Hopefully they’ll get underglass Touch ID in as well. Just like EVERY OTHER MANUFACTURER has.
Yeah, while sure some day under screen camera would be aesthetically, nice having under screen touchID would be 100% more useful, since that works 99% (not most big gloves) of the time since your finger is already there, vs faceid where you might have something on your face, or more commonly an odd angle etc. I'd give up faceid in a heart beat to have touchid on the iPhone, and which I could give up Touch ID on Mac since its not where near where you are when typing and instead of faceid, which presumably would work wonderful since your essentially always right in front of it.

Your 14 is quite new and should still be working perfectly. It's hard for me to come to these forums these days and see the degree of consumerism and "must have" attitudes, especially when we're talking about items that are really built to last and get a lot of good use out of.
I know what you mean, but perhaps we shouldn't be too judgmental. Back in the day I wanted and often bought the new device every year (mind you, differences were more significant then and I started with the first iPhone). Then it became every 2 or 3 years. I may well keep my 15 PM for 4 years with a new battery in the middle of that unless there is a new feature that I really want which, the way things have been going, I doubt.

There is certainly nothing whatsoever that remotely tempts me to get the 16. I can't even be bothered to go to a local store and look at it. But if it makes people feel happy to get a new device every year, that's okay. The old devices are sold on, presumably, and feed the secondhand market.

iPhone 20…I feel like they’re going to have the iPhone 20 by 2027. 20 years since the iPhone debuted which is very fitting.

I have a gut feeling they’ll skip the number 19. Like last time they skipped the 9.
Yes, I'm thinking iPhone XX, skipping the 19. That is probably the one I'll buy next as it may be a significant upgrade in terms of design or features.

I rather have a supersonic touch ID under the display like some androids do. Face ID still has issues when not facing it directly, like in bed, laying flat on a desk, etc.

I got a Pixel 9 Pro for work. I love the under-display fingerprint sensor. I'm a big Apple fan but the Pixel 9 Pro is beyond anything being released from Apple. If that phone ran iOS, it would be the best iPhone ever released by a mile and it would be an easy day-one upgrade for me. Instead, I'm still using the iPhone 13 Pro as my personal phone and waiting for Apple to give me a good reason to actually upgrade.

I wanted a bigger iPhone and more storage
Its a 256 GB 14 Pro.
So now I’m getting a 512GB and 16 Pro Max

you know what? i will actually miss the dynamic island. i having been looking forward to an all display phone with no visible front cameras/sensors but since i have been using my 15 Pro Max i have enjoyed using the Dynamic Island.

Hopefully they keep it around (even if it is a bit smaller) with the 17 series and beyond until whenever they do finally achieve an all display phone.
I would expect the Dynamic Island to remain as a software feature to facilitate multitasking even if all of the screen cutouts are removed. It would just become more dynamic and flexible only appearing as needed.

Well for me it makes perfect sense , according to pu next years pro max model will feature a narrower Dynamic Island (achieved via a modified metalens).

I would highly doubt Apple would remove the Face ID camera on the iPhone 18 pro max according to Young’s previous revised roadmap.

The rumour mill suggests Face ID being hidden from the iPhones display no later than 2028, I see this more possible than Young’s previous claims.

I am now done waiting even if I hold on to my phone for 3 years, I am now upgrading from a 12 pro max to a 17 pro max for the upgraded cameras, more ram & narrower Dynamic Island.

But I do not know if I will get ever used to a black blob floating on the top of the screen. Apple should have never killed off the notch :(.

The Dynamic Island was a gimmick that has failed badly much like the MacBook pros Touch Bar both had little app integration.

Indeed, but it wasn't an "Anniversary Edition", it was the iPhone X.

Steve Jobs was vehemently anti-nostalgia, and Apple seems to have kept that ethos.
They literally skipped the number 9 to line up the phone with the 10th anniversary of the iPhone lol, if that isn’t recognition of the anniversary then nothing is. It’s not labeled anniversary edition, but still totally in recognition.

You won’t see under display FaceID until iPhone 20. Thingy-island is now not just a kludge. It’s become a feature and display for glanceable information that iOS really does seem to find useful.
I suppose you can continue thingy-island with under-display FaceID but why go to all that trouble with engineering when you dont have to.

There won't be an anniversary edition, just like there wasn't with the iPhone X, nor the Apple Watch 10. Apple, aside from a couple exceptions, doesn't care about such things.
No need to get your panties in a bunch. Sheesh. Still, the point is, in 2027 it would be 20 years since Apple made the iPhone in 2007, so 2027 would be an ideal time to unveil something new i.e. a redesign, in which the time aligns with what was said in this article:

"He does not expect both under-display Face ID and an under-display front camera until the iPhone 19 Pro models in three years from now."

This is literally Stockholm syndrome

Face ID requires two steps: looking at the phone and swiping up. This process can be less reliable in certain conditions, such as when the phone is on a table or laying on the bed.

Ultrasonic Touch ID offers a more seamless experience, simply requiring a thumb placement. As an in-display sensor, it eliminates the need for a large notch, providing a cleaner and more immersive screen."

Based on the ease of use and versatility, Ultrasonic Touch ID appears to be the winner for me.

Update: Young has since said under-display Face ID is no longer expected for the iPhone 17 Pro. His previous response was sent in error.

Original story follows.

While the iPhone 16 series just began arriving to customers today, there are already rumors about the next-generation iPhone 17 series.

Beyond-iPhone-13-Better-Blue-Face-ID-Single-Camera-Hole.jpg

In a post shared on social media platform X on Thursday, display industry analyst Ross Young said he believes that next year's iPhone 17 Pro will feature under-display Face ID. This change would presumably extend to the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Under-display Face ID has been rumored for several years, but it has failed to materialize. However, Young has a good track record with display-related information about future Apple products, including being the first source to reveal that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max would feature larger 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, respectively. If he says the iPhone 17 Pro will have under-screen Face ID, there is a good chance it will.

In April 2023, Young shared a roadmap that showed both iPhone 17 Pro models would feature under-display Face ID, but he said the devices would still have a hole in the screen for the front camera. He does not expect both under-display Face ID and an under-display front camera until the iPhone 19 Pro models in three years from now.

With under-display Face ID, the iPhone 17 Pro models could have only a single hole at the top of the display, similar to recent Android smartphones from Samsung and Google. However, no specific design changes have been rumored yet.

Another unanswered question: Will the Dynamic Island live on with under-display Face ID?

With the iPhone 17 series still a year away, there is plenty of time remaining for additional rumors, which should give us a better idea of what to expect.

Forget about Face ID and implement the glorious Touch ID under the screen.

I know people say this and I don't discount it, but I've never really had these issues. I can have my head on a pillow (I do not have a super soft pillow) and it still recognizes me.
