Just like Ultra means more than Max(imum). Nothing can be more than the maximum! If Apple is going with the name “Ultra” and charging more there had better be substantial improvements. People are not going to pay for a name

I think it's a great move. People who buy phones at that price point of the max won't mind paying an extra hundred dollars for the added features. I know I would buy one. The iPhone lineup for next year will be the cleanest in a long time.

iPhone 16E $599
iPhone 16 $699
iPhone 17 $799
iPhone 17 Air $899
iPhone 17 Pro $999
iPhone 17 Ultra $1199

Very easy to understand and to differentiate. All Apple Intelligence compatible, nothing lower than an A18 chip and 8GB RAM.

(Perhaps iPhone 16 Plus for $799.)

I hope the iPhone 17 Ultra isn’t just a rebranding but actually embodies what “Ultra” represents for the Apple Watch—something truly high-end and purpose-driven. Apple doesn’t need just bigger and smaller displays. They need distinct models tailored to different audiences and lifestyles. An iPhone Air for minimalists, an iPhone Flip for compact usability, an iPhone Fold for multitasking, and an iPhone Ultra for those who want the absolute best. A more diversified lineup could redefine what an iPhone can be. Not what it has become.

I was all about upgrading from the 15 Pro to the 17 Pro but not so much these days. The new area for the camera is butt ugly. I don’t care about having a phone lighter than the 15 Pro so the Air is out and outside of those things if all the 17 Pro turns about to be is this new camera configuration plus a spec bumb it won’t be worth it. Not even close. Especially with Visual Intelligence being available for the 15 now as well.

Unless there’s something about the new phone I’ve not heard of I’m standing pat. If they ever do fix Siri, and I’ll believe that when I see it, that requires a new phone with better hardware I’d do it but I don’t be listening to what Apple says is coming. It’s going to take them a few years of delivering on what they are promising before this Siri nonsense is in the review mirror. Meanwhile Apple’s competitors are forging ahead in the AI department and Apple appears to be spinning its wheels.

Can somebody explain how you can go from “shipping in April or May to shipping as a part of iOS 19 next year (2026) … maybe …” in two weeks time?

Somebody high level needs to be fired for this debacle. If they can’t deliver on software why invest in their overpriced hardware?

Why rugged? Because the Apple Watch Ultra is rugged. Give it a lip above screen level to protect it, make it waterproof to a comparable depth to the watch, protection around the buttons, ditch the glass back. It doesn't have to be covered in rubber.
They can’t make a phone with a screen that big waterproof to the same depth as a watch, it could never handle the pressure. It would need to be oil filled like a dive computer, never going to happen. Besides, there has to be air inside the cameras, which would be the first things to pop.

Protection around the buttons would be hideous and impede usability on those constantly used buttons for no reason when a case does the same thing. Even if you don’t like cases, if you’re doing some extreme activity just put a case on temporarily 🤷🏼‍♀️ Almost no one goes caseless as it is, but I would hope anyone who’s taking their phone rock climbing or hiking or whatever would have one on…

People would complain to no end if they ditched the glass back as they’d have to get rid of wireless charging/magsafe, or if they used plastic they would complain that it scratched too easily and looked cheap

Hell yeah! Though I am not fond of the word “Ultra.” Makes me envision phones painted like “Ultraman” from my childhood TV.

As a software nerd, I submit:
  • iPhone 17 Pro#
  • iPhone 17 Pro++
  • iPhone 17 Pro² (although “ProPro” would be fun to say!)
This rumor is comically sad at this point.

Edit: ninja’d by @fatTribble on the software names 😁
Ohhh, these are great. One more thing.... Today Apple is announcing the iPhone Pro Max Ultra+. Apple took everything you love about the iPhone Pro Max Ultra and took it to a whole new level, for the truly ultra maximum professionals!

Next year: Ultra+

“Ultra Max”. Needs to cost at least $600 more than the next most expensive iPhone model. Feature some sort of distinctive massive camera bar or whatever to make it absolutely clear that you have the Ultra Max. People would buy.

Ew why rugged? Just use a rugged case, the only way to make a phone rugged would be rubber/plastic bumpers and plastic screens, like you see on the rugged flip phones and androids.

Better to have a rugged case that can be replaced when the rubber/plastic get all chewed up than that be the body of the phone 🤷🏼‍♀️
Apple would know how to make "rugged" look great. Not rubber and plastic bumpers resembling a rugged case.

Like these? I’m sure someone would buy them, but I like the leaked designs better personally

Funny enough, I really enjoy brutalist architecture, but I’d never want my tech to have that kind of heavy/rugged design language, I gravitate towards Apple products for their clean, minimalist and modern designs. The Apple watch ultra really threw me off when it was released, it feels very un-Apple to me as far as design goes, but I accepted that it might have been necessary to get that kind of depth rating. For an iPhone it just doesn’t make sense, for me

Not a fan of the ever ballooning camera growth, I rarely use the camera on my iPhone. I'd like an option where I have all the benefits of the "max" models; screen, SOC etc but without the hideous camera bump

If this his true then we could end up with 4 unique iPhone models? That'll be different if Apple do it.
