Apple needs something big for the iPhone's twentieth anniversary, and considering there's so little they could change that would be big enough for that special iteration of the iPhone, I think that's when this will be introduced.

Doesn't really matter to me if the under-display Face ID is coming to iPhone 17 or not, to be honest.

The best iPhone 17 surprise would be Apple not using PWM (pulse-width modulation, aka flickering) for their displays. I'm not buying another iPhone until they stop using PWM.

lol @ the update to the story. That’s a new record for one of these Nostradamus predictors changing their story. Good job, Ross Young. You “accidentally“ got a few people to cancel their iPhone 16 orders.

I feel like their job is to get people to not buy anything that comes out because there’s always something better on the horizon. There should be a spinoff website of MacRumors that just focuses on these far off predictions that’s called MacConfusers.

Man(whoever started this rumor) get the hell outta here with that I'm picking up my 16 pro max later tonight.
ITS TOO LATE IM NOT KEEPING THIS 14 PRO FOR ANOTHER YEAR
Your 14 is quite new and should still be working perfectly. It's hard for me to come to these forums these days and see the degree of consumerism and "must have" attitudes, especially when we're talking about items that are really built to last and get a lot of good use out of.

Hopefully they’ll get underglass Touch ID in as well. Just like EVERY OTHER MANUFACTURER has.

Do the Android "Touch ID" variations stand up to the high validation standards that Apple has been approved for with the official Touch ID? Apple's implementation with a metal ring is more than just a camera like the under-display versions. However, on MacBooks with Touch ID, there's no metal ring either, so hmmmm.

Huh? The iPhone X was a a complete design overhaul

Indeed, but it wasn't an "Anniversary Edition", it was the iPhone X.

Steve Jobs was vehemently anti-nostalgia, and Apple seems to have kept that ethos.

I rather have a supersonic touch ID under the display like some androids do. Face ID still has issues when not facing it directly, like in bed, laying flat on a desk, etc.
Same for me too… it doesn’t seem to recognize me especially in the morning when waking up from sleep 🫢

Laying flat on the desk is also a problem… don’t know if gravity is taking its toll on my face or something else. My experience varies 🤪

You ever just think Apple's engineering dept just throws their hands up and go "This is too hard... lets just change the bevel and call it a feature guys..."?

Like, the Jobs level drive to be the absolute cutting edge has slowly dripped down their leg into their shoe.

Update: Young has since said under-display Face ID is no longer expected for the iPhone 17 Pro. His previous response was sent in error.

Original story follows.

While the iPhone 16 series just began arriving to customers today, there are already rumors about the next-generation iPhone 17 series.

Beyond-iPhone-13-Better-Blue-Face-ID-Single-Camera-Hole.jpg

In a post shared on social media platform X on Thursday, display industry analyst Ross Young said he believes that next year's iPhone 17 Pro will feature under-display Face ID. This change would presumably extend to the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Under-display Face ID has been rumored for several years, but it has failed to materialize. However, Young has a good track record with display-related information about future Apple products, including being the first source to reveal that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max would feature larger 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, respectively. If he says the iPhone 17 Pro will have under-screen Face ID, there is a good chance it will.

In April 2023, Young shared a roadmap that showed both iPhone 17 Pro models would feature under-display Face ID, but he said the devices would still have a hole in the screen for the front camera. He does not expect both under-display Face ID and an under-display front camera until the iPhone 19 Pro models in three years from now.

With under-display Face ID, the iPhone 17 Pro models could have only a single hole at the top of the display, similar to recent Android smartphones from Samsung and Google. However, no specific design changes have been rumored yet.

Another unanswered question: Will the Dynamic Island live on with under-display Face ID?

With the iPhone 17 series still a year away, there is plenty of time remaining for additional rumors, which should give us a better idea of what to expect.

They will save that for like the iPhone 20, a new design and something different
