Stop the world, I want to get off

Really another year of this damn design
To be honest, that design, even tho it’s been great, it’s starting to feel dated. What was the first iPhone to have it? iPhone 12 Pro? Actually, the 11 Pro already had it, but due to how little it protruded, it feels different.

Let’s say 12 then. That’s 5 entire generations using the same design, 6 if we count the 11Pro. That would make the 17Pro the seventh generation with the same camera design. Meanwhile the regular iPhone has gone from vertical to diagonal, to vertical design again, each time with bigger and better sensors…

I was starting to like the idea of the horizontal row of cameras that was rumored, but maybe they prefer to debut that design with the iPhone Air, to boost the sales of that new device and make people buy it for its innovative (at least by Apple’s standards) design if it comes with less powerful specs.

I don’t really care about how those cameras are Aligned. Apple should add a 4th one, a 10x or more zoom, then we’re talking about something

Contrary to recent reports, the iPhone 17 Pro will not feature a horizontal camera layout, according to the leaker known as "Instant Digital."

iPhone-17-Pro-Dual-Tone-Feature-1.jpg

In a new post on Weibo, the leaker said that a source has confirmed that while the appearance of the back of the iPhone 17 Pro has indeed changed, the layout of the three cameras is "still triangular," rather than the "horizontal bar spread on the internet now." The news contradicts other recent supply chain information coming out of China, which claimed "the module is of this elongated oval shape."

The iPhone 11 Pro's "triangular" camera layout was a marked shift from previous models, which featured a more traditional vertical camera layout. Apple's decision to switch to a new design was mainly driven by the need to accommodate a third camera in the form of a new Ultra Wide camera, along with improved sensors and optics. The introduction of the new camera bump set a new aesthetic standard for subsequent models, influencing the design of later releases right up to today's iPhone 16.

Regardless, it looks like the design of the iPhone 17 Pro is set to change considerably. Late last month, The Information's Wayne Ma claimed that the rear of the ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro Max will feature a "rectangular camera bump made of aluminum rather than traditional 3D glass," while the bottom half will continue to be made of glass to support wireless charging.

Instant Digital has a mixed track record for Apple rumors, but has provided some strikingly accurate information, such as the imminent launch of 2023's Yellow iPhone 14, the frosted back glass of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, the Apple Watch Series 9 as a minor refresh, spatial video capture on the iPhone 15 Pro, the latest iPad Air and iPad Pro's landscape front-facing camera, the M4 iPad Pro's nano-texture display option, the iPhone 16 Pro's battery capacities, and continued Apple Watch band compatibility through the Apple Watch Series 10. As a result, their reports are worth taking seriously.

There are only so many ways you can arrange three geometric circles within a square.

🥳🤣🤣Wow, there's only so much you can do to a phone, why do these things keep making headlines? Do people really care? If you find this thrilling you might need help.

I’ve always been convinced that the iPhone 11’s bump cameras were designed to be intentionally striking and crazy to compensate for the centered Apple logo that was introduced at the same time. in most cases its covered by your hand, so the cameras give it extra visual identity beyond that.
Agreed. The camera design also ensures that people know you have a top-of-the-line iPhone even when the logo is hidden by a case. It's a status symbol.

Good call.
Given how this triangular arrangement has become a symbol of the Pro iPhone, I wouldn't change it.
At least for the time being.
Well, the iPhone hasn’t changed since the 11pro. Give it a more symmetrical design and it would so much better looking? Also more practical when typing on a desk. The wobble always irritates me.

some people have 16/16 plus envy because at least the camera bulge is different for a change. Even if it's a throwback to the X/XS in a lot of ways.

It’s likely safe to assume that the 15 pro, 16 pro and 17 pro iPhones form part of a 3-year cycle (similar to the iPhone 12, 13 and 14 pro models), and there didn’t be any major changes to the design and form factor of the 17 pro.
What three year cycle are you talking about? The iPhone pro hasn’t changed much since the 11pro. It’s past time for a modern refresh.

Interesting that most people are just assuming this is correct and not the other info we have. I know Apple in the past has purposely mislead leakers and supply chains so at this point who actually knows?

Honestly, I prefer triangular camera layout over horizontal bar.

BTW thanks to that, my iPhone 11 Pro still looks fresh 😆

Those were the days. Nowadays we get rumors which holds true for future products released next year. Anyway… it’s not hard these days that nothing will change year after year 🤭

Naw I think they still do a bit of it. My money is still on them doing a new design.

This design reminds me of the iPhone 5. If true it’s proof that Apple has run out of ideas. What’s old is new again 🤐

How is it your concern of how I choose to spend my money or for what reason I choose to update? Asking for a friend.;)
Tell Timmy that he doesn’t have to be such a bean counter and let him put some more money into R&D.

If he doesn’t want to lose the Chinese market (where the innovation is taking place these days) he has to up the ante quite a bit to stay relevant.

Apple is already down to the fifth place over there and badly needs something good to compete. China is after the USA apples biggest market. Losing Europe by withholding AI and a slump in China doesn’t bode well for the future.

Spatial video simply needs the two lenses used to capture it to be about average eye width apart. Apple could position the 2 lenses in ANY way to achieve this, including the prior rumored "row" approach. In fact, that option MIGHT have been better than this one for spatial because the triangle does NOT space any 2 lenses about average eye width apart. In short, there is room to improve spatial capture with a physical layout evolution. Whether that's a wider triangle config or across or vertical row is up to Apple but the same tight placement from well before spatial was a thing likely hinders captures as good as they could be with a phone.

A second advantage to the rumored row approach was no more wobble. Sticking with the triangle persists the wobble.

The third benefit of a tangible physical change is for those who really enjoy showing others they have the latest. Maintaining the same design for yet another year doesn't accomplish that at-a-glance. Those who sweat this issue have to work a bit harder to show their phone is newer than the other guy who clings to one from 3 or 4 generations ago. But there's always new colors. ;)
For Spatial Video, the phone is held in landscape, meaning when it is held in portrait, two of the lenses (at least) need to be stacked vertically on top of each other (so that in landscape they work as “eyes” next to each other.) That’s why it wouldn’t work to have them straight across the top of the phone.

A bit of a refinement of my earlier post

It ticks all the boxes of the rumours:
  • full width camera bar ✅
  • new glass and aluminium rear design ✅
  • maintains triangular camera layout ✅
You also maintain a distinctive iPhone look whilst offering something new in a cleaner (imo) design

I could live with this. Still recognizably iPhone, but solves the wobble problem.

I wonder was Apple able to keep the triangular rear camera sensor design for the iPhone 17 Pro models because they were able to squeeze in the periscope telephoto camera sensor (something rumored Apple will start using in 2025) without needing significant changes to the other internals in the phone design.

Again, I’m not sure Mr. Cook is aligned with your expertise. Please contact him with relevant suggestions.

Why do I have the feeling apple is ahead of the curve with this, and it’s not as simplified as MR posters make it seem.
