All this for a glorified text predicting chatbot 🙄
Where is the proverbial AI productivity boost? I see semiconductor inflation everywhere as well as lots of AI slop and layoffs/hiring freeze. But I'm yet to see society-changing benefits.
Makes no sense. Going from a 16PM to a 17PM is a waste. I done it and never should have. It’s why I’m skipping the 18 PM, even more so with the price increaseThat's it, I'm getting the 17 Pro Max 512gb in Blue. I was going to hold onto my iPhone 16 Pro Max 512gb, but now the writings on the wall, I will pull the trigger just in case if anything happens
What about the iPhone Air? I see on BestBuy it's discounted at $839 right now from where I'm atMakes no sense. Going from a 16PM to a 17PM is a waste. I done it and never should have. It’s why I’m skipping the 18 PM, even more so with the price increase
I haven't pulled the trigger on it just yet. The main reason why I want to get the 17 Pro from my 16PM, apart from the price, is the 12gb of RAM. Other than that, I think I can hold onto my 16 PM for another year or twoMakes no sense. Going from a 16PM to a 17PM is a waste. I done it and never should have. This is what keeps me up at night. Do people really believe companies pushing this want to make our lives better? Of course not. They want more profits and that means massive layoffs, price gauging, monopolies, tax evasion, etc and AI is helping them with all of it. I’m already dealing with generative AI chatbots calling my local plumber who just sold out to a venture capital firm. There is no oversight and regulations under the current US administration as corporations and private equity are buying out businesses as boomers retire or people sell out, eliminating competition and creating more monopolies. The Paramount Skydance WBD+ merger never should have been approved and in normal times wouldn’t.Then she turned to me and, with a mixture of worry and perplexity (see what I dis there?) in her face, she told me that any day now she will stay at home and let the machine do the work.
This is exactly what they are counting on, tons of FOMO to drive purchases before prices go up. Win/Win for Apple! That's it, I'm getting the 17 Pro Max 512gb in Blue. I was going to hold onto my iPhone 16 Pro Max 512gb, but now the writings on the wall, I will pull the trigger just in case if anything happens

These people don’t care that it will all collapse when people don’t have the disposable income to keep the system running. They’re making as much as they can while selling off what remains and picking over the dead carcass. Why do you think Thiel and Musk and Zuckerberg and Bezos and so many others have bunkers? They know it may collapse on this trajectory and they’ll watch it from their estates and bunkers as AI takes care of their needs. It’s not here to help us.
“It's a big club, and you ain't in it.”
Spot on. The ‘08 financial collapse allowed massive corporate consolidation as larger banks bought out smaller ones and this model held true across sectors. The dot com boom worsened matters as the brick and mortar business model was replaced by cheaper online stores. Now AI is the next step in capitalism. Late stage capitalism is hitting everyone.Sad, but true.
The road ahead for most companies is to lay off as much workforce as they can to keep increasing benefits, and the AI is going to be the tool they needed.
When I was a teenager, I always thought “why are companies so obsessed with breaking benefit records, when they could keep working if they just sustained the same benefits they have (plus inflation)?”. Another thought I used to have was “If their goal is to constantly increase the benefits… there has to be a point where benefits stabilize because you’ve saturated the market. There’s no such thing as eternal growth”.
What’s happening to this companies, such as my bank, is that first they saturated an already mature market (here in Spain we experienced a dramatic reduction in bank companies since 2008, and nowadays we only have three big banks), when they couldn’t grow more they increased the fees, to keep the benefits growing, then instead of settling on those already big benefits, they needed to keep increasing them, so they started closing physical branches or offices, firing or “retiring” workers, pushing their clients to operate through their app, and saving in office rents and fired workers wages. Now, the next step to retire even more of the workforce is installing AI chatbots, so that one or two workers can handle the work of five… more layoffs…
Sooo true its scary.Spot on. The ‘08 financial collapse allowed massive corporate consolidation as larger banks bought out smaller ones and this model held true across sectors. Regulation is necessary not to stop progress but to keep it steady for average household income and minimum wage to evolve with changes. Yet that hasn’t been happening since the 1980’s. We’ve had brief periods of progress but now that’s all been wiped out. We’re coasting on fumes and there are no guardrails and people are dazzled by AI without realizing it’s here to replace us.
Agree on the recommendations not taking into account this mess from AI. I’m now updating what I need as this was my update cycle year but I plan on keeping everything for 4-5 years. It’s financially prudent given how much everything is going to increase. All these ridiculous price increases do not seem to support the advice: “wait to buy new tech until you actually need it”.
Maybe it still applies, but it’s just more painful when you do need to buy new tech 🙁
I have 14pro, with 79% battery. Do i NEED new pro max? Need is a strong word… typing mistakes seem to decrease with the larger keyboard, but im sure the heavier weight and size would be an annoyance at times. (AI things might be nice, as would the vapor cooling in the summer heat)
Maybe the Air 2 will amazing and worth… (quick calculation)…. $1299. 😕
Sigh. Just made an Apple appointment to see if they’ll do battery service on my 14pro that has a small crack in the corner of the back glass.
My 17 Pro Max will probably be my last Pro model iPhone. Will move over to Air or regular model next year. Apple avoided cost increased for many years surprisingly. Yeah the base price increased on the Pros but so did the base storage. My only pause is the $300 increase? That's where I draw the line. I don't need 3 cameras and a 6.9" display that bad.
Yeah, I now bought an M5 MacBook Air, right before the price increase, and with that, my M2 iPad Pro, and my A15 iPhone SE 3, I will hold as long as I am able to. 2030? Easily… 2033? Maybe… 2035? Hopefully…Agree on the recommendations not taking into account this mess from AI. I’m now updating what I need as this was my update cycle year but I plan on keeping everything for 4-5 years. I don’t want to be pessimistic but the bad ending of this timeline is that we end up without “computers” as we know them now, replaced by dumb “terminals” that operate in the cloud. Powered by AI, of course, at the price of a modest monthly subscription... We’re already seeing it with video game streaming services.I hope to keep mine for the next few years. Don't know what is going to happen a year or 2 or 3 from now.
I would definitely get the Air now if I were you. On BestBuy, i am seeing it at $839. Not sure if it's the same where you're atMy 17 Pro Max will probably be my last Pro model iPhone. I was trying not to be pessimisstic too, but you might be right. Tech (As in Big Tech) has only gotten worse over the years, not entirely better.I don’t want to be pessimistic but the bad ending of this timeline is that we end up without “computers” as we know them now, replaced by dumb “terminals” that operate in the cloud. The developer could do memory use benchmarking and vibe code for efficiency.Having said that, optimization is king. Even 64 GB won’t be enough if developer is lazy and “vibe coding” instead of doing actual job
They don't want us to own anything - whether it's homes or media, there's more money in subscription services and renting. Once digital media then streaming replaced physical media, companies pushed subscriptions as the new, convenient business model. Now we have a handful of international media conglomerates who own franchise IP's and only offer streaming content which they can pull at anytime. Many programs and shows aren't even available for streaming or purchase resulting in people pirating media. Buying content means you're tied to that company's platform to watch what you own. It's ridiculous and we collectively ushered it in just as we did all the smart home devices marketed to make our lives easier while they collected data. We effectively paid corporations to take from us while telling us it's amazing and convenient.I don’t want to be pessimistic but the bad ending of this timeline is that we end up without “computers” as we know them now, replaced by dumb “terminals” that operate in the cloud.
