pool sitting on the surface of the phone. Way too make case designs erect a wall around the plateau and call it a day, which IMO is unimaginative and uninspired.

But if it's simply a plastic shell, then I'm going to lean toward the Mous, who also does actually seem to perform some engineering on their cases, or at least market them that way.

Dbrand's customization options are appealing, but one would think it would be easier to order an extra $20 piece of vinyl with each base case, without having do a kludge on their site by ordering a second, then omitting the case. There's also such a thing as trying too hard with the marketing, but maybe I'm just the kind who likes to keep my lawn clear.

I want to try one so bad. As someone else mentioned; reminiscent of the Evutec days.

I've had a couple Evutec cases, and have handled the Pitaka Summa (cough), or whatever they're calling it this month. Their cases are sold in retail stores in Asia, with display samples. That's exactly how I'd describe it.

Worth 80 bucks? TBF, I don't think most cases are remotely worth what they retail for, intrinsically, but that's what the market will bear, and rationality is often put aside when it comes to buying cases.

  • 2: Beats Rugged. Don‘t think I have to say much about it. It‘s decently protective, grippy, fits like a glove but is easy to install and remove without any sharp edges. Perfect case for a serial case changer. Wish it came in more fun colors.

  • 5. Wiiuka Skiin: I wish this was a rugged case. It would be perfect. The nicest feeling case I have. Soft leather with very soft lining, clicky aluminium buttons. Half covered camera plateau. Comes from the same factory as the Bullstrap cases.
Honorable mentions that didn’t make the list:
  • Apple Silicone: Perfect fit, has the usual silicone problems though. Gets greasy and chips easily. Also don’t like the squishy buttons.
  • Apple Clear Case: sooo nice to hold, phone feels like a smooth pebble with it. Fits the aesthetic of the silver pro. But not very protective, has a loose fit in places that lets in a lot of dust and it’s still a pain in the a** to remove it.
  • Phone Rebel Air 2: Beautiful minimalist, affordable case. Redundant for me now that I have the Gen 7, because that is basically a more protective version of the Air 2.
  • ESR Hybrid Clear Case: Solid, comfortable, very affordable clear case with strong MagSafe.
Forgot one case in my honorable mentions:

The „regular“ Beats case. So nice to hold, perfect buttons, so pretty… Albeit not the most protective and also super hard to get off the phone again… And a bit slippery with very dry hands.

On another note. You mentioned that the Gen 7 was on the “minimalistic” side, more than the Mous. However does that necessarily mean it’s not as protective as the Mous though?

How does the regular Beats compare tot the Apple Silicone?
If we are talking about the open bottom Beats case I gave it a go. Fit is immaculate, buttons are darn near perfect, super light..feels like you just have the phone in your hand. The material is more of a hard plastic. I’d still be using it, it’s just super super slippery with dry hands. I will say any touch of moisture and the case feels much much gripper.

Just picked up this beauty on a whim and I’m more than pleasantly surprised. Torras shockproof 17 bucks on Amazon. This is the best fitting case I have tried, I like the frosted back (right where the color change is on the phone). Buttons are super super snappy and clicky. Really light at least it feels that way. Cutout alignment is spot on also.

It seems pretty obvious that the Gen 7 is in the ballpark with the Mous, but is not quite as protective. For one, the sides on the Gen 7 are flush with the screen, whereas the Mous has slightly raised sides. Also, the Mous is more rigid than the PR above the plateau. Just those two factors give the nod to the Mous.

On the Air, Phone Rebel also dispensed with the TPE corner inserts, which even more tips the scales toward the Mous.

I know the Mous has raised top and bottom lips. So the middle of the Mous is slightly raised and not flush?

Would a drop test convince you that the Gen 7 would be your #1 if the results were good?
I don’t think so. The not so well fitting top with dust creeping in is a bit of a bummer I have to say. I guess not a problem with a regular wipe down of the phone.
It’s a very close top three though otherwise. Can’t really go wrong with any of these cases.
