Almost any name sounds better than “Pro Max”, which IMO, was always the dumbest name for an iPhone that anybody could have come up with. ProMax always sounded like a totally different (not an electronic device) product line, with totally different connotations. If rumor is true, good riddance!

I’m tired of trying to keep up in the specs game, it’s why I left building up PC’s and switched to Mac in 2010.

This Ultra thing got me thinking about trading in my 15 Pro Max on a 16e and calling it a day. I’m done 🤣

Dragging that average sale price up by selling idiot phones to idiots with money sounds like a grand old time at the Apple Mothership.
Apple already did this by removing the 128 GB model for the iPhone 15 Pro Max and 16 Pro Max, bumping the minimum price for the Pro Max by $100. It was so transparently greedy that for the first time I went for the smaller model.

Is it a matter of time before this nightmare makes its way to the software side?

iOS (free - simple, solid, little customization, light AI)
iOS Air ($ - lightweight, no frills, some tinkering/customization, light AI)
iOS Pro ($$ - allows "pro-level" tinkering/customization, "pro-level" AI)
iOS Ultra ($$$ - sideloading? You betcha!)

An iPhone Ultra should be "ultra", not Android faux ultra.

Yes, Apple, make a rugged iPhone Ultra. \o/
Ew why rugged? Just use a rugged case, the only way to make a phone rugged would be rubber/plastic bumpers and plastic screens, like you see on the rugged flip phones and androids.

Better to have a rugged case that can be replaced when the rubber/plastic get all chewed up than that be the body of the phone 🤷🏼‍♀️

Probably not.

Hold on to your butts, a $2000 iPhone is coming right up folks. Tone deaf Tim will say it’s the ultimate iPhone experience.
„Best iPhone we’ve ever made. We’re very proud of it!“
Tim’s voice

Yasss! The iPhone Ultra is truly the iPhone for ultra pros!
Hell yeah! Though I am not fond of the word “Ultra.” Makes me envision phones painted like “Ultraman” from my childhood TV.

As a software nerd, I submit:
  • iPhone 17 Pro#
  • iPhone 17 Pro++
  • iPhone 17 Pro² (although “ProPro” would be fun to say!)
This rumor is comically sad at this point.

Edit: ninja’d by @fatTribble on the software names 😁

Why rugged? Because the Apple Watch Ultra is rugged. Give it a lip above screen level to protect it, make it waterproof to a comparable depth to the watch, protection around the buttons, ditch the glass back. It doesn't have to be covered in rubber.

The differentiation between Pro and Pro Max was always kinda weird because in some years screen size was the only difference and in some years the Max got extra features. Although I generally prefer small(er) phones I like the idea of making the Ultra a separate tier in the line-up to let the engineers go all-out without having to account for the constraints of the smaller Pro‘s case.

I am so torn. On the one hand bringing all the good stuff to the size I want to buy is great. Especially loving the sound of a bigger battery and maybe smaller Dynamic Island.

But if this is like the Apple Watch Ultra, ie a huge impractical “rugged” phone, I’m not sure what I’ll do. I don’t want something significantly larger or heavier than my 13 Pro Max.

And my wallet is preemptively crying.
