Cheaper and lighter. Titanium is much stronger than aluminum but still slightly heavier. It's slightly stronger than SS but much lighter.

Seems like they want/need to offset the bigger batteries weight and the cost savings is just cream on top.The phones started to get too heavy with the 13/14 Pro Max and I think they are trying to avoid that. Titanium just got too heavy with the new design.
One of the massive upgrades (for me) from the 13 PM to the 15PM was the slight reduction in weight. You wouldn't think it matters but those 20 grams do, doesn't pull down your pants nearly as much.

How they'll spin it as a -pro- feature will be interesting after they hyped titanium so much since the 15.

If the Aluminum is lighter than the 15/16PM i'll be extremely happy even though it's a downgrade in terms of materials. If its the same weight I will be disappointed if the battery life isn't significantly better.
I love big phones but i'm sick of them getting heavier and heavier.
Aluminum on a pro phone is such a massive downgrade for people like myself who go caseless. The smallest bump/impact to the frame always leaves a giant dent in the metal, where titanium or stainless steel would be totally fine.
