I’m confused by this.

Who exactly is asking for this?

Speculation: Some folks are complaining that the phones are too bulky / feels big in their pockets perhaps? But instead of re-releasing a mini, they are hoping that a slim will attract the mini-crowd and entice some to upgrade from the vanilla 17?

(I'm deeply doubtful, on both counts, but who knows.)

Last time this kind of rampant SKU differentiation happened Steve had to return and slash the range to refocus on value.
There was plenty of rampant SKU differentiation under Steve. For most of the mid-to-late 2000's the MacBook Pro line came in 3 sizes - 13", 15", and 17" all with different specifications, update schedules, and features. Plus you had the regular MacBook line, as well as the MacBook Air line. There were multiple types of iPod (regular, Mini, Nano, Shuffle, Touch).

Coming from the iPad M1 to the new iPad M4 the slim size is noticeable.
I assume this noticeable difference will be present in the iPhone slim model.
I've always been a fan of the Max Pro line, but this time around, I prefer a slimmer model with a more powerful processor and more RAM.

I can really see the iPhone slim costing more than the base level pro but having less features.

It will be a desirable object and will have something about it that the other phones don’t have - a glimpse into the future of the iPhone.

People will pay for that.

Just as they did for the iPhone X - even though the 8 plus offered more for less.

Who knows how accurate any of this information is and, even if it is, could still very well change over the next year or so. But I do like the idea of Apple diversifying its yearly iPhone lineup a bit from the same ol' thing it's been for years now which is just a 2x2 product matrix consisting of:
  • small and cheap
  • big and cheap
  • small and premium
  • big and premium
Giving customers more choice in what they want to prioritize in the iPhone they want such as thinness at the expense of longer battery and vice versa, smaller screen but no less premium than the bigger screen option and has all the same features, etc. More choice is not only good among competitors in the same industry, it's good for consumers within their preferred brand as well.

iPhone X had a brand new design and sure the display size was big on spec sheets but the physical size of the phone was smaller than the 8+. I wouldn't be surprised if the 18 series introduced a bigger sized of the rumored "new" design, like the Xs max was just a bigger iPhone X
How about a smaller sized version? Maybe 6.1-6.2” so it can still fit in my pocket somewhat comfortably.

I'm not really sure he does anything better than a whole cadre of bean counters who could fill that spot
(sort of impossible to know really)

Any change involves risk, but it also short circuits any ability to have an upgrade in that position if no changes ever happen.

This has been a pretty long run for him honestly
Some fresh ideology and energy would be good

That’s the thing: we need someone better than a can of bean counters. Might as well start figuring out who that person is

Good luck to the Apple Store employees explaining to customers that the "slim" model is more advanced than the "pro" model, and at the same time explaining that the MacBook Air is the base model MacBook.

The lineup is becoming a mess.
Not to mention the iPad Pro is thinner than the iPad Air.

Steve must be turning in his grave…

The only reason? Telephoto lens is a huge reason for any photographer.
Well, I think the photographer is better of with a Samsung if that’s the case. They’ve beaten Apple for years on that front. Apple has no own developed telephoto lens… till now it uses Sony. Also Sony has better offerings for that… somehow Apple don’t uses Sony’s best for their pro lineup. Competitors are using better photo lenses from Sony for a cheaper price.

I'm starting to ask myself realistically how far are Apple from releasing an Android iPhone just to extend the range.

Last time this kind of rampant SKU differentiation happened Steve had to return and slash the range to refocus on value. Hopefully there's someone waiting in the wings who understands Apple's core values to take over when Tim finally decides he has enough money - I assume he's not in it for the love of the tech.
Yes, I do remember that, and it effectively saved the company. Apparently, Tim Cook has forgotten all of that, and decided to take Apple to a place that more closely resembles Best Buy. 😕

And the best camera is the one you have on you. Photographers don't carry their full frame cameras everywhere they go. Having a telephoto versus no telephoto is a big deal given modern lenses are honestly pretty wide (26mm FF equivalent).

The iOS camera app sucks. It forces a mushy AI filter on everything, even in RAW. the cameras are only for social media and nothing else imo.

We also tried shooting with prores and blackmagic camera app and the footage was abysmal. You just cant get around that tiny, noisy sensor.

I'm a Pixel user myself as I find that to be the best, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max isn't a slouch, just not my pick. I do think a telephoto lens is key though as I've used 14 Plus and 15 Pro Max and the addition of that telephoto is important for my workflow.

Today's main lenses are honestly not that good and Apple's marketing and keynotes make sense. The 2x and 3x focal length are much better for portrait photos. While 5x is on the long end, it still can be used outdoors if you're good at foot zooming.

Ok, but will any of them lay flat on a table without rocking back and forth? That’s really all I want my next iPhone to do. It’s not even a new feature, they used to do that!

Makes me curious how you experience Android vs iOS and what made you to switch to Pixel? Could you give a honest review?
