The entire phone market needs a kick up the backside. Seriously, the industry at large seems to think the rear of a phone is a flipping design feature. You know, the but that faces away from you or is buried in a case.

Too lazy to r/theydidthemath but a 19” foldable to me sounds interesting and means that it’ll be somewhat small as a laptop if half is the screen and half is a screen-based keyboard (with all sorts of contextual stuff happening) when in laptop mode, and a 19” iPad/TV when unfolded flat.

Think of it something similar to this

Apple- We made it thinner, removed multiple cameras and finally stopped using the design we have been for 5+ years. We will call it "major design changes" when announcing it on stage....

If the foldable MacBook has Pencil support I’m so buying it.
I’m interested in seeing it first. Why does everybody feel like they need to love it or hate it whenever apple works on something new?
so we're at the out of ideas part of the cycle (make things bigger and thinner) again
See?
How would the foldable MacBook fold? In half to close and then in half again?
Fun trivia. It is said to be impossible to fold a piece of paper in half more than 7 times. Go ahead. Try it.
What happened to rollable displays?

Wasn’t flexible LED displays suppose to be the next big thing?
They shut down research after I made a joke about rolling up the e-newspaper and swatting the dog on the rump.

Foldables are the next step in the "pro" segment. I have a 15PM and foldable from the "country we dare not mention", and the form factor makes me cry when I hold my iphone. Iphone is soooo ridicous lame in 2024... So heavy, single screen, can't edit a mistyped number even! But still, is my primary and most reliable device. so sad...

I would have very little use for a a 20" laptop, but I can imagine many situations where that would be amazing. Even past jobs I have had. An almost desktop experience on the move. I bet a few months after they release this, if they do, there will be dozens of copies.

19 inch MacBook? but no 27 inch iMac?

19” MBP means software keyboard?

Curious for pricing on these. Won’t be cheap.

I like that mockup image of IPhone 17 Air. Gone is the ridiculous stove. They could make it even better by removing the bump completely.

PS. Don’t worry, there will still be Max modes with stove bumps for those of you who shoot Hollywood movies on your phones hanging from a bridge.

I went from 17" Intel laptop to Macbook Pro 16", back to an Intel 17" windows laptop because I missed that extra 1" and the number pad. If a Macbook Pro comes out with 19" model, I might just go back to Mac again, IF it has a number pad on that keyboard.

But here is a thought what if what they mean by foldable isn't what we think? Maybe the screen transforms from something smaller into a bigger 19" display?

The more expensive option then is only $100-150 more than the other model that you could buy (but don’t like), so it’s an easy upsell. This is different from if that model didn’t exist and the only alternative would be a $300 cheaper model, which then appears more like a bargain, without the model in the middle to muddy the waters.

I don’t actually think that Apple knowingly introduces models that sell poorly, but the upselling effect is real.
But then the $300 cheaper model should appear to be even more of a bargain with the existence of the middle model because the middle model is $150 more expensive but not $150 better in features (assuming that’s what gives it bad value). It seems to me a bad value middle model should drive customers away from it in both directions, up and down. Why only up?

Of course I’m going to see it before I buy it, but I’ve been desperate for a pen input portable Mac for ages. I’ve been using all sorts of very non-ideal alternatives in the meantime, so whatever this (possibly) is, it’s most likely better.
Also it probably only seems like people only love it or hate it because those who are middle of the road about it usually don’t comment haha.

People, just imagine this scene for a while:

Cupertino CA, September 9th, 2025. Tim Cook is in the middle of the screen, he’s being spotted at somewhere in the Apple Park… Suddenly, he holds his hands together to say:

“I’m proud to be here to announce the thinnest iPhone we’ve ever made…. Our new iPhone is light, fine, elegant, and is foldable!… We all at Apple know that everybody will be delightful and you are going to love it”

With slim bezels even without a foldable display at least an 18 inch MacBook should be possible that still fits into a cabin bag with maximum dimensions.

My Windows notebooks always had 17 inch. So the biggest downsides of MacBooks for me were the smaller displays.

Apple is cheating with display sizes anyway, as they do not just count the diagonal of the maximum rectangle that can be displayed.

There has been a proper 17 inch MacBook in the past.
